Those of us of a "certain age" will remember. If you had siblings, when one of us would get sick say, with mumps, the parents would deliberately put us together so we'd all get sick at the same time. Mom could take care of us all at once rather than one at a time.

    I blame Tomlin and Canada.

1984 was a good book and album.
VH always had a great show. Drop Dead Legs was 1 of my favorite songs on 84

Steven Tyler was really good vamping too..

Your analogy doesn't work at all. Choosing vasectomy or pulling out doesn't affect the spread of a deadly disease.

Yes I remember the Mumps, Measles and Chicken pox parties from the 1950's and 60's. If some kid had one of these diseases the other moms would bring their kids to play with the infected one so they would all get it. Back then it was inevitable that you would get one of these childhood diseases and the quicker you got them the better because they were more serious as you grew older. They weren't without risk though because I remember my cousin lost an eye because of chicken pox back around 1960.

None of us had any lasting affects from doing this. I was a Navy brat growing up and, when we were stationed overseas, we had to get vaccinated for EVERYTHING. I still remember how bad the cholera shots/boosters hurt!

That's what my parents did us, but it was a neighborhood event where we all were gather at one house to play inside (while getting exposed). I am the youngest in my family, so I got exposed to everything early.

Yes, It's like smallpox, before the discovery of the vaccine, it devastated the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Many built a natural a immunity. It's the reason the Spanish that arrived in the Americas were like a smallpox version of Typhoid Mary.

This virus is nothing like smallpox. That may be the worst analogy ever.

I was talking about building immunity, not severity

    https://www.who.int/news-room/spotlight/history-of-vaccination/a-brief-history-of-vaccination

From at least the 15th century, people in different parts of the world have attempted to prevent illness by intentionally exposing healthy people to smallpox– a practice known as variolation (after a name for smallpox, ‘la variole’). Some sources suggest these practices were taking place as early as 200 BCE.

You’re referring to herd immunity. It’s great in theory, but at what cost. Look at Norway and Sweden. They share a border and took two different paths dealing with Covid 19. Sweden had a population of roughly 10million people while Norway is roughly half that. Sweden decided to try and achieve herd immunity while protecting the elderly etc and Norway took a testing/containment/lockdown path. After 18 months 3400 Norwegians had died due to Covid while their next door neighbors lost nearly 20,000 people. So basically 5 times as many people died trying to achieve herd immunity.

No, I'm not. I'm an English teacher, which means I know about the appropriate and accurate use of language. Part of that is avoiding logical fallacies. One logical fallacy is the false analogy, which is what you used in your inaccurate post.

I'm also an experienced researcher from my days as a journalist, a skill I teach to my students now. That means I know how to gain an accurate understanding of unfamiliar topics. At least in that one false analogy, you failed to do that properly.
