They only gave up one sack last night, and that wasn't really a sack. Dobbs dropped back and then took off running and stepped out of bounds a yard or two behind the line of scrimmage. Officially that is a team sack for the Cowboys.

We finally have a competent qb coach, let's see what he can do. Mason was the 3rd team at year one. Not many reps as the number three. Year two thrown to the wolves 1 1/2 games in. Year three, covid and not a real camp. All three of those without a true full-time at coach. Now we have one. 4 years he's but.......

LOL, Who the hell is Jason??? That is all I could think about...Is there a Jason on this team?

Maybe he meant James, as in James Washington. I don't know why but I just couldn't turn the name Jason into Mason Rudolph.

I want to see Mason turned lose in one of these PreSeason games and be allowed to throw the football down the field multiple times. I know last night was all about introducing Najee Harris to the team and not asking too much of our beat up offensive line, but come on man. Give Mason a few plays to show off his game; play action passes 15- 25 yds down the field.

Jason = Mason....its literally like one letter. Don't know what Mac is using nowadays and don't care but his auto correct is always off.

I know it is just one letter off, but when you say Jason, I don't think of Mason Rudolph.

i think right now they are working on just running this new offense and getting the team familiar with it. this isn't about showcasing anyone's game. we know mason rudolph can throw deep when needed. he showed some of that last year in the browns game. he had one thursday night as well. he also put a perfect pass on claypool which should have been a first down. i'm not sure why people are saying he didn't do well in this game. i think it's mostly they just don't like him. haskins did very little in this game, but still didn't look lost. he by no means outplayed mason or jason though.

heag did look pretty good as did moore. coward and finney looked good as well as our rookie center. so far so good. now to build on it.

one guy that didn't get talked about much was miles killebrew. he had a good game at safety. led the team in tackles and was not out of position on pass plays.

secondary has some players. stiner, killebrew, norwood made depth at this spot a huge plus so far. gilbert, pierre, sutton and haden at corner should be a nice group if it continues. brooks as well didn't look lost, nor did maulet. a good sign so far.

a couple of young receivers also showed a little something.

young yes in most cases but if this type of play continues, the arrow is pointing up. stay tuned. :smiley1::cool:

Yeah, but that off target dump off was inexcusable and WAY off target. What about the fumble/failed handoff or whatever it was? He has to get at least partial blame.

In defense of him I seem to remember when he had to start a game he was a slow starter and tended to improve as the game went along.

I think the argument against him is he has had his chance and is a known quantity. He is at best an average backup and has no upside. He is immobile and I suspect not durable, partly related to his lack of mobility.

He is definitely NOT the heir apparent as you say. He is expendable if Haskins pans out as a viable alternative during this preseason IMO. If Ben goes down long term the season is over anyway. I would be eager to test Haskins upside if I were Tomlin if that happened, not go to Rudolph first.

This. That boot to the 1 was a thing of beauty. Sorry Berry your time is up.

He is making a case for being the #2. Runs hard. Snell might be the odd man out.

I have to disagree Mac, I feel he took a step back with his performance. But it was a only the 1st pre season game so I will reserve further judgement until I see more. He needs the reps for sure.

Haskins should (and I think will) get a chance to show something this preseason and I am glad. That said, he has started 13 games and Mason has started 9 so I am not sure why I should think Mason has shown everything he is but Haskins has some hidden untapped potential. Heck, Mason has better numbers across the board. Better completion percent, better TD%, better INT%, better yards per attempt. I totally get everyone wanting Haskins to beat out Mason (I want it too as it would mean good things for the Steelers) but I want Haskins to actually beat out Mason before we declare him the better QB. To this point he has not been. If anything, Mason has been better.

You're right. And that's scary (not that you're right, but the statement ;)).

Honestly, Haskins didn't have to do a LOT to push Rudolph. The fact that he hasn't distanced himself, in either direction, is scary. All we know at this point, unfortunately, is that neither QB is able to distinguish himself. Sure, there are 3 preseason games to go. But they won't factor significantly in one of those games, and will likely split first-team opportunities in the other game. That means one true shot for each of them to show they want, and deserve, QB2.

I'm not that worried about it. I think these things tend to sort themselves out by the end of the preseason. Plus I am confident that at the very least Rudolph is a competent backup so we won't be in horrible shape regardless. I'm going to let it play out and hope that one of them elevates his play. Heck, if the reports of improved accuracy from Dobbs are true then he has a shot as well. I'll remain skeptical of that as I don't remember a lot of QBs improving accuracy this late in the game but who knows? Outliers exist.

Punting the ball 50 yards to the 1 foot line is meaningless when the defense gives up a 27 yard gainer up the gut and continues to give up 3rd down conversions on the same drive via passes and personal fouls to the tune of 65 yards. I'm excited about the punter but how many times do we have to see those coffin kicks go for not? I know, settle down, it's only preseason, but if you ask me it's been quite predictable over the years.

Settle down, it's only preseason. ;)

I'm worried about that too, actually. But the defense's shortcomings shouldn't diminish the punter's work. It isn't meaningless. Because punts like that don't have an asterisk because it's preseason. Punts like that happen no matter who is starting and no matter where we are in the season. If Najee broke 3 runs for 150 yards in the HOF game, there would have been an asterisk because it wasn't against the week 1 starting lineup. Harvin gets no asterisk.

Maybe it means something but maybe it doesn't but Harvin was holding for Boswell at practice on Saturday and Berry was reduced to holding for Sloman.

I hope harvin only sees the field as a holder. Seriously, longer field, defense on the field longer. Come the 4th qtr. We know they tire out. They better get some stops more often then not.
