Honestly I'm thinking he makes the team even as a 3rd string. Dobbs will be odd man out.

its going to come down to pre-season performance, you can throw the car wash spiral to guys in shorts all day, that does not mean you are going to make the roster,

hypothetically: Mason has a good start to a preseason game goes 6 for 9 for 68 yrds, Dobbs comes in and goes 9 for 11 for 114 yrds 1 td, and Haskins comes in and goes 4 for 10 48 yrds and an interception , this is a hypothetical, than decisions have to be made, maybe Haskins comes in and puts up good numbers, its going to come down to pre-season performance not the car wash spiral to guys in shorts

Can't say I've ever heard the term car wash spiral.

I don't see how you can watch Haskins and Ben circa 2004 and drop that statement. Ben did look a bit faster, IMO because he appeared more decisive when taking off. Haskins can shift around the pocket well, but looked awkward when running, even on designed plays. This was reported on his scouting reports as well.

But his running isn't going to be what makes or breaks him; like I said, he shifts around the pocket well to extend the play (and, IMHO, looks much more comfortable under pressure than Mason) and has the arm to make any throw. He needs to understand the plays, what the defense is preparing to do, and make the proper reads. A lot easier said than done, but as others have said, he's not costing the Steelers anything of signifigance to find out.

Ah ok. I thought it was some old football term I wasn't familiar with. Sounds like Ben may have made it up.

Hopefully having Canada and QB coach Sullivan around can only help our QB room. The Steelers' development of young QBs has not been good to say the least.

Think it goes something like, can throw a spiral through a car wash without getting wet. Not sure thats a Ben quote, he may have just used it.

Are you suggesting first round QBs don't need to be developed? It took years to develop Bradshaw. Besides Marino, what QB came out of the box ready as a rookie? And even Marino didn't play until week 6.

They all need to be developed but some of them are ready out of the box, Ben was, Herbert from last year. Burrow, too.

The really good ones coming out today seem to be ready right away.

Ready to play, but they will still develop over the years and need coaching. Ben was coddled his first two years, his game grew tremendously over the years. Burrow and Herbert will have to expand their games as defenses catch up to them, and frankly, I wasn't all that impressed with Burrow. Not that he had much help, but if he is to live up to the hype he'll have to be a lot better.

Ben went 14-0 in the regular season as a rookie.

Of course but you can tell who has it and will benefit from being developed.

I know he wasn’t a first rd pick but you can develop Mason for the next 10 years and he won’t advance past a BU QB.

You knew Ben was special as soon as he hit the field. Herbert seems to have it, too. I think Burrows will, too. That team is crap.

He’s still been developed. Last year’s Allen is dramatically better than rookie Allen.

All by himself? Compare and contrast Ben's game in 2004 vs. 2007, or 2009.

This more nuanced argument I agree with - you can tell early on if a guy has it or not.

His development has been obvious over the course of his young career. This is actually an example that proves my point. Had all the tools, coaching and scheme have brought him a long way.

You don't think he developed over the first five years of his career?

It makes you wonder when a former teammate mentions group of friends and his former coach says he does the work and then doesn't, just what was being allowed to go on in Washington and did they attempt to provide a young player who is taking bad advice from friends outside the organization. It seems a lot like Bryant's issues beyond weed, lots of leeches bringing him down.
