I`m going to be going to the outdoor winter classic hockey game in Detroit on New Years Day. My original plan was to party in Windsor on New Years Eve, get a hotel in Windsor and then cross the border the next morning for the hockey game.

There`s a couple problems with that plan though. Hotels in Windsor are few and far between for NYE, and what`s left is insanely overpriced. I`ve also been told that the bordering crossing could be hours long because of all the people going to the hockey game.

So I have a couple questions.

Is it likely that crossing will take hours to get into Detroit from Windsor on either New Years Eve or New Years Day?

Secondly, as a Canadian I hear nothing but horror stories about how dangerous Detroit is. As I am considering getting a hotel in Detroit for NYE, is it reasonably safe for an out of towner to party in the Detroit bars on New Years Eve and be in the streets after the bars let out? I can handle myself pretty well and I generally know how to avoid problems, but obviously I`d be powerless against a large group or against a gun.

Where are most of the Detroit bars, downtown? Is Detroit a good place to party on New Years Eve?
