Surprisingly Foote appears to be having a good camp. Go figure

Inside linebacker Larry Foote was the star of the goal-line drill, blowing up several plays in the backfield as the defense won, 6-1.

Foote was involved in all three plays for the first-team defense.

"I thought it was just a great goal-line period by guys like Larry Foote as opposed to deficient work on the other side," Tomlin said. "You've got to acknowledge when guys are playing lights out and, from where I stood, it looked like Larry Foote controlled the whole drill."

Usually, the Steelers would clear the sideline of all fans about 20 to 30 minutes before the end of practice. But Tomlin let the crowd stay till the end so they could witness the goal-line drill and create more excitement.

I never realized the hatred of Larry Foote, he won't ever be a pro bowl player, but the guy is really servicable, great back up, good special teamer. But people get down on him a lot, he's getting a little older but I have no doubts that he can come in do the ILB job, at least until Spence learns this defense really well. Glad to see that Larry is having a great camp.

Well I'm glad to see him doing good too but, as was stated he is only serviceable and not a starter, he is a stop gap to me. The big thing is that he was competing against his own teammates and not another team. We will see what he does in the upcoming pre-season games against other teams number 1's. I'm not impressed with him just yet. I remember him and Farrior getting beat many times last year, plus he is considered old at 32 and 11 years in the league. I don't see him making it through the whold season. I really hope that Spence can unseat him and be the starter. I also have little hope that Sly will unseat him which is ashame because Sly has been in the system for three years. Timmons started in his third year and played alot in his second year. I'm looking for the young talent to be ready sooner rather then later. Out with the old in with the youth. Time is up for Hampton, (McClendon), Starks, (Adams), and Foote, (Spence)! If we can move on without those three, we will be pretty young, strong, and fast.

i hear ya E, but remember sly didn't get last years offseason to come in here and learn and workout because of the lockout. he missed alot. he wasen't a first round draft choice either and timmons got alot of work because he was going to take larrys job at the time. this year they were also having him learn the OLB spot because of injuries. this could also slow down his growth some in the middle.

sly has shown improvement to me. special teams improvement last year without ota's and mini camp. this year he was getting through the line into the backfield and alot of those close calls can easily be turned into big plays at some point. we don't even know how he will look with woodley and harrison rushing with him. he looked good in coverage against the eagles. i didn't think he had that bad of a game.

i'm also pretty pleased with our new pickup johnson. he looked pretty good and he should get better as he learns the system. ivy isn't bad either, so i'm pretty happy so far with our LB'ers. :towel:

First, Foote is what he is. He isn't TYPICALLY going to make splash plays. He will fill the role until someone grabs it from him.

Second, Spence may eventually be that guy. He may just be too good next year to keep off the field.

Third, Sylvester was a guy I was hoping would grab that from Foote, but I will go back to where I have been all along with him. I think he should be on the outside using his athleticism to make plays in the backfield.

Fourth, the LB core at the moment is NOTHING like it should be once we get to the season. Harrison and Worilds have both been out, but they will both be on the roster. The same could be said about the Oline. I won't overreact right now to Gilbert being at LT until I know that Adams can't take it back from him when he is cleared PRIOR to the season start. The key now for Adams, who may have lost his opportunity to start week 1 now, is to stay with the learning. Be an active part of camp and watch the film to see the mistakes of others.
