That's kind of what they're indicating in this series so far. When you look at the other players available at positions of need, double yikes.

Maybe this season Mason will shock us.

First he needs a fair chance. Not this BS where he gets 2nd team reps and then gets tossed into the fire when Ben falls apart.

I already made a great thread highlighting the disaster that was the 2018 draft. That draft had Tomlins hands all over it. I know a lot more than SteelersDepot that's for sure.

Every backup QB ever only got 2nd team reps. He got 1st team reps all of 2019 and blew.

I guess jeh1856 wanted us to run a 2 QB system with Roethlisberger and Rudolph with some wildcat sprinkled in.

This is not accurate. He would have gotten second team through camp and the first two games. Then he was tossed in.

Im just suggesting the odds of any QB’s success will be much better if they have the first team reps from the get go.

I haven't given up on Mason, but he had ample opportunity for reps in 19. Ben doesn't play more than a handful of snaps in the preseason. The Steelers were well aware of Ben's elbow issues before any of us were. Mason was well prepared to play that year.

I hated the Mason Rudolph pick at the time. I think the jury is still out on whether or not Rudolph will ever be a NFL capable starter. Same can be said for James Washington.

As for Edmunds, that is a horse that has already been beaten to death. He showed some improvement last season. I haven't given up on him either.

The story with Edmunds is simple. He was a bad choice, but he is still a decent player.

Rudolph deserves a full offseason, and season, of knowing he is the starter. Center the offense around his strengths and get the most out of him that you can.

If he's good (which I still think he could be), then we have our QB moving forward and can use draft picks to bolster our lines.

If he's bad, we'll be in a position to draft a better QB.

I actually like MR, think he could consistently lead a team to a winning record surrounded by the right talent and in the right scheme...even Mike Tomczak had an 11-5 record the year he started. That said with Ben taking most (if not every Wed off MR likely has gotten a lot of 1st team reps. and getting thrown in the fire is a part of the b/u's job description..to be ready when called upon. I do not recall MR really getting tossed in the fire much (if any) because Ben fell apart, just due to injury. I honestly do not think the 2019 performances were or are a fair representation of what MR can be or do. The Oline and running game were crap, vanilla O that any D could read, and hardly ever had time for the pass game to develop, was basically a 2nd year rookie. Last year he played in one game and was decent, and you really cannot get much read with as bad as the O line and running game were.

I am not delusional that his skills match some other your QB's, that he has real started material long term, but I do think if given the opportunity he will be far better than some people think.

Sure, but wasn't Ben in the same situation in 2004?

I don't know that it's fair to have the same expectations for a first round QB as you do for a third rounder, let alone a third rounder and a HOFer.

Besides, not everyone is the same. Ben obviously did well without much preparation. Mason may not be built the same way. He may need an entire offseason to get into a groove. The Steelers won't know until they try.

    Absolutely.

I was kind of going along with the post below, which would now be above.

Ben as a #1 pick probably got a lot more first team reps in camp. I would think Rudolph has surpassed that by now. Mostly I’m just thinking along the Lines of changing ships mid stream. The whole offense will be built around Ben since that is the commitment they made. When he goes down Rudolph will come into that offense and not one built to his strengths.

It is what it is because they will start with Ben. And Ben most likely will breakdown at some point.
