Heyward signed a contract extension last year, he has another 3-4 years left.

Which will be eaten up fast because the number of players under contract drops next season as well.

Interesting that 2 coaches left the organization that knew more than Tomlin about their side of the ball. LeBeau left and went to Tennessee and had a few successful seasons with their defense. Then the debacle with Bruce Arians firing/retirement. Both Tomlins decisions that were not good.

I am starting to think Tomlin doesn't want anyone to challenge him with items in their expertise. Maybe why we promote from within so Tomlin can be in control. Not a good recipe for future success. Surround yourself with experts and make your job easier to manage the items you need to for the team.

I'm starting to think you don't know what you're talking about, Art sent Arians on his way, it was time for LeBeau to go his defenses became too predictable.

Actually, replacing Arians with Haley was a good thing. Arians indulged Roethlisberger too much. For all his flaws, Haley got Roethlisberger to be a little smarter about getting the ball out quicker. Sure, Roethlisberger has taken that too far of late, but at the time, it made him a better quarterback.

Yup, Tomlin actually told Arians his job was safe. Art “retired” Arians like they “retired” LeBeau.

I remember hearing rumors that Cowher wanted to be paid once he won the super bowl. It never happened and he retired. The Steelers were very cheap with players until the salary cap began. It’s not surprising to hear we don’t want to pay an assistant coach

John Mitchell is the Assistant Head Coach though.

I wasn’t implying we don’t have assistant coaches. I was trying to say I am not surprised to hear we are to cheap to pay for a quality assistant coach or OC or DC. Which explains why we hire from within/ no new ideas

Strategically Tomlin has done just fine overall if we are to believe he's had as much control over the defense as people assume he has. Numbers dont lie. If you think someone has done better or can do better I'll wait for you to name them??....which you cant and wont. That being said injuries and bad drafting and the Shazier injury are starting to take their toll more than ever to create the inevitable along with an inept offense that's also stretched him thin.

I was a huge Haley fan, The best we ever had imo...The Offense was setting records and was unstoppable! Arians was getting Ben killed with all the deep throws, and long developing plays, behind a pourous line...

But Ben didn't like Tequila Todd...So that was that

Sorry OP, I have a real hard time listening to discussions from a new member that doesn't know how to spell our city name correctly. First indicator of a troll. Just my thought.

Even if you want to go with 2015 there's nothing to suggest he doesnt know how to run a defense.

failure of defensive game planning and adjustments. cant blame butler if he isnt calling the defenses. i didnt know tomlin stripped those duties from the DC.

I'd rather hear it from the horses mouth personally, but that's me. You seem to be dictating more then anyone else when and when Tomlin didnt have influence on this defense, or what kind of influence he has. That's kinda controlling the narrative to me. What's even worse is that you narrow the analysis to one year...his worse year, rather than his whole body of work as if one season is exemplary of the rest of his work.

That being said, if you want a miracle worker, then Jesus comes to mind...but you know (or you should know as a Steelers fan) that the defense is severely undermanned so adjustments may work (i.e. against Titans)....but the more elite offenses (i.e. the Chiefs) there's only so much that can be done with the level of talent they have.

I don't think things are going to stay the same after this year.

Rooney's plan to make the offense "Run" better didn't happen with the current coaching staff. Currently sitting at dead last before tonight's game.

And our run defense has been just as bad in the 2nd half of the season.

No way Tomlin get to promote from within this time around. He will have to throw his current coaching staff under the bus at the end of the year to keep his job.

Joe Barry, Green Bay defensive coordinator. I do agree the failure of the defense was injuries and issues with Alualu and Tuitt, and then the salary cap decrease which killed the possibility of any depth. The bigger issue is finding better talent or coaching up lesser talent. I believe Tomlin is and can be an effective HC, but he is not a teacher of fundamentals.
