I've read multiple comments over the last month like " and when Golson returns" and after some thought I've concluded he won't play defense this year.

Now that I'm settled on that conclusion I can move forward on who will be playing his year.... Maybe even Gilbert!

I am certain Golson will play... just not the level of snaps we wanted him to.

I have a hard time believing that a player with hardly even any NFL practice snaps, let along preseason snaps, let along NFL level snaps.... Is going to join a playoff/contender and take snaps from an effective secondary

And this is coming from someone who LOVED the Golson pick, and think he has top notch coverage skills.

If he plays, it's because someone got hurt. No other reason for him to see snaps under any other circumstance

Look we have Gay, Cockrell,Burns,Gilbert, and swingman Davis...to hold it down until he's ready, if ever, this season.

Blast Furnace brought up what I think is a good point. Possibly they kept Golson on the roster so when he can play at least he can start getting some real reps. Not as a starter, nor will he save the day, but if he gets some playing time, he will be farther ahead when next season starts. Then maybe he can compete for a starting position.

I wouldn't play Golson this year... he has no experience in live games for the Steelers.

You know how coaches roll, they need to completely trust the guys that are out there. I don't think he is gonna be able to gain that trust in limited practice... If he does it won't be until the last quarter of the season.

At the end of the season I'll be able to count on my fingers his total snaps for the year.

I don't see it either. But, and this is a big what if. If he's healthy later on down the road would you put him in for mop up duty? I don't see the harm in that. At that point the other team would most likely be bombs away, so he could be used as a corner in the nickle or dime. Let him gain some confidence against a number 3 or 4 receiver.

I doubt he plays very much. Burns is going to be developing as the year goes and demanding more playing time. Davis the same way. Cockrell is improving every week. Mitchell and Gay are pretty much set. Golden is proving exactly why he is starting. That is 6 guys. Gilbert can't even get on the field, why would Golson. Now, I do think they both need to get a few snaps, it only benefits us in the long run.

They're not keeping him on the active roster for nothing.
He'll get some snaps on defense if he gets healthy. How many, who knows?

If he wasn't coming back, they'd end his season. He's on the active roster. They wouldn't do that if they weren't 100 percent sure he'd be back at some point this season. We wouldn't keep him on the roster otherwise

We are an injury at either CB or S away from possibly needing him. Or moving Gay to slot and Burns and Gilbert into the 2nd CB and dime respectively. We need the depth.

You guys seem confused as to the role of the 5th Cb...

Golson is on the roster because they want to carry a 5th CB as they usually do.

As a 5th CB he's not going to play unless there's serious injuries.

They aren't going to use important games to get him ready for next year.

They haven't kept him on the roster to start him, they've kept him on the roster for talented emergency depth.

The spot normally doesn't dress, so they can keep Golson on the roster same as a healthy scratch CB

That seems about right, but the OP has started a thread dedicated to the fact that he won't play on defense this year. Unless he has a crystal ball or some kind of inside knowledge of the team he has no idea whether or not he gets any playing time.

Who know's really? To basically start a thread guaranteeing he wont play is pretty foolish though.
