With due respect to Ron Rivera... while he has had success, coaching styles are different all together. Not just that but the environments they are in as well. In addition, keep in mind that Ron Rivera's success in Carolina is ultimately what ended up being his undertaker in the end; then Panthers Offensive Play Caller in Mike Shula bludgeoning Cam Newton to oblivion, how well Rivera's Defenses were with Sean McDermott versus how they were after his leave in 2017 to become the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills to his dismal 12-26 record after David Tepper purchased the Panthers in 2018.

Regarding his work in Washington, too early to tell despite how shocking that sounds. Yes, he definitely made the most of that stout defense but that defense was essentially one player away from putting it over the top. Chase Young was viewed as a generational talent. The pick in 2020 was obvious. Not trading up to acquire someone like Justin Fields or even Mac Jones will be interesting to follow for certain. Again though, all Rivera is likely doing is playing the long game but again, too much speculation here.

Overall though, the biggest shortcoming of Rivera is that, knowing his previous handling of a Franchise QB that it takes time for said QB to blossom; some sooner than others, as it was with Newton although Newton was swinging right out of the gate. Regarding Haskins, it was clear that he was a year away from starting.... yet was thrown to the wolves with essentially nothing as a whole... minus "Scary Terry" and Logan Thomas of course. Again, in 2020, much of the same.

Now, Haskins is not without fault here; he should have been more prepared heading into the second year with Rivera. That said, clearly he was not and it cost him dearly, months without employment being the least of his issues. That is part of the risk (high for Haskins anyway) associated here.

So far so good. That said, much to dive into before any conclusions can be made. We will find out just how far Haskins has come under a new system Thursday and see where it goes from there.

Cam was essentially bludgeoned into oblivion via Mike Shula. Mike had plenty of other methods to protect Cam and Rivera knew that as well. Rivera disregarded it and now Cam is but a shell of his former self.

He is currently dealing with his estranged wife who will be appearing in court this month. Furthermore, he also is playing for his NFL Future as his contract has no guarantees on it and can be voided. I think that, so far, he is handling it quite well.

I do agree though with you that a bigger litmus test awaits. However, whether or not Haskins gets that opportunity via the tune up game against the Lions, remains to be seen. All depends on how long Tomlin wants Big Ben out there against Detroit .... if at all with the assumption that Haskins has supplanted Rudolph by this point.

I hope he can put it together. I don't think he's a bad kid, just immature and a little impulsive. It's not enough for him to prove he can perform on the field, he has to get a handle on his personal life, too.

12 TDs with 14 INTs does not make you much of a franchise QB.

Fair points, Haskins was clearly not ready to start in Washington but his release was not wholly to do with on-field play. His maturity and work ethic were also in question by all accounts. Perhaps he has learned his lesson in that regard, I’m all for giving guys a chance and he does seem to be trying hard to make the most of the opportunity.

I think the answer in relation to Dwayne Haskins will only be revealed if and when he gets on the field in the regular season and has to face a pro level defence that has been preparing for him all week. He has all the physical talent in the world but does he have it between the ears to read defences and adjust on the fly? We won’t know that from a preseason series where opponents are mostly in base formation using simple coverages. He has an awful long way to go.

I hope the team support him and give him everything he needs to succeed but ultimately it may come down to instincts and whether Dwayne has them or not.

If Faker Mayfield can be coached up, I don’t see why Haskins cannot

So Haskins 12Tds and 14ints does not make him much of a franchise QB?

Based on the #s. In their first 2 years Which one of these QBS do you want to lead your franchise

    12 TD. 14 INT

    15 TD. 10 INT

    20 TD. 36 INT

    19 TD 48 INT

    28 TD. 31 INT

    11 TD. 21 INT

    Who you taking?

    12 TD. 14 INT. D. HASKINS

    15 TD. 10 INT. M. RUDOLPH

20 TD. 36 INT TROY AIKMAN

19 TD 48 INT TERRY BRADSHAW

28 TD. 31 INT DREW BREES

11 TD. 21 INT STEVE YOUNG

4 yellow jackets and 11 rings.. that all started a little slow

Yeah, I agree. I’m sure every player is told certain things when they first join the team. The question is whether they have the mental/emotional awareness to know that they’re getting “the speech.” “Hey kid, it’s all up to you how far you go in this league. If you do everything right and develop, the sky is the limit.” I’m sure that every QB is told that they “can” be the next franchise QB if they put in the work. I doubt that he was told that he’s got a future role for the taking while other guys were told “play your cards right and you could be camp fodder next year too.”

If your 45 you were born in the late 70's and have no knowledge of the 70 Steelers except from old videos. I lived through those awesome times but I'll take being 45 and have missed those times any day. Of course the Ben era Steelers, aside from some gut rotting times, were awesome times.

Sidebar: The awesome times you speak of may have nothing to do with the Steelers.

Good post, was going to do that legwork myself. Bradshaw is a good comp, he was very immature in his early years.

My biggest concern with Haskins is that he doesn't throw on the move very well, which limits him basically to being a pocket passer, and his poise in the pocket is not great. Maybe that can improve, otherwise his ceiling will be a guy who can only look good when everything else is working around him, ala Carson Palmer.

Haskins was a lottery ticket, no more no less. If he gains some mental maturity he could work out. If not, it is not a great loss in money and no loss in draft capital. He certainly has the physical gifts (but then so did Cliff Stoudt). I hope he understands what an opportunity this is, to be on a team with a qb in his dotage and the most stable organization in football. Haskins is only 24 and in a dream world he would be the Steelers’ qb for the next decade, and put up HOF numbers.

In reality, Steelers’ quarterback of the future may be someone none of us has even heard of yet.

I agree with you on everything but the credit given to Colbert. If Haskins reaches his potential here, it's not going to be because of Colbert. It's going to be because our coaches channeled their inner shrinks and got his head on right. Colbert doesn't get credit for that. If we do nothing for him and he ends up being no more than what he was in Washington, then Colbert shouldn't be faulted for that. Colbert rolled the dice. He gets no credit for getting lucky.

Another angle to this, even though his comments raise eyebrows, is what he actually heard from the "coaches." I'm going out on a limb here, but when you bring in a young guy who's got some "head" issues, you probably tell him what he needs to hear. I mean, pretty sure they weren't telling him that he's here to run the scout team.

Cam was never that good. A team that had a top 10 D most of the time he was there , a Top running game,, and he has 3 freaking winning seasons. Also more then a few Wrs that left talked about his passing.
Don't show me any stats. I don't care.
Wins are what counts 2 me.

Drew was the one that really stood out, because without going 2 the Saints, and S. Peyton , he probably would be out of the league. A perfect storm for his weak arm.
Playing indoors for 80% of his games, and a Great Play designer, and Caller.
