I saw a rather interesting comment by Jim Wexell about the play on Redman's first fumble.

"And Felix Jones forgot to run onto the field foe the play in which Redman fumbled"

Obviously that didn't cause the fumble, but it certainly explains the confusion prior to the play. It also is probably a pretty good indicator of why we didn't see him yesterday.

    It didn't matter.

The play was supposed to have Jones at RB with Redman at FB. There was some confusion and Ben and Tomlin both said they considered calling a timout but David Johnson was on the field and lined up at RB instead.

They made the right decision not burning a timeout.

Being that it cost us points and momentum it certainly does matter.

I think a timeout ABSOLUTELY had to be called in that situation. No one on the defence was fooled. David Johnson was not going to get the ball. Everyone knew it was going to Redman. Not that it mattered if he can't hold onto the hand off.

So you're telling me that if Felix Jones had been standing there doing nothing behind Redman, instead of DJ... That they wouldn't have fumbled? Oh alright.

    Hindsight... 20/20...

Not knowing what would happen... If you said burn a timout or just run the play with DJ back there, I say save the timeout.

Yes I agree it ruins the "decoy" aspect somewhat but having DJ at RB creates some other question marks for the defense... Maybe they're passing and DJ is in there as an extra pass protector. Maybe they're running a reverse and DJ's in there to lead block.

How do you know the play wasn't designed to go to Jones? Even if it wasn't at least having the threat of a speedy decoy in Jones would have more of an affect than Johnson lined up at RB. And if you go back and read the original post it states quite clearly this didn't cause the fumble.

Maybe, maybe not. It sounds as if the play was rushed due to the confusion. Still no excuse, but maybe that's why there was a botched handoff

Simply a bas play do to the fact it was rushed.Any Coach can tell you that on a FB trap the Qb has to look for a lower pocket.10 out of 10 times the RB will be getting low on inside quick traps...

Its not a zone read play or a stretch play it seems we hadn't practiced that play much hints the confusion and the exchange that resulted from that.

Forgot to run onto the field...

Maybe this is why the Iggles gave him away for virtually nothing!

Felix saw the way the line was blocking and froze on the sideline

ACcording to Kaboly or Lolley they had been practicing it for quite some time with Redman as the FB and either Jones or LSH as the RB.

I don't think a time out in that situation in the first half would have been considered wasted or " burned."
it would have been the prudent thing to do in that situation. Certainly, I have seen the steelers waste time outs on much less important plays.

I was there. I saw Jones run about 20 feet onto the field and Dj leave the huddle about ten feet towards the sideline. ThenJones got called back, probably because he was late. I even asked my son if he saw that and he even said somebody messed up.

The othe question I have about that play is why was Dj on the field to begin with? And shouldn't a coach be telling the players who's supposed to be on the field?

Because everything I've read today said that it was a designed run to Redman. And like I mentioned to someone else... Yes it takes away the decoy somewhat but DJ being back there could mean other things too...

Regardless, when you're that close to the goal line the defense is ready for a run up the middle. Everyone in the stadium knew when Jerome Bettis was getting it, and it didn't matter. It's not a frickin excuse to fumble. People can sit here and say the confusion caused it, the new center caused it... I call BS... Do your damn job.

Agree 100%...you're 10 minutes into a new season with a new RB and one who had 2 preseason carries. It's the first half and you have a chance to go up 9 - 0. Call a fgn timeout!!!

So, on top of everything else that's bad, confusion on the sideline gets added to the list. This team is in total disarray....

yeah he didnt forget .. he didnt want to be the 4th guy to get a season ending injury... he was the smartest steeler on the field .. he chose not to play... and if he did forget does that not go back to poor coaching.. why wanst a coach (OC, RB COach... tomlin... someone ) yelling at him to get his a$$ in there? poorly coached team..

:this!: It was a bad exchange, should have been lower but Red is a pro, needs to hold onto that, no excuses.
