Spartacus, that was not aimed at you. No apology needed.

Just heading off a religious war before it erupts. :D (It's a fun thread, and could promote some decent discussion on top of the jokes. It would be a shame to have to lock it because we can't follow the rules already in place)

So back to the topic at hand...

I would be curious to see how a few things would shake out as a result to someone coming out of the closet in the NFL. (And let's not kid ourselves. Statistically speaking, there has to be at least 1 or 2 dozen currently playing)

If he's a "star" player, how will it affect his endorsement deals? I don't mean that Nike would drop him (but someone might). I mean, would he generate even more interest? And what sort of products would play that angle up?

If he's only a role player, would he suddenly find himself with new endorsement deals that just being "John Doe" on the special teams wouldn't have garnered him alone?

Would this result in protests at his team's games?

How soon before we're all sick of being reminded he's gay every damned play? :lolol:

I don't think there would be too much backlash against him, but you know there would be some. What shape would it take, and from whom?

How soon after the first guy would the rest start following?

I think your average fan would take it in stride, but how "cheeky" might the trash talking get?

i have never seen a straight player come out and tell everyone he has sex with his wife and thats what hes about so id appreciate it if gay players do the same.

That's just a tad convenient don't you think?

I mean, we ASSUME he is straight and ASSUME that means he likes certain activities with women. It doesn't need to be said.

If a player came out and said he's gay, you would only be assuming the rest. ;)

I've seen this point made a lot lately, and I really don't understand how people think it's the same. Players do mention their families in passing all the time. Even if said player didn't "come out" but simply mentioned his boyfriend supporting him (like many players do their wives), in an interview the media will erupt, and make it headline news. That's not the player's fault, it's the media and society's.

I don't really share my religious and spiritual beliefs with every person I see so I don't care to hear about a football player's 20 times per interview, but that's their right.

Totally agree. I really have no idea why the LGBT community makes such a big deal about it. They should just close their mouths and go about their own business.
What I don't need is for them to be pushing an agenda on my children.

Wow, so many things wrong with this statement.

    1) Where in the history of civilization do we find an example of straight people being oppressed for simply being straight? So much so
that someone finally had to stand up for his/her right to be straight and come out to the world in a news conference?

    2) As others have said, this is not a valid comparison. We live in a world where most assume everyone else is straight, some how. We automatically ask a male friend if he has a girlfriend, wife, kids, etc. We very freely share this info about us even when not asked. (How many times have you asked your straight friends to "keep it to yourself" when they've volunteered such info?) Our buddies ask if you banged that chick from the bar last night........My point being that our straight sexuality is on display, most of the time.

    3) Please share the link of just ONE instance of a gay person coming out and then sharing intimate details of who they're sleeping with. I missed it. All the interviews I've ever heard dealt with the struggles of playing the sport while closeted.

    4) "All about"? Someone comes out and all of a sudden that's all they're about? Common Now. lol

Anyway, if and when someone decides to be the Gay Jackie Robinson, I hope it is an elite player. It would greatly help with team and public acceptance.

You remember when Magic Johnson revealed that he had aids and certain players were saying they didn't wanna play against him because they were afraid they would get aids from his blood or fluids getting in a cut that they had or something like that? And also Tommy Morrison the boxer isn't allowed to box anymore because of safety reasons that have to do with the fact that he also has aids. I just wonder if any NFL players will say that they don't wanna play with someone like that because of the same risks. I mean it's pretty common to bleed in the NFL right and to have open sores? I wonder if players will say that's something they're worried about. The reason I say this is because I saw a stat the other day arguing that same sex marriage will create a public safety issue. It said that 5% of the worlds population is is homosexual but has 57% of the hiv virus and counted for over 50% of all stds. It came from some gay lifestyle magazine that was talking about misconceptions about the gay community. The magazine or article or whatever was being quoted said that it's a misconception that there are no health risks involved and it said it's a stereotype that all gay men are really fit and have no stds or other problems. For example it said the suicide rate is astronomical among that community. There was also another stat they gave that is very inflammatory and I'm not gonna put it on here for the sake of civility. But with all this being said I really bet there will be some players that will be strongly opposed to playing with or against someone if they knew that about them. But if those guys express an opinion about it they will get destroyed by the media. Remember when Tim Hardaway said he "just don't like gay people"? Or when the guy on Grey's Anatomy called another guy a gay slur and wound up in "rehab" because of it? Don't you think the same could happen? And one more thing about people saying it would be ok for them to talk openly about their sexuality. Are the same people who are in this camp the same people that were happy about Tim Tebow openly and visually and verbally expressing his Christian lifestyle? Seems to me there were a lot of people saying Tebow would be better off to keep that to himself right? I mean the whole "Tebowing" thing was really a mockery of Tebow in most cases. I wonder if guys will take pictures of themselves bending over and name that after the gay player? I can't remember who it was but someone sacked Tebow and then "Tebowed" right in front of him. I wonder if they will do the same to the gay guy? I guarantee you this. If they do they will not be treated as just "joking" or whatever.

Haven't been to San Francisco lately? It's a definite....disadvantage to be straight there. Where someone likes to put their tingly parts is no one else's business. Stop trying to make it my business.

BFT, do you recall where you saw this article?? Just looking at it using common sense, this looks like pure BS from those who love to use fear tactics to impose their views. An eight year old can tell you that if people are marrying into a loving monogamous relationship, they're not going to be spreading any STDs.

I would think that a large number of AIDS cases come from drug users, sharing of needles. In any rate, even if those numbers are correct, there could be straight guys on the field who have AIDS as well but won't see anyone raising any concerns beforehand. And I'm talking about early stages of AIDS too because once it's taken hold, I doubt anyone is playing football anymore, I don't think their body could meet the physical demands. I know Magic played basketball again but I don't know for how long but that's not nearly as rigorous as football.

And yes, just as I don't care about a persons sexuality, I didn't care about Tebows Tebowing. If the idiot media didn't focus on it so much it never would have amounted to anything. He's also not the only one to pray after a score or what not. I've been watching guys go to a knee and make the sign of a cross after scoring TD's, I seen guys point to the sky in recognition of God, I've seen baseball players make the sign of the cross when stepping into the batters box but for some reason Tebows kneeling became a national sensation. Stupid really. Much more important things in the world that people could concern themselves with. This basically falls under MYOB!

Oh my GOD!! Thank YOU!! Who the HELL cares if the player is gay, straight, white, black, tall, short...etc. As long as he can PLAY the game, does it matter who he sleeps with?

I saw it on theblaze.com in a forum where people were discussing this but I don't have a link to it. I probably wouldn't even be able to find the comment. But I did see it though. But do you refute the stats about 5% are gay and 57% of the worlds aids are among gay people? I'm just curious is all. I'm not trying to be combative or flame you or anything. I'm sure there is a lot of aids among the gay community and didn't in the 80s a disproportionate number of gay men die from it? I really was surprised that they accounted for a majority of the aids cases though because of the epidemic in Africa. Isn't that where the largest concentration of aids is in the world?

That's what I said about Tebow. I would say "this has been going on forever". How is he new to expressing his faith openly in sports? But here's the thing about Tebow that fascinated people I think. They believed he was absolutely genuine and people like that are the ones they love to build up in order to tear down. There's nothing like a "fall from grace" story that makes the media salivate. You are also right about a straight player could have aids. I really think it would make a lot of people nervous to play against them and I would really like to know if the league has a policy in place to deal with a situation like that. I mean maybe there's some obscure rule they put in place after the thing happened with Magic Johnson because until then leagues had probably never had to face anything like that.

Hey here is one link that says basically the same thing. I'm sorry I couldn't find the exact article but this one quotes the center for disease control and was the first one that popped up on my google. I've never heard of this site but I guess it's just some like gathered data site like wikipedia or something.

Thanks, I'll try to find the article.

I can't speak to the stats. Just in general, I know that the rates had been dropping for the longest time in the gay community, growing in others...But, had started to bump up a bit lately due to AIDS no longer being seen as an automatic death sentence.

That whole part about marriage leading to increases in STDs and HIV infections was so egregiously wrong that you can't trust anything else in the article. I do want to read it for myself though.

Just the name on your link suggests the story may be slanted. ;)

But I'll accept it at face value nevertheless for the sake of discussion. Even if all true, it doesn't really mean anything on an individual basis. It still comes down to lifestyle, and someone who engages in unnecessarily risky behavior is of course at risk.

To wit: Magic Johnson and Tommy Morrison (your 2 examples of straight guys with HIV). Was it that they were straight? Or that they played roulette a bit too much? ;)

Even if there's a trend within the gay community (still not proven if it's a causal link), it doesn't mean anything on an individual basis. Just as Magic Johnson's admitted lifestyle wouldn't apply to me - another straight man.

Would certain players try that argument out? Maybe. Or maybe we've grown up a bit more since the Magic Johnson days.

Why can't it be a Wide Receiver? or Maybe just a Ball Boy?
