Anyone have any idea what this guy is doing these days? I know he's playing for SD, but does he start? Does he play much? Is he any good?

I heard so much praise for this guy, talking about how he blocked very well, pass protected well, was impossible to tackle, and was a very good receiver out of the backfield. I know he got hurt, but I assumed we released him because he just didn't fit into BA's offence.

No clue why we drafted him for a scheme that he wouldn't have ever been used in, but that's a different topic.

Anyone watched him at all in SD?

Oh, I thought he still played for them.

Guess he wasn't very good after all and it wasn't just our system

The BA system wasn't helpful, but I had the feeling he was released by use because he was generally unimpressive at the pro level, despite all his promise.

Frank Summers isn't in the NFL..
Mike Tomlin doesn't make the draft selections, that would be Kevin Colbert.

At the round he was taken, I don't think expectations were for a superstar. People around the forums were pleased with the pick - big runner, could catch and block etc. - but when it came to NFL caliber play he just didn't show anything. So I wouldn't hang this on the "bad drafting" argument too quickly.

In Franks defense he was not given opportunities here. He played very well and with hustle on ST....I was at camp...and Frank was breaking off 3-5 yard runs...whole or no whole...he would push the pile.....he would pick up the blitz in pass pro.....he would catch passes out of the backfield.....then in the games they would put him at FB ....let him block to or 3 times...and then we would never see him again.

Tank was great out the gate but had no stamina. He just didn't deliver!! in preseason for Burg nor as part of a 53 man roster in San Diego... the kid had much potential just never hit his mark in NFL.

I'm not really sure how that relates to what I said, or what you said before it... but there you go.

Hack - I see your point about being stuck at FB in a position where there was no chance to shine. The lack of proper FB practice that's come to light probably hurt as well. And not quite sure why we kept Carey Davis instead. But I guess he's one of those "could have, should have, but didn't" players. Still, as a late-round, low-risk prospect, thems the breaks.

They cut Davis for Summers....but Summers got a back injury and they put him on IR.

Summers beat out Davis and Redman year 1

Hack's right. He was a good player, but he was a running back coming out of college and they wanted him to play fullback. Okay, that's all well and good... but they didn't get him any reps at fullback in the preseason (kind of important if you're planning on starting him there week 1!), and he barely got any reps at all, even at RB. He was athletic and big and strong and just needed to work on his technique, but never got the chance. Either he got injured or they faked/exaggerated an injury for him and off he went. For all I know he might have never become a good blocker (DJ tried for 3 years and never got it) but it's definitely possible. He had the tools. He had better eyes than DJ, and could catch and run better, and even (gasp) take hand-offs. He just needed practice because he liked to lunge at defenders instead of staying on his feet. He could have grown out of that. Here we are saying he was a bust, but he only got like 1 game's worth of reps to prove himself (and no practice games). That's like a drop in the bucket compared to DJ's three years.

Tell "it worked out" to Super Bowl 45. With an even mediocre fullback, Mendenhall doesn't fumble and we have a good chance at winning that game.

several things on that play were amiss. i would have loved to had will johnson leading him though. i wish we would use will j. the way he should be used and stop trying to make him another TE too. the line blocking has something to do with that though. hopefully paulson can come through and become a good blocker and will j. can go back to inline lead blocking.

...Will Johnson is looking REALLY good, I'm really excited about the potential of Will.

Yeah, there were other factors. Legursky didn't do a great job, Matthews made a great play, Mendenhall could have had both hands on the ball... but the main reason is Johnson's whiff. Mendy thought Matthews would be blocked, and DJ ran right by him. With any NFL caliber fullback, or even a punter with a little courage, Matthews doesn't go untouched, and while it might be a loss of 2 on the play, there's no way it's a fumble. It's 2nd and 12 and the promising drive continues. Not having DJ as our fullback would have given us a chance to win the game. Having him there cost us that chance.
