There are waaaaay more flops over all, not just NE. And I really don't know how instrumental DR was to them winning a SB anyway, I'd argue that undrafted Butler made a bigger impact then the big FA acquisition of DR.

Steelers way works, has always worked and always will work. For Steelers fans, lean years means a couple 8-8 seasons, God I love being a Steelers fan.

strange they just resctured him , if traded his first year will be only 1,3 milion base salary ..again very strange

Not that it will happen because of the Domestic Violence charges (dismissed for lack of evidence), but the Saints have Junior Galette on the trading block. 10 Sacks last year as an OLB and the team that gets him is only on the hook for the salaries remaining on his contract (2015 - $1.25M, 2016 - $5M, 2017 - $5.2M, 2018 - $6.4M and 2019 - $7.3M). That's significant because if he gets in to ANY trouble, you can release him with no dead money as the dead money remains with the Saints. 31.5 sacks in his first 5 years in the league.

The Steelers will never field the perfect team. They will never fill all of their holes.

It seems to me that they've done pretty well as an organization from the 70's until now.

The first goal of this organization is to remain competitive. It's not ONLY about winning championships. The organization understands that there isn't a team that is going to win the SB every year. There are simply to many variables involved for any team to win a championship every year.

The organization does it's best to put a good team on the field within reason. Over paying FA's doesn't seem to work out a vast majority of the time. Teams eventually cut those players after they realize they won't get a great return on their investment.

oh horsepucky! If they new what they were doing, we'd have only lost 2 Super Bowls out of winning the last some odd 30 bowls since our first one and it would've been due to Vegas or injury or just plain bad luck... Hahahahaha

I hear ya bro... Can't please us every year

Not everything went well for the steelers from the 70s till now. The 80s were a mess with only three winning seasons. The point I was trying to make with the whole post is that Ben is on the back side of his career. Do you take 4 years to develop your D or do you pick up FA's that can help you now. Ben has 5 good years in him...maybe more. But franchise QB's are hard to fine. Between Bradshaw and Ben the steelers started 7 QB's. So the question is do you build through the draft and wait till Ben is at the end of his career or now when he is still in his prime.

Theyll never be able to finance wholly what's needed to salvage what tread be. Has left. A piece here, a piece there, hopefully they work and hope you got some gems in the draft. You see teams year after year in every sport try to break the bank for a trophy... And reap zilch. The only one time I could even justify a team going nuts cause it had the QB to win was last year with the Broncs. Back then I waS pissed thinking the same thing. Ben only has so many BLAH blah blah left and then we all saw how that went.

Bottom line is Pitt has never been overly aggressive in F.A. And they usually don't overspend for outsiders or homeboys... USUALLY, sometimes they do and that is why are cap has sucked the last couple of years.

Whatever er they do seems to be cyclical as in we seem to come back era after era or decade to decade in some sense. So I hope time and trend hasn't completely skipped us and we can stay the course.

Would you rather have Ben, Brown, Pouncey, Timmons, and soon to be Heyward or a bunch of free agents. The Steelers spend their money wisely on their own players. It works are there lulls sure are oh well I will take a few down years to stay good for 10+ years. Patience people patience. If its not broke don't fix it. This team won the north and had a home playoff game. Yes they lost 40% of there offense before the game and lost but you can see the process working. Remember when Troy, Timmons, and Heyward were all busts? This team knows talentaybe not so much in the defensive backfield but you can see the plan coming together.

They had six winning seasons in the 80s...80, 82, 83, 84, 87, and 89. The foundation of Cowher's SB XXX team was built through Noll drafts.

Regardless, there isn't a shred of evidence that big splash FA moves help teams win. There are exceptions to that, of course, as with Deion with San Fran and Dallas, but if it were the general rule, Daniel Snyder would have three or four trophies in his case by now.

Thanks for saving me the time, add 4 playoff appearances too. More proof that most fans would die for the Steelers "lean" years. The 80's were disappointing because they had no franchise QB after TB, the teams themselves weren't horrible.

They are the most successful team the last 14 years. If you want to call that flopping, then I wish we would flop more. 6 Super Bowls, 4 SB wins since 2001. Of course they don't win it all every year, but they win more titles than anyone else the last decade and a half. They are twice as successful as we are. I guess the "Pats' way" works, and they aren't afraid to sign free agents.

No franchise QB....as a matter of fact, not just lacking franchise QB but far below average QBs. Malone, Stoudt, Brister....eeee gads, those are bad QBs. But they not only lacked QBs, they lacked play makers on offense, big time. Our best RBs were Walter Abercrombie and Frankie Pollard. Our best WRs were Lipps (who was our only good offensive player of the era), Dwight Stone and Weegie Thompson. Pgh somehow failed to field almost any play makers for a decade. That's not easy to do. But the D was pretty solid throughout.

I think it's also noteworthy that New England won their 1st 3 Super Bowls with almost no free agents of consequence. Really the only big name signing was Rodney Harrison. Vrabel was great, but he was the equivalent of our Moats signing. Same deal for David Patten.

In 3 play off games, including the SB, DR gave up a total of 22 yards or something like that. Saying he wasn't a part of them winning the title seems inaccurate to me. When you only give up a total of 22 yards in 3 pay off games, and basically shutting down your side of the field, that is significant. At the very least, it proves teams are afraid to throw to his side of the field, and that is invaluable, whether you think it is or not.

Moats is a career back up level OLB. He isn't horrible but he will never be a probowler. Vrabel was an absolute beast. He had 12.5 sacks in 2007 and another 9.5 sacks in 2003. Moats will NEVER put up sacks like that, ever.

Pats have also signed notables such as Randy Moss and Cory Dillon. They are not afraid to sign some fairly big names, and have been to 6 SBs and won 4 since 2001. Now, do they ever go hog wild and sign a myriad of free agents? No, nor should we. Could we improve our changes of winning if we signed SOME decent, targeted free agents? You bet yea. When teams are bombing us deep because we get no pressure on the QB because we are weak at OLB and our CBs are getting torched, then we will all agree more should have been done.

Well I didn't say that did i, I said I'd argue that Butler had a bigger impact, considering he saved the SB for them. He was basically inserted about half way in the game and shut down his man and then made the play that saved the SB. You don't have to throw gobs of money at a FA player to win. There is far more proof that points against it then your one example of NE, who win consistently because of BB/TB combination more than anything else...

    ...and cheating

The Pats are the exception to the rule. This doesn't mean they have been without their fair share of FA busts. Fred Taylor and Ocho-Cinco are a couple of examples.

I think you'e right from the standpoint that the Steelers could add pieces. But in this market, who would those pieces be? I see no OLB or CB worth breaking the bank for.

Ok, you missed the point. When they signed vrabel, he was the equivalent of our Moats signing - i.e. Another team's castoff. Im not saying that Moats is going to be Vrabel. They didn't win their first 3 Super Bowls by making a splash early in free agency. They waited and grabbed guys who were not in demand like Vrabel, Patton, Antowan Smith, and yes, Dillon (who was a Bengals cast off). Oh by the way, Moss was not a free agent signing, he was dumped by the Raiders for a 4th rounder. So in other words... They treated free agency much as we do back when they won their first 3 Super Bowls.

Throwing money at free agents is a relatively recent phenomenon for them.

And by the way, I'm not thrilled with the state of our pass rush or coverage either. However, I dont think there was anything we could do in free agency last week that would have helped without grossly overpaying. The winners in the first week of free agency are almost always losers on the field.

The above is a straw man argument. When did I EVER say you should throw "gobs" of $ at free agents? There is something between "gobs of $" and selectively signing some players who can help. It's not an "on and off" switch. You can use a dimmer switch.
