With a busy off season coming up,
we will have to try to get back to top
    caliber football.We have primarily done
this thru the draft. I am scared of these
two people and their scouting department
to secure the proper talent needed
to get us back to competing for a
    superbowl. What are your thoughts?

Most teams that lose corner stone players go through transitional periods. It's going to be difficult but I think they can get the team back to being competitive again.

I'd continue working this offense.. developing skills shaping players that have the potential to become competent players if not.. rid along with the accident prone's. Be more selective on drafts/trades.. refresh the D with low mileage young legs with plenty of speed. Personnel needs to take a deeper look into our coaching abilities and make them more accountable on their 2014 objectives. As to Colbert and Tomlin havn't seen much lately to wanna make me shout hallelujah.

Something is obviously broken from our scouting department to our ability to develop the talent we put in the Black and Gold. Do I have confidence in Colbert and Tomlin? Maybe. But I must admit that confidence has been shaken a bit the last couple of years. We're just not getting enough of a return from our first and second round draft picks. I personally think that our coaching is more deficient than our scouting.

This. Confidence is waning. If rumors are to be believed about scouting for our next franchise QB, why waste a 4th rounded on L Jones? Could have used it for someone who at least can be on the field and contribute.

    1. Coaching - inability to design plays with the type of talent they have. Both on offense and defense. Inability to see players strength and weekness.
Cannot promote team discipline. Cannot motivate, lack of enthusiasm and passion.

    Definitely something wrong here.......

    2. Scouting - Timmons over Shawn Lee ? Adams a no. 2 pick ? Gilbert a no. 2 pick ? Limas Sweed a no. 2 pick ? Landry Jones a no. 4 pick that may never play? Ziggy Hood a no. 1 pick ?

    Definitely something wrong here lately.....

Love this team, but i'm afraid we are in trouble and it's going to take a while to fix all the problems..... We got by in the past because we had superior talent, like Hines, A younger Ben, Santonio Holmes, Farrior, Casey Hampton, James Harrison, A younger Troy, A Smith. Most of this talent was picked by who????? Even though Corbett was there then so was the Chin to help the talent evaluation process. The scouting dept has not been the same since Cowher left..

I think you have to look at the scouting department more, Mac broke it down in a post once and it left me less then impressed, sounds more like people got jobs as handouts more then based on merit.

However, I think we just had a very solid draft, Jarvis, Bell, Shamarko and V Williams, I think all will be studs. Put together another draft like that next year, and we are on our way back to the top.

What we can't have anymore of, is drafts like 2008 and 2009, with only Ziggy remaining on the team.

also there to help with talent development - tough to separate scouting from developing talent.

the mother of all of draft mistakes was bruce davis instead of cliff avril , then they still have hole at olb the year later and they picked worilds instead lee , then you have still a hole and we pick jarvis instead of eifer or reid ..

i rember everybody were screaming for avril and came out that bust of davis ,i would be curious to see who was the genius that had that idea ..

This. It's so hard to say whether guys are busts as draft picks or if they haven't been developed properly. Football isn't just about talent, it's about scheme. Tomlin needs to put in a system that allows the players to succeed. Without talent a team can only go so far, but a coach needs to realize the shortcomings of his players and scheme around it. Tomlin doesn't seem to have the ability to do that.

to many role players and not enough play makers. if we are going to keep ben around past his current contract, then we have to cut loose some money from the likes of: Woodley, troy, ike, and I hate to even think it and say it but, maybe heath in a couple of years. I hope it's just the knee and bringing him back a smidge early, but age is also creeping up on him too.

the dead money, including 4.2 mil. still from colon is going to be hard to overcome in a year or two. it depends how they do it. after june 1 and split it in two years, also when bens contract runs out. at the end of 2015 if nothing is done with bens current contract and they break up some of these other dead money hits into two years, we could be sitting on a whole bunch of free cap room, but nearly starting from scratch playerwise. unless they have really hit with this past draft and the next one by then.

They drafted Worilds over Sean Lee not Timmons. They had Worilds rated higher on their board Lee is injury prone anyway.

Can't denounce the Jarvis pick yet, too soon, I think he will end up being the player we all hope he can be. Remember, he was starting, something that very rarely happens with DL's defense, just wasn't ready for it. Still saw enough from him to give me hope though.

I actually saw nothing out of Jarvis that leaves me hopeful. He seems to have no ability to get to the QB. But I don't think that's his fault. I think Jarvis can be a beast, but I just don't think he will be in this defence. For whatever reason, our guys can't get to the QB anymore, and I think it's a product of the system rather than a product of the players themselves.

But we've had several drafts that were considered solid over the last few years, BF. The so-called "experts" always give us high marks. That's why my concern is more with what our coaching staff is doing with the talent that's being delivered to them than with Colbert, the FO and the scouting department. Certainly not giving them a pass but the fact is Tomlin and company can't seem to get the talent to the next level.
