He has also had the same offensive line coach for two years. Who was it that claimed Moore had already given up and Jones was out starting left tackle?

In polite society it is, I believe the king's English still uses the term. It may have fallen out of favor in the U.S. due to America's prudish impulses around the word cock. :hmm: hmmmm I may need to run a tally on game days to see how many broadcasters use the words cocked and ready.

I saw this plenty in watching my son's U12 soccer team this summer. His coaches never worked on teamwork and team concepts so you had 12 kids on the team playing for themselves instead of working together.

My cousin was a high school standout in football in Ohio which was a pretty big deal considering how bad his asthma was. He played several positions but excelled as the place kicker. He tried to walk on for two years at Ohio State before realizing that standout in high school isn't the same caliber as OSU scholarship players. Sudden reality checks like that sometimes suck.

Ok I have to get your opinion on this given your previous profession and your current one. The statement I highlighted has been made by other members over the course of the last decade mostly to claim victory in some sort of bold pronouncement, not you in this case, but I was wondering how correct the statement is. I would think the phrasing would be better in stating that "your" thoughts agree with Tomlin's assessment of his players rather than his being a reflection of yours, assuming that you aren't a known confidant and advisor to Tomlin. Purely curious about this.

Exactly. That is poor coaching IMO.

I see your point. Sure, I could phrase that more carefully. While I do my best to utilize proper rhetorical structure and grammar and follow the conventions of the English language whenever I write anything, I am not nearly as careful about my posts here as I would be if they were published in a news outlet or if they were included in something my students would read. If I was writing it in a news column and taking the time to read through it and edit it carefully, I probably would have ended up breaking that into two sentences. Short sentences are more easily digestible and they avoid any potential confusion. My point is that playing against weak competition more than makes up for having lesser players around the quarterback on offense. Tomlin clearly holds a similar belief.

To be clear. I've never even met Tomlin. Cowher was still the coach when I last worked as a sports reporter in Pittsburgh.

At some point we all find out our limitations. Your cousin is a great story. Too bad he wasn't able to fully live his dream. Unfortunately, almost nobody does!

Bo Orlando is my cousin. He played safety for the Steelers his last year in pro football in 1998. I didn't really know him. I think I met him when we were kids. He was a distant cousin on my mother's side. He was a great local athlete, All-American player at West Virginia, had a solid NFL career, and is by all accounts a great guy.

He is a far more accomplished athlete than I ever was, but it's pretty cool having a relative that played for the Steelers.

I hope your cousin's asthma is under control and he's enjoying life.

well 1 year and one camp. i have said a few times on this site the thing that moore was being credited with by many during his draft was, he may not have been the best in that draft but he had the highest ceiling of anyone in that draft. it was going to take some time. also as his coaches have said , he doesn't make the same mistakes twice. give me a guy like this any day. one that works hard to get better and works at his craft. i think moore is going to be a hard out.

That is awesome. I can barely jump. and do not ask me to throw a kick while jumping. I do much better kicking from the ground.

His marked improvement is why I didn’t want them to draft ol in the first round. Now we need either moore or Jones to become a right tackle.

During summer camp in Latrobe, my 5 year-old daughter wanted Kenny Pickett's autograph, but Kendrick Green stepped in front of her to block her from getting to him. She lowered her shoulder and pushed right past him. That's when I realized there was a problem.

Yes, they have to take some of the blame. They clearly over valued him. He had three, one, two, three starts at center at Illionois. Most of his offensive line starts were at left guard. They bring him in and make him their staring center. No wonder he failed. Does he stink at it? Of course, he does, or we wouldn't be having this discussion. The Steelers passed on Creed Humphrey (a stud of a center that ended up in KC) and took Freiermuth. Although they got an excellent football player, I have always felt you build your team from the trenches out. They neglected this offensive line for years and then when they were up against it, they overreached for Green to replace Pouncey like they did for Bush to replace Shazier.

That is all water over the dam. I seriously hope this team is planning on bringing in a reliable vet with verifiable NFL experience at center. Or barring that, they have a plan for Daniels who has some NFL experience as center to play in the event Cole is injured. I hate for the season to be lost because they lack a capable back-up center.

This exactly. It's not that I didn't, or don't think Jones will be good, but I felt it was a waste for the same reason You just mentioned.
