You claimed I wasn't using enough statistics to back up my point. Then I proved that I could do exactly that and you had no valid response. You still don't.

    You were comparing first 5
You were comparing 1st 5 starts. No???
I just went back and looked . So yes you were, and Bud Dupree started 5 games his rookie season 2015. No Watt , and Harrison only started one game that year. So:shrug:
    He lined up across from:poopy:
While Highsmith lined up across from should have been DPOY Watt. Big difference. In all said I'm not say Highsmith isn't good . I'm saying you cant compare the first 5 starts .

Production without context is misleading. Let's see how he does with no help on the DL in Tennessee. He's going from best to worst supporting cast, expected to be the savior.

Tennessee is going to have huge buyer's remorse in a few months when they discover Bud suddenly isn't going unblocked half the time.

You can find lots of guys for less than $80M who can get to the QB unblocked and play run defense.

Burying production in context is misleading. That's what you have been doing. You are choosing stats that ignore the ability to close in on the tackle, one of the areas in which Dupree is superior to Highsmith.

There aren't many guys who will create pressure all by themselves. We haven't seen Watt do that, either. He has had guys like Heyward, Tuitt, and Dupree throughout his career. His production slowed once Dupree was hurt. Teams simply didn't show Highsmith the same respect and he didn't make them pay nearly enough. This is where I remind you that even in arguably his best game, playing mostly against a third-string tackle for the Colts, he didn't get even one sack.

Of course, I'm still waiting for you to acknowledge that in your excuse-making for the games Highsmith started, you relied in inaccurate information, such as claiming that Alualu was out when he played in all five of those games.

yes you had me confused on what year you were talking about but yes in buds rookie year, jones only played 41% of the defensive snaps. harrison with only starting 1 game still played 55% of the defensive snaps. more then jarvis jones did. that is all we have to compare highsmith with is the first 5 starts in a rookie year, besides spot play. time will tell.

I was refuting your simpleton math of the D allowing fewer PPG with than without Dupree, I didn't check gameday rosters in each game. You didn't acknowledge that Dupree was on the field for several of their worst D games of the year.

Dupree had 31 tackles in 11 games, Highsmith had 30 in the 5+ games after Dupree got hurt, 48 for the year. Somebody's ignoring the ability to close in and make a tackle.

I guess we’ve gotten to the eternal Bud Dupree debate again. I think there’s no doubt that Dupree stepped up his game the past two seasons, and was a valuable defender for us. But to me the question remains is Bud Batman or just a Robin who looks like a Batman? He’s never achieved anything better than average NFL play without a legit DPOY candidate opposite him, and top tier D linemen in the middle. How much of his pass rush production was made easy by the guys around him? I think that the answer is quite a bit from watching games and the situations that he found himself in routinely. The Titans have gambled a good chunk of dollars on him being able to be Batman, and being the primary focus of the opponent’s pass protection instead of the 3rd or 4th point of focus. Bud has become a very good player, but I’m not sure that he’s Batman, especially when rushing the passer. We’ll see.

I’ll just throw this out there: a few years ago I wanted to trade Bud heading into his option year and sign Shaq Barrett when he was a free agent from Denver. At that time he could have been had for a reasonable long term contract, and had to settle for a 1 year “prove it” deal in Tampa (and boy did he prove it). I didn’t think Bud had it in him to even be average after watching him for 4 years. I was wrong about Bud big time, but could you imagine if we had had Shaq Barrett instead the past couple of seasons and still had him under a reasonable contract?

There’s a reason that I’m mentioning Barrrett other than just patting myself on the back for seeing the potential that the league missed. Barrett came into the league as a guy who had mediocre athletic measurables, yet he turned himself into one of the best edge defenders in the league and a legit DPOY type of player. Highsmith may not have Dupree’s athleticism, but his measurables blow away Barrett’s. If he makes a decent year 1 to year 2 leap, I think he’ll be a capable starter. Really, all he has to do is make that year 1 to year 2 improvement that you expect in a dedicated player, and he’ll be fine.

Good Lord, even the Bud Dupree "highlight reel" from 2020 is a tribute to how often the $80M man went unblocked. In the ten minutes of this film, he was unblocked far more times than he beat his man initially and hit the guy with the ball. Gonna go from 0 to 2 blockers on most plays in Tennessee.

Also some nice hustle/cleanup plays, where initial pressure came from other guys who won't be in Tennessee this season and chased them towards Bud.

I think it will be in the middle closer to boom, top 1/3 easily imo. Front 7 is legit, Safeties are up there, the only question is in regards to the CB rotation. I have all the confidence in Sutton and Haden but that's where it ends.

You tried to refute my accurate math by presenting inaccurate information. It was misleading to bring up the Bush injury because he had already missed six games before Dupree was hurt. The defense gave up an average of 15.7 points per game in those games in which Bush was out, but Dupree played. Tyson Alualu missed all of one of those games, Dallas, and was hurt on the first series against Baltimore. Not only did they lose their nose tackle against a run-heavy opponent, but they were also left extremely thin up front.

You presented false information. Why should we trust any information you post if you don't bother to find out if it is accurate? You claimed that Alualu was absent for those games Highsmith started. He wasn't. He played in all of them. It was while Dupree was in there that Alualu missed time.

Do you really want to question Dupree's ability to close in on a tackle? You're funny.

The Steelers made the right moves with Dupree. They were right to franchise him. He was a huge part of that defense before he blew out his knee. I'm sorry you don't understand that and feel you have to post false information to try to prop up your poor argument.

The Steelers were also right to let Dupree go and move on with Highsmith, not because it doesn't make the team weaker, but because they simply didn't have the cap room to do otherwise.

My "poor argument" is validated by multiple analysts who put more stock in the totality of Dupree's 608 snaps, and not just the 8 where he got sacks (some of them gimmes because he was unblocked).

Wanna bet? Who will have more tackles and sacks -- per game, to account for injury -- in 2021, Highsmith or Dupree?

Of course not, because that isn't the point of disagreement. I've said all along that I expect Dupree to be a disappointment in Tennessee. It is not a good fit for him at all and he is coming off major knee surgery. He may play every game in 2021, but he won't be 100 percent. He also won't have nearly as much help around him on defense as he did with the Steelers.

Highsmith is currently healthy and will be in a better position to succeed. It's funny how you want context to matter until it suits your argument for it to not matter.

What Dupree does after a major knee injury in a system that doesn't fit him as well with a weaker defense around him does not change what he was in 2019 and 2020. I get that some of you can't bring yourself to admit that he grew into an outstanding player after being a bust earlier in his career. That is your loss.

The simple truth is, in this argument, You couldn't even get the most basic facts right. I immediately remembered that Alualu's time out of the lineup was before Dupree was injured and it took me less than a minute to look it up and confirm that you were basing part of your argument on inaccurate information.

Now actually watch that with a critical eye. Look at the second running play he blew in up the backfield. Technically, he was unblocked. None of the Giants touched him, but that was Dupree's explosiveness on display. He just got into the backfield too quickly for the lineman to get to him. Maybe Highsmith can do things like that, but we already saw Dupree do it for years. Then we saw him do it consistently the last two seasons. Wake me up when you actually learn something other than how to regurgitate what PFF tells you without actually thinking about it.

So you agree with me after all? Jesus, you could have saved us both a lot of time.

I didn't "base my argument" on Alualu, stop building that strawman. I based it on his subjectively graded performance, which matches what I saw.

I'm sorry you paid $250 for the jersey, but you can still wear it to games. Heck, he'll probably be back on a one-year prove-it deal in a couple years.

Wrong. The LT and LG double-teamed Alualu, which left him unblocked. The pulling RG had to re-adjust where he was going but he was too late because the LT missed his assignment.

That's the best you can do? I know you lost this argument a long time ago, but if you're going to keep posting, at least try.

You're looking at the wrong play. The one I'm talking about, there was a pulling lineman coming for him, but Dupree was just too quick. Of course, you seem content to keep posting inaccurate information to try to prop up your failing argument.

That's the one I was talking about. The puller was no doubt coming around to clean up any DBs, the LT/LG doubled Alualu, Dupree did a nice job cleaning up the freebie. Reminds me of the goal line play where the Steelers almost did the same thing, leaving Ebron on Chase Young.

What Dupree did was blow past the guy coming to block him to make the play. Given that you couldn't even own up to your screw-up regarding Alualu, I don't expect you to own this one, either.

Dupree will be the biggest bust of the 2021 free agents on new teams, and it has nothing to do with the knee. He won't be running around unblocked, cleaning up plays caused by the pressure of others.

I predict that in 2023 he'll be a free agent, when his dead cap hit drops to a more manageable $9.6M.

I don't think Dupree will have the success he had in the Steelers system but I've been wrong before. I can see Bud maybe earning a probowl in Tennessee though.
You could be right, At that price tag you better be the alpha defender.
