So I just got a letter from a collection agency and their client is a state comptroller(taxes) for a state I've never worked in. WTF? All I can think is my identity has been stolen. I'm sitting here laughing about this knowing full well the fight that's going to ensue will be an absolute nightmare. Outside of calling the state comptroller in question I'm not sure wtf I'm supposed to do? I called the collection agency and talked to them and their only advice is to call the comptroller.:lolol::facepalm::lolol::facepalm:

Dude that is HORRIBLE! So you have to at LEAST cancel all your credit cards and things like that right? I did lose a credit card once and had to jump through hoops just to get that stupid thing cancelled. Sean Hannity always advertises for some company that is supposed to help people if this happens to them and protect them from it happening. Maybe going forward you should consider a membership in something like that. I really hate to hear this happened to you.

Before you do anything drastic like cancelling any credit cards or anything...you need to contact the state to verify the info. You could be being scammed.

This would be on your credit report from Experian or TransUnion, right? Wouldn't hurt to have a look and see what's on there. Maybe there's a bunch of incorrect info, or maybe there's nothing.

Just got off the phone with the comptroller and the fix appears to be surprisingly easy. I faxed them a copy of my 1099 to prove that I'm not a resident and didn't earn any money there and poof it's taken care of. Now I have to figure out why.

The thing is, if it's identity theft, canceling cards won't solve anything long term because whoever has your identity can keep ordering new ones. Identity theft is a big nightmare that can take years to correct.

I hope for your sake Strummer, that this is just a glitch and not a case of identity theft.

Man I didn't know about all that. That would be super lame! I bet you could pretty much never catch the person that does it to you neither huh?
