    Cowher/Colbert

    Holmes - Hit... SBMVP

    Miller - Hit... Steelers legend

Ben - Hit... Steelers legend and soon to be HoF

Polamalu - Hit... Steelers legend and HoF

    Kendall Simmons - Bust

    Hampton - Hit

    Plax - Hit

    3 home-runs, 3 hits, and only 1 bust.

    Tomlin/Colbert

    Timmons - Hit.

Mendenhall - Tweener. Not 23rd overall quality but he produced. Much like Tomlin cost us a Super Bowl. Hit.

    Hood - Bust.

    Pouncey - Hit. Steelers legend.

Heyward - Steelers legend I guess. If there was ever a player who represented Tomlin it would be Cam. Pro Bowl quality in regular season then out of shape and a ghost come playoff time.

    Decastro - Hit.

    Jarvis Jones - Bust.

    Shazier - Hit.

Dupree - Not sure how you judge this one. Only serviceable last 2 seasons and doesn't resign. Successful project but not suppose to take projects with 22nd pick. Hit.

    Burns - Bust.

Watt - Hit. Legend in making.

    Edmunds - Bust.

    3 home-runs, 6 hits, and 4 bust.

Just a quick breakdown of 1st round picks. Doesn't take into account Tomlin drooling over some horrible DMV player and screwing up the rest of the draft. Like taking Sean Davis over Kevin Byard or McFarland over Tyler Biadasz.

As a statistician I'd say 1 miss out of 7 vs 3 out of 12 are equivalent.

The sample sizes are way too small to make any meaningful conclusions.

Kendall Simmons? I wouldn't call him a bust. Didn't he have issues with severe diabetes? He did start and do a good job for several years, IIRC.

Let's not forget....Cowher/Donahue had 2 busts within 3 years... Jamain Stephens and Troy Edwards.

    You talk about a reach.
    (Not You ^Talking in General)
Troy Edwards was the definition of reach.

Yes, it was so bad of a reach... we had to pass on Pennington and draft Plax. Burress was a good pick, IMO.

What really stings is Jevon Kearse and Anthony (Booger) McFarland were taken right after Edwards.

    Cowher: Drafted Roethlisberger
    Tomlin: Didn't draft Roethlisberger
Checkmate. (Am I doing this sarcastic color thing right?)

Cowher wanted to draft Shawn Andrews. Rooney/Colbert override for Roethlisberger.

Maybe as a statistician for the government. 1 miss out of 7 is equivalent to 3 out of 21.

While technically drafted under Cowher's watch, it was Dan Rooney that brought minds around to drafting Ben. Cowher had Colbert looking at Shawn Andrews.

Ziggy freaking Hood. Finally forgot him and now he's back. Can't remember which game but he had a great start and I jumped on his bandwagon. With a name like that I could see him being a superstar. That **** crashed down in the SB loss to the Packers.

He had injury problems as well. I think his Achilles blew up one time. He seemed to miss a lot of games, but he was a productive player when healthy.

Here are Chuck Noll's 1st Round picks, just for sh!ts and giggles.

1969 4 Joe Greene† DT North Texas HoF Steeler legend and anchor of the famed Steel Curtain, most badass defense, ever. Period.
1970 1 Terry Bradshaw*† QB Louisiana Tech HoF Steeler legend
1971 8 Frank Lewis WR Grambling Solid, productive player. Played 13 years in the NFL for Pittsburgh and Buffalo.
1972 13 Franco Harris† RB Penn State HoF Steeler legend
1973 24 J. T. Thomas DB Florida State Solid pro at pick 24. Made the Pro Bowl in 1976.
1974 21 Lynn Swann† WR USC HoF Steeler legend
1975 26 Dave Brown DB Michigan Great player. Played rookie year for Steelers, then lost to the Seahawks in expansion draft. Still holds several records as a 'Hawk.

1976 28 Bennie Cunningham TE Clemson Solid, productive pro
1977 21 Robin Cole LB New Mexico Great player
1978 22 Ron Johnson DB Eastern Michigan Solid pro
1979 28 Greg Hawthorne RB Baylor I remember they converted him to TE. Also played WR. Ended career with NE. Over reach in Rd.1.
1980 28 Mark Malone QB Arizona State Bust
1981 17 Keith Gary DE Oklahoma Played first two years in the CFL. Played 6 years for Steelers. I remember him trying to unscrew Ken Anderson's head using his face mask. Not a bust, but never lived up to first round status.

1982 12 Walter Abercrombie RB Baylor Bust
1983 21 Gabriel Rivera DE Texas Tech The player they took instead of Dan Marino. I think he would have been Joe Greene Rev 2, but a bad decision cost him the use of his legs. Sad situation.

1984 23 Louis Lipps WR Southern Mississippi Excellent football player on some bad teams. 2-time Pro Bowler.
1985 20 Darryl Sims DE Wisconsin Bust
    1986 9 John Rienstra G Temple Bust
    1987 10 Rod Woodson† DB Purdue Steeler/NFL legend and HoF'er
1988 18 Aaron Jones DE Eastern Kentucky Bust
1989 7 Tim Worley RB Georgia Bust
1989 24 Tom Ricketts OT Pittsburgh [j] Bust
1990 21 Eric Green TE Liberty [k] Good player, couldn't stay in shape. Finished his career with the 'Fins.
1991 15 Huey Richardson DE Florida Worst 1st RD. draft pick for the Steelers at least since the AFL/NFL merger. Yes, worse than Jarvis Jones. I don't think he ever played a down in a regular season game for the Steelers or anyone else.

No way was Kendall Simmona a bust. He is not going to the HOF... but was a solid player.. games played.14,16,16 14, 16, 4..... the only reason he wasn let go was he ruptured his achilles and the fact that Darnell Stapleton played above the line after Simmons was injured.

7 years in Pitt...2 time Super Bowl Champion....I wish I was that big of a bust.

I wouldn't call Edmunds a bust either. He doesn't make make big plays but he's steady enough to be considered starter material. If he'd have been a 3rd round pick he'd have been a steal. A 1st rounder that plays at a lower 2nd round level might be a disappointment but not a bust IMO

I don't hate Tomlin. He's just horrible at evaluating talent and X/O's.

That's a 1st round bust. Then when you factor in Tomlin bias because he was a DMV player makes it even worse.

    Good call.

Cowher supposedly wanted to pick Shaun Andrews in 2004 over Big Ben, he thought they really needed a Tackle

If not for Mr. Rooney speaking up and saying you need to take a QB. I think Colbert agreed, and Big Ben was headed to the Steelers.

Who knows how the last 18 seasons would have turned out.

I remember Cowher being in love with Phillip Rivers. If Rivers had fallen I am convinced he would have been the pick.

Yes I remember several mock drafts of the day taking Rivers.

I still think we win a Super Bowl with Rivers instead of Ben.

Had he ended up in here.

With the pounding Ben took the first ten years? Rivers would have been meat.
