Haven't read about this issues on the board, so I'm bringing them to the table:

Heath Miller had two big gaffes in one game:
Bubbled pass that resulted on an INT
2nd Cotchery TD called back because of him grabbing/holding/interfering on a LB.

Rare coming from Heath, who is usually a safe receiver and a guy who barely commits penalties. Glad he made this on a game we could afford them both.

On the TD play, I guess it was by design. On the other (INT), he probably heard footsepts.
Anyway, let's give him a mulligan. It would have been very costly on a colser game.

VERY unlike his play, but it happened. Heath is stud, no worries. The interception was fluke, just a crazy play.

Nobody felt worse about those two mistakes than Heath, guy is a great player. Definitely the best tight end that I've seen play for the Steelers, has contributed from day one, provides steady leadership, love seeing it when he gets fired up, he's always so calm when interviewed.

He was definitely visably upset on the sidelines after the "interception". I love the guy. Great player, great teammate, seems like a really good guy. All around what you look for in a player, imo.

Heath is the best tight end in the game today...I don't care what anyone says. Even when he makes a mistake it is the best mistake ever! Besides what is this word you speak of "gaffes"? Isn't that some kind of skin disease?

The interception play was awful. He did make a mistake, but it was accompanied by a whole ton of bad luck. The guy drops like one pass per year, and most drops just go straight down, not directly into a defender's hands. That stunk.

The penalty was not his fault. The play was supposed to be a quick pass to Mendenhall, and so he was preparing to block the safety. Ben decided not to throw it to Mendy, and scrambled. Cotchery caught on quickly and got open. Miller did touch the defender, but I wouldn't say he interfered for two reasons:

    1. He didn't really block the guy, he just got right into him as if he was going to block him. The guy didn't fight him, because he could see that it was a pass play still going on, whereas Miller assumed Mendenhall was running with the ball already. It's hard to block a guy that isn't trying to get around you, but instead is trying to cover you. It was a whole lot of nothing going on.

    2. The guy he was "blocking" was not trying to get to Cotchery. Fouts (who proved his senility in other ways during this play and the game) made it seem like it was a pick play, and he blocked Wilson to get Cotchery open. But the guy he was "interfering with" was all too happy to stay right where he was. After all, he had great coverage! And Miller wasn't pushing or grabbing or holding or anything, he just set up with his hands on him, waiting for the guy to make his move. As soon as he tried to move away, Miller let him.

So by the rule of law it might technically be a penalty, because he touched him. But that's all he did, was touch him. He didn't influence him in any way whatsoever, and he only did it because of the play design.

We all know he's still the best. And without the third down conversion he made earlier in the drive, none of those plays happen. He barrelled through Howard when Howard had all the momentum. Miller had no business making that first down, but got it anyway and it resulted in three points. I'd say that makes up for the three points he cost us earlier.

The bobble and pick was certainly unusual for Heath. Everyone has those moments. I'm not worried.

The penalty was a really weak call. I think they were just "tangled". From another angle it might have looked like a block.

I didn't think gaffe was that usual of a word.

After the smash in the head Heath took and managed to hang on to the ball earlier, I am willing to give him a pass

Besides, he was crushed on the sidelines.....

Sorry again. English is not my mother tongue / main language. Where I studied (London) they use it quite a bit!

I remember an Econometrics professor that used to give us a compilation of the "Most common gaffes" all classmates made during their exams on recent years. It was given to us before each evaluation, so we could learn from other people's mistakes of gaffes and didn't commit them on our exams.

I meant to say unusual instead of usual. I see/hear it used more in British English than American, though.

No worries. Gaffe is actually used more often than Speedy might realize. It's just not used very often while talking about football?

Even then, I've seen sportswriters use the word often enough.

As is that. I've had teachers that would be reporting you to the FBI for typing that.

"Gaffe" is common enough in America, but it's usually used in the world of politics and by fancier and/or more uppity people. In sports, we usually hear things more like, "mistake, goof, foul-up, boner, 'pulling a Homer'," or just boingy sound effects.

In any case, Heath only committed one gaffe yesterday, so it should be singular!

You can't say enough about what Miller has meant to our team but it seems like every once in a great while he just seems to have terrible luck at the worst possible times. Remember that game a year or two ago against the Saints where his fumble towards the end of the game pretty much sealed the loss for us ? Clearly fumbling the ball is very uncharacteristic for Heath which almost makes it sting a little more when something like that does happen to him because we simply don't expect it.
