i know you and some others don't think those two are worthy but i believe we are in better shape with them then in years past. we had a rookie in highsmith last year and ola behind him. thats why they brought in marsh when bud went down. that's why they kept marsh this year and added a good rookie behind him and let ola walk.

Marsh can't play the run, he was a desperation signing. I think he'll be the guy they let go if/when they sign a vet.

I would kick the tires on Okafor. Only on Steeler friendly terms. We need depth at OLB.

I’d add Justin Houston to the list as possibly somebody that could contribute in spots. Gareon Conley and Malik Hooker could be nice pickups, talent is there and they are areas of need.

The depth across the defence is a big worry, a couple of injuries could ruin the season.

They could possibly fit one or two of the above under the cap by borrowing a small amount from next season

Yep, and they'll also need to absorb the contracts of numbers 52 and 53 on the roster once the Rule of 51 lapses closer to the season.

Doesn't mean they can't sign another FA, just that it would require some salary shuffling to balance the cap ledger.

Malik Hooker and Gareon Conley have "Colbert Reclamation Projects" written all over them. Of the two, Malik is the one I would want the most. Yes, he does have an injury history but he is also a ballhawk; Minkah being given more Freedom to move wherever he pleases as a result. That said, signing him for a one year vet minimum is critical as well.

Gareon Conley is a close second. Should he pass his physical, he could make the roster as he does have the tools to succeed. That said, those physicals are critical.

I still think they have to resign Watt to get enough money to go after a quality free agent.

But, do you wait until the final cuts before the start of the season to make your move for a starting LT or CB?

If they sign a vet, it will probably be for the vet minimum.

I would rather they bring in Conley myself. We have 2 starters at OLB, but we have a hole at one of our starting corner positions.

Haden and Sutton are the starters at CB, I don't see a signing that would change that unless it's Steven Nelson :hehehe:.

I would consider the slot/nickel CB a starter, some people don't I guess.

I feel it's James Pierre's job at this point, but they are thin at corner after that. Layne is a liability but they will give him another shot to take up a roster spot. He has a lot to prove to be honest to take up that spot.

I would bring in Conley first to see what he and his agent are looking for, but I feel that vet minimum will not apply here.

I can't see vet minimum as well for Okafor who would be a nice addition to spell Watt and Highsmith and if one gets nicked up he could start.

he is a vet. we don't need another starter to sit the bench that formerly never had to play special teams. that would make the spot weaker.

Pierre seemed to move up the ladder as the season progressed last year so the coaches must feel comfortable with him. If he becomes a capable starter, that would be HUGE. I hope he does well this camp.

I would tend to agree with you on Conley wanting more than vet min but maybe a legit chance to start may entice him for a year?? Then he can cash in for 2022 if he plays well. It'd be worth the Steelers reaching out imo, if they haven't already done so.

I don't get the Pierre love. He got 27 snaps on D last year. For reference, Banner got 59 on O.

Those two guys are complete question marks, IMO.

    It's not love, its hope.

Coaches moved him ahead of Layne IIRC towards the end of the year. We don't have many options there. Pierre, Layne, Shakur Brown, the FA dude they got, maybe Norwood (more S probably) and some others. CB is definitely a weakness that wasn't quite addressed this offseason with a known commodity. Can one of these guys step up...maybe. Pierre just seems to be the frontrunner.

I don’t even consider it a CB. If you aren’t on the corner....

In Keith Tomlin's defense, it's often times a linebacker in that role.

Loved that 3rd JJ video, he held is position and got eyes on the WR, then waited to see which way he ran to set his block

Conley might want more than min.. but he not getting much more this year. He is almost out of the league all together.

Malik Hooker is also one more contract from retirement

I still prefer Richard Sherman on a 2 year deal.....and I like Olivier Vernon at OLB.

I would not want Vernon dropping into coverage much until I see how his Achilles has healed.... but I think you could put him on a limited snap count early on and then by the time the back half of the season gets here he will be a wrecking ball
