Same reason Harrison waited, if these guys think they can heal without it, they are going to go that route first. No such thing as "minor" surgery.

It is only minor when it is someone other than yourself having it.

Ben was interviewed later and said he had surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL, PCL and a dislocated patella, but that he'll be ready to go by training camp. ;)

I saw the director's cut where Ben revealed he had that same procedure an hour before the Titans game last season, and the morning of the Giants game as well.

Is kinda funny tho, how all we kept hearing him say in interviews all offseason so far, was how healthy he finally felt...
    Oh well...
What would ya expect him to say?
Sometimes makes me wonder why I bother to follow what the players/coaches say in interviews...
Obviously, they are never gonna reveal anything that would put them at a disadvantage...
Which is pretty much anything significant...
Hope Troy ain`t lyin about how good he feels... :praying:

In all seriousness, does this concern anyone else? Don't want to make more out of this than what it is, but Blast Furnace and I have had multiple enthusiastic discussions about the backside of Ben's career with me expressing serious concern because of the pounding that Ben has taken up to this point in his career. I've speculated that Ben may not have as long a career as some QBs but BF basically tells me to chill out and that Ben's nowhere close to the end of his career, citing QBs like Favre, Manning and others. I'm not sure how much more of a pounding Ben's body can take. That's why I think Haley could be a godsend for Ben if he'll listen. That's also the reason I was a strong proponent of the Steelers drafting a quarterback THIS YEAR that could develop into a quality starter. Don't want to be negative, but I'm afraid these little nagging injury issues may become more and more commonplace for Ben.

I'll start getting worried if he doesn't make it through this season. A healthy younger line, a game plan designed to keep him upright, a running game that will hopefully take some of the load off him, if he still suffers a big injury with all that, then we may have a problem.

He had essentially the same procedure in 2005 on his other knee and only missed one game. The other knee has been fine since then. The Dr. is the same Dr. who preformed the last procedure and said the knee looked healthy when he opened him up. There's nothing to worry about here.

Just that Ben's 8 years older and has taken about 5,000 hits since then.

I would be surprised if he makes it another 5 years.
That would be about a 15 year career, and he would be 35, if I remember things correctly.
Others have made it longer, but other than Farve, I don`t think they have had the toll taken on their body, on, and off-field that he has.
(And I really don`t wanna see him become a media punchline, like Brett did. I respect the hell outta that qb)
I would love to be wrong, but I`m just not that optimistic.
IF he changes his style, considerably, I guess it`s possible.. but, I just don`t ever see him being a "pure pocket passer", and abandoning the sandlot style he has.
Live with it, die by it... It`s just who he is...
Hopefully he gets us another ring or two, before his body gives out on him ( because I doubt he will quit, while his body is capable of playing)...
Not sure if Landry Jones will be his succesor, But I certainly don`t think it was too soon to start thinking about it, as much as I hate to think about it.

I heard that Ben had an accident where he was sacked while riding his motorcycle. As he was flying through the air someone punched him in the nose (oddly enough it was in the opposite direction of his last hit in the nose, thus, making his nose normal again). When he landed someone, rushing up to help, stepped on his ankle. When they fell it was on top of Ben, displacing his rib. Incidentally, during all of this his right arm fell off. He had minor surgery to repair all of this, except his nose, but he feels like he will be back in time for training camp and plans on taking over at Left Tackle. I heard this from a reliable source. Your welcome!

The break down continues, catch him now folks, you may not see him
in a Steeler uniform in Three years. He is one tough Hombre and truly gifted athlete
but after taking as many hits as he has over is career? And you wonder why he can't throw the deep out?
You wonder why he has lost his MAGIC.

I don't think it is the start of the end for Ben. It was a minor surgery and something to clean up an item that had been bothering him for quite a while. I think just the opposite. With the new offense etc. I think Haley etc. will extend his career. If this was the 7th surgery on that same knee I would be concerned.

    Jim great post. :)

the trouble i have is ben won't let himself heal either. he'll be running the team if he can make it to the huddle with help. he has hurt us several times playing when he should have been sitting another week or two. ben is not good when he doesn't practice. it hurts the team at times. similar to leftwich last year. everyone in the world knew he was hurt but MT.

Not really sure what that has to do with a simple knee scope, JA.
Is that true? That can't be right...

From Ed Bouchette's column this morning:

--- Ben Roethlisberger’s knee surgery is a big deal because, well, he’s Ben Roethlisberger. However, Dan Marino had these routine surgeries built into his routine when he was playing. Marino called them “oil changes” and they usually did not keep him from playing. He had at least five during his playing career. He played in a then-quarterback-record 145 consecutive games before an Achilles tendon injury in 1993 sidelined him.

--- If he were having the surgery in the middle of the season, Roethlisberger would miss three games.

--- The Steelers had to have had in mind what happened to James Harrison last year when he tried to work through the “discomfort” in his knee throughout the first half of the year and then wound up having surgery during training camp.

ed has to remember marino wasen't sacked much either. he had a quick release and didn't hold the ball. big difference in the pounding they have taken. scar tissue, arthrietis any of this has to be a bigger concern to ben after so many different injuries. it's just the nature of the human body. heck danno had knee trouble at pitt didn't he?

aaron rodgers didn't play his first 3 seasons did he?
