I was hoping we would reload, but I am not seeing the talent behind the
so called starters as being that good. No difference makers on this team
atleast on the defensive side of the ball. I guess that the late picking in the
draft has caught up to us? I am not to confident of Mike Tomlins leadership
abilities if we do have to rebuild.Thank goodness we have #7 on our team, he will
    atleast keep us respectable.

If we add some playmaker's to the defense we'll be fine.

We never had a qb in the 80's after TB, so right there is a major difference. Plus, we are loaded on the offensive side, the defense is struggling right now but I think enough talent is there, just need a couple more pieces.

Another big difference was that the Steelers drafted poorly in the '80s.

While, they've had a few years recently where they didn't appear to get a lot out of the draft, I still think they have drafted reasonably well. It's still too early to tell in a lot of cases, but by and large they have drafted better in recent years than they did back then.

Now if Mendenhall can't come back, Pouncey injuries become an every year thing, and DeCastro is a bust maybe that changes things. But it's odds against that all that happends.

If Ben wasn't on this team we would have been stuck in the 80's since 04'.

The 80's always had an above average Defense but absolutely no offense.

If he gets hurt we're officially done. Stick a fork in it. The Fat lady would sing her last note.

i agree for the first part but i think we need more than a couple of pieces on defense in the next future let's say a couple of lbs a couple of def lineman and a couple of safeties

Agree on the first two points. Also add that the AFC central was pretty strong in the late 80s - the Bengals had their superbowl runs, the Browns had pretty much their best teams ever at that time, and the Oilers were fairly consistent throughout.

Flash forward to now, and it's not quite the same - the Bengals and Browns are both promising good things (former more than the latter), but not quite there yet; the Ravens are the main threat.

To your last point: I think we can manage in the short term without Ben - cover a game of three - but he is a difference maker. If he was done for the season, we would likely sink.

The 80s are kind of hazy, but didn't Magnum P.I. quarterback the Steelers for a few years? He was good, right? :hehehe:

You make agood point,I seem to remember some pretty poor
draft picks in the 80's What are your thoughts of Ziggy Hood, Worilds, Lewis, Mundy, TIMMONS,
    Gilbert, Colon Adams ?

The 80's and part of the 90's were difficult for teams like the Steelers because there was no cap and owners in New York, San Fran, Washington etc. out-spent the small market teams. Throw in an out-dated offense that Bubby Brister once claimed should, "just punt on 1st down and get it over with" and it was a recipe for mediocrity.
