It is true that one should wait till season's end to evaluate this draft but, there is a preliminary grade.
I actually think they scored better on days 2 and 3.
Still, I cannot dismiss the fact that we have a front end issue. I know, it's a repeat but the sad reality is, we could not add Safety of quality when they were available.
I figure if "adequate" is good enough for a person, then so be it.

This one smacked of McCarthy not having a ton of involvement in it and I can understand it as he acclimates to this franchise.
During his time in Green Bay, they had a penchant for sticking to the draft plan also, though they had much better a GM.
I feel like next year improves, even if no changes are made. Just a hunch.

The draft itself was not horrible.
ESPN gave us a 'B' I think, I feel that is generous.
We picked 10 players from 12 picks which is about right. I know I figured 8, maybe 9 as they should move up somewhere to get at least a safety or WR of high quality.
    We didn't.
There's no one that sparks a thought of 'Man, I can't wait to see this guy on the field."

The 2003 draft is probably a B. All the players contribute but only Joey Porter stands out as a potential franchise piece as long as he continues an upward trajectory.
Jones is off/on. I've compared him to Trent Williams who really didn't come on till year 4.
He even spent some suspended time after smoking weed out back with Jordan Reed. I still have faith in Jones to turn it around but that is tempered with caution as the neck injury might linger.
I like Herbig. I did figure Herbig or Highsmith would get traded.

The big question is: Did we get better?
We got a WR that looks to compliment the two stars. We also added another WR gadget guy who's intriguing.
I think the OT has good promise.
So, depth looks to have improved.
I don't get the RB/CB picks, no one really did. CB could be some depth possibly, but I think better quality was there.

My preliminary grade is B- or C and note that if WR and OT pan out then it's a solid B
Allar is a wild card. If he actually pans out to be a solid #2, it might change things and if he actually turns out to be a quality starter that really changes things.
I can't take a guess, but my expectation is that he won't see the field if Aaron returns.

To everyone crying about people expressing an opinion, stfu. No-one is forcing you to give a grade, but no-one needs to hear you repeat the dull as dishwater old mantra's like "...no-one knows what these picks will turn out like so why grade" "I'll grade 3-4 years down the line" - it doesn't make you smart it just makes you an anathema to discourse. These takes are so boring and old. Everyone can see that you're just trying to gatekeep opinion...

The question posed is obviously is looking for a "here and now" take, so either learn to read and ignore the thread, or stfu please.

Hard to go much above C- given they 1st round debacle, and the subsequent knock on effect which left the Steelers reeling and reaching over and over again. Ignored LB, and DT and S until too late, anyine would think we hadn't seen the Steelers getting gashed up the middle year after. Better prospects were available all the way down the draft after Germie Bernard was selected. Too many reaches.

Bernard, Max and Dunker will have to be above average players for this draft to be considered anything like a success.

I don't know how they turned 12 picks into this but they did, a poor return IMO, and the GM is now a confirmed asshat, much as I suspected.

    C-

no NT? yaya black and rubio can both play NT. black is 336lbs. rubio 321.

2 journeymen safeties? ramsey, elliott, castro, brisker, spears-jennings, savage, henderson.

below average LB's? maybe under MT but you have no idea what the new DC may do with this group. queen, wilson, bruener, holcomb, harrison.

it is only april. there may be some other moves made but it's not as dire as you make it out to be. maybe under the old staff, but this will most likely be quite different. you are making assumptions before you have all the facts. chillax. :smiley1::cool:

Agreed I would give it a D very underwhelming and certainly doesn’t make sense with a 43 year old QB and team in win now mode. Just another example of ownership saying one thing and doing another.

You couldn't be further from the truth by saying the Steelers are in win now mode. This draft more than any other should have told you that in capital letters.

The thing I suggested in another post is the part most fans and 'analysts' skip over. Teams draft with a multi-year view, not just this season. What will the roster look like in three years? You have to factor in player age, FA, contracts, etc. Where will the gaps be? Then you work backwards to look for the talent in those areas. Steelers had an aging defense and a pieced together offense.

Since Kahn's start, the Steelers have split exactly 50/50 offense vs defensive picks. And they have recognized their biggest weakness (OL) and have attacked it with almost half their picks. Get the OL right before committing big draft capital to the most important position. They took a stab at QB, but it didn't work out. It was probably a longshot anyway given the class weakness. For how not to do it, look no further than the Bengals with one of the top QBs in the NFL.

Im not saying they should be in win now mode that what the OWNER says. Sitting around pathetically waiting for a washed up QB to decide on them is win now mentality I don’t think AR is part of a rebuild plan. I agree this draft is a rebuilding draft if that’s what our plan was. However like most things with this franchise recently they say one thing and act out another.

There is no rebuld plan, a rebuild would have been clearing out vets and trading people like TJ Watt away 2 years ago before he fell off a cliff. Now Flanders Rooney (an absolute football moron, still waiting on a 43 year old piss taker) has told us all "we 'aint doing no stinkin' rebuild" we turn 12 picks into a developmental/reach draft...this is why the Steelers never get anywhere, no plan whatsoever, neither here, nor there...no plan at all. MM era looks like a re-run of the chaos he brought to Dallas.

You couldn't make this **** up.

Sure looks that way. But hey let’s wait until the season is over and then give our record predictions. Some of these guys would clean up in Vegas just wait for the game to be over and load up baby!

It would probably make sense for them to play Benton on passing downs, and then play Joseph-Day on running downs if possible.

They say if you get three starters out of a draft then it's a good draft, projecting Dunker, Max and Bernard as future starters.
