Derek Watt signed a 3 year $9,750,000 contract in 2020 and has been named ST's captain this season.
Are the Steelers getting enough return on this investment?

Last week he only played ST's and only had 1 solo tackle if you don't count him lining up in the victory formation.

Last year he had 8 Total Tackles with 5 of those being solo and 3 being assists on ST's. He also added a single 2 point conversion.

If you look over his stats you see a bunch of goose eggs all over the board for his entire career.

To me he is a wasted roster spot and if it weren't for TJ being on the team he probably wouldn't even be on an NFL roster at this point in his career. He is in his 6th year in the NFL as a FB and has 77 games played with 1 TD and a 2 pt. conversion. I know FB is a nostalgic position in the NFL these days but somehow the Steelers really need to get more production from him or simply spend the money better on a different player.

    Thoughts?

So if Derek Watt comes out into an offensive of formation, you must do the following and remove one of the following players

    A.) Chase Claypool
    B.)Dionte Johnson
    C.) Juju Smith Schuster
    D.) Eric Ebron
    E.) Pat Friermuth

Now you see why NFL O-Coordinators don't care about Fullbacks.

Use him more? More than not at all? Sure… If only to justify that bloated contract.

I get what you are saying but that's a hell of a contract just to be riding the pine.

I think we signed him so his Mom doesn't have to wear a Jersey with 3 different teams on it.

Utilization of a fullback requires that Ben be under center for all of those plays. It also requires a traditional rushing attack in which the primary running back follows the designed play as the blocking develops. The problem is that more and more RB's are becoming cut back runners where instead of running the ball between the tackle and guard they see a lane open between the center and left guard and take that. Teams with cut back players tend to show heavy motion in one direction but have the run play specifically designed to go opposite. The Ravens have killed the Steelers for years using this type of running play.

Oddly enough, one of the few times I noticed Watt in the game in Buffalo, Roethlisberger was in the shotgun.

To be fair Big Ben has not been under center, since the Reagan Administration

It's a weird personnel grouping I'm sure you could run split back out of it but typically they like an H-back/TE there where you can motion them right to left or into the backfield but still be an effective pass threat and point of attack blocker. Having Watt in there is almost like having Ebron play only passing downs.

I'd rather have Derek Watt blocking on run plays then Ebron. Not all the time where it's noticeable but at least try it.

Common now, he's the Special Teams Captain! That's why they paid him so much. He is burning the midnight oil studying tape and can't be bothered with any offensive drivel. They need him leading the Special Teams charge! He should come out on a horse, yea that's it...

Tom Brady got all his pointer tips from Einstein first hand. He'll probably still be alive and playing when they colonize Mars. His wife will still be smoking hot and much richer as well.

I don't see Watt getting any offensive reps until Ben steps down.

Right now the Steelers answer to 3rd and 2 is still to have Ben complete a 3 yard pass; and you don't need a FB for that.

Giving him a target or two a game can't hurt, but I haven't been overly impressed with him on offense besides blocking.
