I see there are a few avid readers here (Ray D, TTF) among others. Just wondering who are your favorite authors?

    Mine in no particular order;

    John Gilstrap
    Michael Connelly
    Dean Koonz
    John Grisham
    Tom Clancy

I also like Steven King but he just goes off on so many tangents.Loved "The Stand" but he could have told the same story in about 300 less pages.I find this true with almost every book of his I have read.

So whats on everybodys night stands?

My reading tastes are pretty eclectic. I used to be an avid reader, but lately it's mostly 'how-to' stuff.

Some authors that I enjoy or have read the most frequently in the past are-

    Clive Cussler
    Vince Flynn
    David Baldacci
    Tom Clancy
    W.E.B Griffin

Ok, that list isn't very eclectic, but I often would find myself reading something from a completely different genre if it piqued my interest. I used to read Stephen King, but haven't in a long time for the exact reason you mentioned. The unnecessary tangents he'd go off on would drive me bonkers. I hear his new one is actually pretty good so I may have to give it a try. I used to read Dean Koontz as well, but for some reason I lost interest in him. The book on my nightstand is actually Blood, Sweat, and Chalk. A sort of history of famous football plays and schemes book that I got for Christmas. Kind of a fun read.

Currently, George RR Martin. But I can't really say I have a "favorite." I'll read just about anything. Whatever grabs my interest when it's time for a new book.

I used to devour Stephen King books. Same with Anne Rice. Not so much now, although I still appreciate what I've read from them.

I'm not a big sci-fi reader, but I loved Frank Herbert's Dune series.

Max Brookes' World War Z was great. I only wish there was more of it (World War Z itself. I know about the Survival Guides)

I enjoy Tom Clancy's novels, but I don't necessarily rush out to buy them. Actually, I'm not sure I've read one in a very long time.

I've been meaning to get around to reading some of Elmore Leonard's stuff.

I tend more often to pick up this book or that. Sometimes a classic, sometimes some no name paperback.

Next in the queue once I've finished my latest re-read of ASOIF is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the other 2 books. I want to read them before I watch the movie.

See, I have to disagree there. I've read both versions of The Stand, and I find the Unabridged version more enriching. Yes, there's some stuff not really conducive to the plot, but it fills out the world a bit.

I don't know. It just gives it more flavor.

where King drives me nuts sometimes is he doesn't handle endings very well. It's a gripe I also have for Coen Brothers movies.

YES! I was just coming to say that very thing. "IT" could very well have been my favorite book ever but the ending was disastrous, wtf was that about??? Even the Stand left me a little unsatisfied, over all a great read though. Tommy Knockers, Salems Lot, same thing, weak ending. I think every book I have read of his, the ending has been weak. My favorite author is Dean Koontz. I also read these other authors:

    David Morrel
    Kyle Mills
    Nelson Demille
    Thomas Perry
    Anne RIce
