Crazy how many free agents the Steelers have been "interested" in this offseason.

I think they are just looking and if they come across a good deal they are going to take it.

I think the steelers are trying to start a retirement home or something... Lets get freeney, urlacher, bring back Harrison...We will have our own ole' timers league

Well, what you're talking about and what my original comment was about are different things. That's because my comment was not about the reality of the situation, which you have down. It was about the idea that when a player has already peaked and is on the downside of their career, and it becomes difficult or impossible for them to remain with the team they've been with for a long time, they should just retire instead of continuing to play, for legacy's sake. I think they should do what they want to do, and there's not really a wrong answer. But the "Boy, I just can't picture Jerry Rice in a Raiders uniform. He should just retire" is idiotic and selfish. I know players are often selfish, and are often accused of being selfish for not doing what's in the best interest of the fans, but while it's nice for them to consider fans and teammates, it's still their life that they're making decisions about. It takes some set to say a guy should do what you want him to do with his life: where he should live, how much money he should make, what memories and regrets he'll have... instead of what he wants - because you watched him on tv and wanted him to win in the games he played.

This reminds me a bit of the Mike Wallace debates, in that I'm not really taking the stance people connect me to, I'm just trying to stop things from going too far. I never, ever said I wanted to sign Wallace for $10 million per year. I wouldn't pay him a penny more than I paid Brown. And after seeing the way Haley used him (or didn't use him), there's no reason to keep him around at all. But I had to defend him left and right from people just making stuff up to make themselves feel better.

Harrison can tarnish his legacy, depending on what he does. At this point I don't blame him for a thing, because the only mistake he made was a miscalculation, like you said. He guessed other teams wanted him more than the Steelers, and so far it looks like he guessed wrong. He may not wind up with more money, but in his mind he was leaving for more money. That doesn't tarnish anything except my faith in his agent's talent for gauging desire for his client around the league. He looks like an idiot, but again, that's pretty meaningless. We got idiots left and right. If he were to sign with Baltimore just to punish Pittsburgh, that would be different. Especially if he had better offers from us (a lower new one, not counting the original), or other random teams that aren't Pittsburgh rivals. That would show that he is filled with hatred or contempt for the organization. I could see that as a stain on his legacy, for sure. Although I'll also say that he could still sign with Baltimore for legitimate reasons besides payback. It kind of is a good fit and would be natural, which is what has me worried. But in the more likely event that he signs with some other team, even for less than we offer, I won't see it as a betrayal or punishment. I'll see it as an excess of pride. That's not hatred, that's being butthurt and embarrassed. To me that's a bummer, but if that happens, I'll mostly just feel pity for James. Then I'll remember he's not that great a guy and get over it, and remember him saving our Super Bowl.

Yeah. I wouldn't pay him much at all, but I don't see the downside of him. I know we need to get younger and not older, but right now we don't even have any youth to play. We could get some, but they won't be ready. We know what Foote offers. I don't know if Urlacher could give us more, but it wouldn't surprise me. Pretty sure he's better in coverage than Foote, and maybe playing in a 3-4 will help him out. He won't be the only ILB, and he'll be next to Timmons, who is the opposite of old and slow. Plus, we pretty much have no depth.

I didn't see many Bears games this year, but I trust LeBeau/Butler/Tomlin to know if he could hang. This is one of those where I don't know much what I'm talking about because I haven't seen him lately, so whatever they decide to do I will be happy with. But I'm glad they're looking into him. I think that's definitely the right move.

He didn't sign with the Bears because they wouldn't give him 3 million for one year. I don't know if Steelers can afford that? Didn't we already give 3 million to Foote, how would that work out?

Personally I think he is done, but Urlacher contests he just wasn't healthy last year, and he is finally healthy now...so he could be a steal?

Its a gamble...The deciding factor is how much better you think he is than Foote at this point. Can Urlacher make more splash plays during the year for us (Sacks, fumbles, INT's), particularly in the playoffs???

I would say a pass rusher would be more dire.

You and I obviously see this two very different ways. I'm not saying Harrison is trying to stick it to the fans but you can bet he would like nothing more than to stick it to the Rooneys and Kevin Colbert at this point. JH can do what he durn well pleases but from my perspective, IF he signs with the Rats for a sum less than what the Steelers offered, LEGACY TARNISHED.

And Snack, you've got to get over this misconception that just because somebody has a differing opinion than you on a subject that their opinions are IDIOTIC and SELFISH.

I don't know how many people here have watched Urlacher over the past 3-4 seasons but every game that I have seen him play he has been a total non factor. Basically he covers the middle of the field well but little else. He's always late to the tackle and basically runs to the spot of the tackle being made but not actively making it himself. In other words, his instincts are very slow. Honestly, I'm baffled why the Steelers would even entertain the idea. We already have Foote there and he is much quicker.

Well like I said above, I don't necessarily disagree with you on that. I think it's possible for him to do it "cleanly", and it's possible it'll be ugly. But nothing's happened yet, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't think that. People disagree all the time, and it doesn't make one of them an idiot. But at the same time, everyone knows that some things are idiotic. I pointed one out in that specific scenario I outlined. But the more I think about it, I should have said "idiotic or selfish", because I guess that person either never considers empathy, or considers and disregards it, but it can't be both.

It's not his instincts that are slow. It's his legs. However, the end result is the same. He has really declined in the past couple of years.

I'd prefer we stop looking at AARP card carrying members. If he was playing lights out that would be one thing but he's not and doesn't, clearly on the decline, no thanks.

I haven't seen any of the National guys who cover the NFL report this, just like the Steelers are reportedly interested in Freeney and Dumervil. Since when do the Steelers sign big name free agents.

This makes no sense at all to me. I think the Steelers are just reaching out to guys and saying "Hey wanna play for practically nothing? No? Okay just checkin..." I don't really see a good reason to look at Urlacher...

    * Urlacher has been in decline for several years and has no chance at staying with a RB or TE in coverage

    * We just signed Foote to a new contract. I would say Foote and Urlacher are about = but give Foote the edge because he knows our system.

    * The Bears offered Urlacher a contract that I heard was up to 2 mil a year, but was heavy on incentive bonuses which he viewed as a "slap in the face." Would we give him even 2 mil a year?

    * The Vikings were the first rumored interest but stated they weren't going to pursue him unless he lowers his asking price.

I would much rather spend that money on Victor Butler who I think could actually be an option for the future at OLB, than a 1 year pointless signing like Urlacher.
