Immediate Observation: The Cleveland Browns got the better end of the deal this week when they unloaded Joe Haden to the Steelers and we trade Sammie Coates to them.

Say what you will but I see Haden as past his prime. What does it say when the Browns cut you in favor of 4-5 other CB's? Second, I am a huge Sammie Coates fan. I thought he showed tremendous talent and even more potential. He also doesn't have a big head like Bryant or Brown (Yes, I said it).

It may be corny to say but Coates has the mentality that this team desperately needs. A true grind-it-out, nothing flashy kind of work ethic. This Pittsburgh team has the most talented roster in the NFL (even more than the Patriots or Falcons) yet has failed to get to the Super Bowl in nearly a decade.

Pittsburgh doesn't need any more talent on this team, they need character!

I think you in the minority among Steelers fans, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    Time will tell.

Im one of Coates biggest fans but after a day of digesting the news, I have to think that the coaching staff didnt feel he was going to regain form that he displayed early last season before getting injured. His fingers are pointing in different directions, maybe other receivers with hands like that can overcome it but he hasnt shown he can yet.

I hope he can, because I agree, hes a good guy and hard worker and wish him well.

I was a Coates fan, but his attitude and character wouldn't rank amongst his best traits IMO.

He was stuck behind a deep WR corps. Plain and simple. Hunter outplayed him in preseason.

As for Haden, I hear alot of 'he's not as good as he use to be'. This may be true. But he's still better than what we got.

Thats the opposite from what I would read up on him.

Anything specific happen for feeling that way?

OK, Joe Haden is about as high character as they come, so your statements seem a bit contradictory.

I pretty much disagree with everything here. But I'm glad you posted it. Always good to have varying opinions.

Sorry, that wasn't a negative slight towards him. I guess I just never read anything that lauded those traits. I know some people had grumbled that he didn't celebrate with his teammates as others. Maybe that he always saw other WRs as his competito on rather than teammates.

I always saw him as a talented H-W-S guy. Underproduced at Auburn but had a good Senior Bowl.

I expect him to be productive in Cleveland if he can snag a Top 3 spot.

I don't know if the clowns got the better part of the deal, they will still be in the cellar...

I was surprised with the trade. Haden brings experience and solidifies the outside with Burns. A much needed signing.

How? We were cutting Coates. Hunter won the bone as Tomlin would put it. So cut him and get nothing or at least get something in return. Chances are Cleveland would have gotten him on waivers.

Look, we are talking about the Browns. I think the whole team is new except for Thomas. Haden, will be fine. The Only Brown, that I trust and word I'm going on ...is AB's. He said that he's a good cb and I trust his evaluation.
I was one, on the Coates bandwagon, and get rid of dhb. But, if you cant catch a pass from Ben...how much better do you think he will do from a rookie qb ?!

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I saw those same complaints here about his non celebrating, sounded like fan mumbo jumbo to me.

The link that steeldeal provided are the types of things Ive read about him.

Its unfortunate about his hand, his arrow was pointed up here.

Coates was a fine players and I think his hand injury may be the problem but he was caught up in a numbers game here and what a great problem for us to have. Haden I hope will improve our DB position more than Coates will improve our WR position just based on depth alone. I wish Coates well...not against us but no way did the Clowns get the better deal. jmo

My take on Joe Haden's apparent productivity decrease the past two years is more business related. The number 1 item on the list to deal with groin injuries is rest. It appears he tried to come back early but it was either still sore or he re-aggravated it. He was probably talked into coming back before he was ready, and was tentative and that led to a decline in his play (getting beat more often). Then when the season for them became lost (debatable if it was ever not lost) he probably said enough is enough and put the business side of the sport ahead of playing. Personally I don't blame him. Why rush back to a team on an 0-16 path? Better yet, why would the team want to rush him back?

Only Joe knows the real answer. But groin injuries do heal. He may be susceptible to another one, but that's the risk we take.

His other injuries in 2015 are not something I'm concerned about. The concussion is sort of out of his control. The protocol to come back from concussions is dictated by the league now. Also he doesn't play a position that is necessarily concussion-prone. It could happen, but it could happen to anyone.

I like Haden. I think we get something closer to the 2014. If he still has injuries we have a cap friendly contract and part ways. Playing for a champion contender is much different than a cellar dweller, and I think he knows that.

As for Coates... he just seems like a dime a dozen WR in my book. Great straight line speed. Big and strong to win 1 on 1 battles for the ball if he has gained the position. Lazy route runner and below average hands. Probably a good guy but I don't know. He had 3 training camps with us... if he can't solidify a spot by now then I'm fine for dealing him. Nothing about him separates him from most other WRs that come and go each year.

He's an instant upgrade for the Stains, but can't make the roster with us. We made them give up a draft pick whereas we got Hayden for free (from them). I don't think they wound up with the better end in my opinion.

I think the Browns won the trades battle...but the Steelers won the free agent war.

Haden even at half strength is a major coup in the AFCN

I am very excited by Haden and Burns....Hilton, Sutton, Allen....Gay is still Gay...but at least on paper..this is the best secondary I have seen here in years.

And they are near the top of the heap for waiver claims, so I don't get why they didn't simply wait for him to be cut.

maybe they wanted to use their waiver claim on another player and they didn't think they could land both, so they traded for one while using their top waiver claim on the other player. But I'm not sure how the waiver process works, are they at the top of the waiver priority for every player or does it somehow rotate??

edit--just read an article where it says the team has that priority ranking for every player
