Every single game the announcers talk about the stability of the Steelers as a franchise, how they've only had 3 coaches in the last 50 years, blah blah blah. And how that is such a great thing and a key why the franchise has been so successful.

So my question is simple...are the Steelers valuing stability over success? Meaning, if they weren't so afraid of change (whether be it coaches, GMs, players) might they have more success in terms of playoff wins, Super Bowls, etc?

Since they are as successful as any franchise in the Super Bowl era, I think it is hard to really criticize how they do things overall. Things are going to be less stable over the next few years if that is your thing.

The Steelers place a much higher value on being Politically correct and putting certain demographic checkmarks into their organization than they do towards running their team full speed ahead for greater successes. They were woke before it became a talking point. Now it is time to finally pay the piper.

I wish they would grow a pair and finally fire a coach and his staff. This team is stale and it has to have a mindset change before it will become fresh again.

Right, but let's look at things since 2000...they can't live on Super Bowls won in the 1970s or 1980s forever. It's 2021.

    Patriots have 6.
Steelers have 2 SB wins in the 2000s.
    Baltimore has 2.
    TB has 2.
    Giants have 2.
NO, Seattle, GB, Indy, Philly, Denver and KC all have 1.

So yes, we're in "second place" for SB wins in the 2000s but far behind the Pats. At this rate even without Brady I think the Pats win another SB before we do.

While that may be true they have also squandered many an opportunity. With the talent that they have had in recent years a SB or two could have been easily achieved.

Now, it might be back to the old 80's drawing board.

Wait. We won a SB in the 80's? I know SB XIV was January 20, 1980 off of the 1979 season but beyond that they stunk that whole decade through.

Um, the Steelers won SB XIV in 1980. That's part of the 80s, no? Maybe get your facts straight before you starting calling people ignorant, brother.

Since 2000 what franchises have been more successful? Obviously the Pats but they had Brady. Otherwise I don't see any that are clearly better. People have absurd expectations.

Yes, but 70s would garner more responses imo. "Did you look that date up" could be troubling waters.
You got me factually, I'll concede.

The Pats, with 6 SB wins.

I guess until another team wins SB number 3 since 2000 we should be fine with the current product? I guess that poses the question what are reasonable expectations for the Steelers then? Would you be OK with no playoff wins for the next 10 years? How about no playoff wins for the next 20 or 30 years?

Make the playoffs is the standard currently. Almost no one here is happy about falling this far. Just a few are overjoyed with the situation.

Define success!! Would that be the team with most SB's????? How about the team that has been to the Playoffs more then any other in the NFL during the SB era???????

That was the 1979 season. No one ever says we won a super bowl in the 80’s Benny is up to his antics again.

Umm, no, I wouldn't be. I'm not even satisfied with what they have actually done but I also don't act like what they have done is garbage and that they are one of the worst franchises in the NFL simply because through 3 games they look terrible. It is called having some perspective. The Steelers are clearly a well run franchise that is currently in a down spell. It is the nature of competitive sports.

Pats went 10 years between Super Bowl wins at one stage during that period despite having the greatest QB ever to play the game. Winning Superbowls is hard and the Pats are a total outlier, anybody compared to them is always going to look like a failure.

Steelers have been mostly in the hunt, maybe could have won another one during the 2010’s but plenty of other teams will feel the same way.

We don’t know what is around the corner post Ben. If they can somehow luck their way into a QB they will be fine. I think they’ll continue to scout and draft well after Colbert is gone.

I like Tomlin for the most part but I do think the team needs to embrace analytics more and push the envelope a little more in terms of position coaches and coordinators. Fictner should never have gotten the OC job for example, and they are right at the bottom in terms of spending on coaching. Look at how the Browns went out and got Bill Callahan in 2020 vs the Steelers promoting Sarrett in 2019 and then Klemm in 2021 etc.

We won the Super Bowl for the 2008 season. I don’t think anybody is running around saying we won the 2009 Super Bowl even though that’s the calendar date it was played.

The Pats thing was a fluke so we are basically a top 10 franchise if that means anything. However all those teams mentioned have a shot at the crown before we do at this current status

We need to start winning playoff games for sure. I could argue the Steelers mystique is gone and we are now just an ordinary organization. No one is scared to play us , in fact they can’t wait to play us now.

Not as an excuse for anything, but judgment of teams in the AFC also should have slightly lower expectations, considering the Cheats were on that side of the league. Their abnormal success came at the expense of the rest of the conference.

To me, second-best team in football over the last couple decades doesn’t rate grabbing torches pitchforks.
