My wife would like to have an Ipad but I really don't know anything about them other than they are extremely expensive. Someone today told me at work that they have old ipads you can get for a lot cheaper. I was just curious if anyone on here knew if the original ones were still dependable. Also what are they worth? If anyone on here has one I would like to buy it if you wanna get rid of it. She wants one but has no idea that I'm gonna try to get her one for Christmas. Even if noone has one they would like to sale I would just like to know what I should expect to pay or if they are worth buying used and all that jazz. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I don't think they're worth the money. They're basically just neutered laptops IMO. With that being said you can find older/ refurbished apple products on their site for a decent discount. As a Linux/Unix fan I like the Apple operating system, but wouldn't pay what they're asking.

The jumps from the iPad 1 to 2 is pretty significant, but the 1 is still really nice if you can find one cheap... However, the jump from 2 to 3 was practically non-existant. The hi-res screen was really the only upgrade...

I bought one last year refurbished and saved a little money. It still comes with a warranty. I had an issue with mine and they swapped it out for a new one.

What do you think I'd be looking at pricewise for an Ipad 2? I mean what is reasonable ya know?

As with all Apple products, it depends on the model memory-wise and whether or not you want to use it on a cellular network or just on a Wi-Fi connection. You're looking at anywhere from $400 for the 16gb Wi-Fi only model to up around $600+ for a 32gb 3G+Wi-Fi model. However, at that price, unless you are dead-set on using it on a cellular connection, you can get a 32gb iPad 3 Wi-Fi for the same price. The difference between the 2 and "3" is the retina display on the 3 as well as a different (more powerful) processor. I don't have the 2, but I've been told if you already have it, then an upgrade to a 3 is not really price-worthy. However, if you don't have an iPad at all or have the first gen, then you'd be better off going for the 3.

    Hope that helps.

Well at gamestop they have a used Ipad 1 for $294. Is that a good deal? I think they have a 16 and a 32. I don't think she'd wanna use it with a cell phone though.

Not sure about gamestop, but IMHO, you'd probably be better off getting a refurb iPad 2 for $319 directly from Apple. Their refurbs are basically good as new from what I've heard, and they come with a 1 year apple warranty. Big step up from the used 1st gen for not much more and it's warrantied. Just a heads up.

TTF is right on point with that, and also the new ipad mini's are $329 brand new. Smaller version of an ipad, but still decently larger than the iphone

I have an Ipad 2, got it the year it came out, and I really really like it. I have the Sunday ticket app which allows me to watch a game different from what I have on TV (like yesterday, I had the Bengals game on while watching the Steelers.) It can do most of the things you really use a laptop to do and it is very intuitive and easy and fast. I only have the wifi version (have iphone 5 with 4g) but I am very happy with it and have traveled with it easily several times.

Thanks to everyone for all the info. I really wanna get the Ipad 2 but it's strictly a matter of dollars and cents. My wife is pregnant with our 2nd one and we need to save up for her maternity leave and since I work at UPS this is the time of year where I make the most money obviously so I was trying to get her one for as reasonable as I could. That way maybe I can put back a little more to help her be off work for 2 months or so.

Agree with TTF. If you're going to get one, at least get a 2 (no pun intended).

You know it really depends what she's going to use it for. My Wife wanted an I-Pad but knew she wouldn't use it's full capability. I Bought her a Kindle Fire instead and it was perfect for her needs (Reading books, occasional web surfing and shopping). I myself will be buying an android tablet, either a Nexus 7 or a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. Much cheaper than Ipads with more functionality.

I'll second the Nexus 7 suggestion. It's a smaller screen than a standard iPad, but I've had one for about a month now and I love it, and it does have some useful features that I don't have using ios on my iPhone.
