He’s pessimistic. He is by no means always wrong. If I remember correctly two years ago he won the weekly pickem.

I missed the first few seconds of the interview so I missed the name, but a gentleman was being interviewed. He was in the Steelers draft room for more than ten years. He said they pretty much stick to their plan of “acquiring talent”. They believe in their process, and obviously in the long run it has worked. In the first round, regardless of position, they will draft the highest person still left on the board. He said they only deviated from that twice while he was with the Steelers. Maybe Decadtro was one of those. The other I think was when they passed on Rudolph twice. He did say when Rudolph was there in the third, even though they didn’t want a QB, his ranking was too high to pass up.

Since even QB is a need, tonight they will draft BPA, without regard to position.

I wouldn't call it pessimistic. More like realistic. No cap room.... lack of quality depth at key offensive and defensive positions is a recipe for either disaster or mediocrity.

Jenkins tonight first pick, if he falls.
we will settle on Najee, is my bet.

i think he'd be there early 2nd round, so to trade back would be great. He or Etienne, but many mocks have Etienne going to the J-E-T-S. OL, C, RB clearly top 3 needs, should be our top 3 picks.

i am not sure. If a top WR falls, we won't draft him. same thing for DL.

now - to be sure - we have LOTS of needs - but we are going RB or OL with this pick.

I'm sorry, that's bollocks. Artie Burns and Terrell Edmunds weren't the best at their respective positions, let alone on the entire board, when they were reached for. Trading up for Bush was a reach for need, too.

They pick for need in just about every single draft in the first round. DeCastro is actually the counter-example. Hightower was slotted as the Farrior replacement, but DD dropped into the Steelers lap and they couldn't refuse.

And exactly how do you know what the Steelers board looked like then? And how do you know better than a person who was actually sitting in the room looking at their board?

    Thanks Captain Obvious.

The point is that if we are supposedly picking the "best available player" at 24, then trading back is NOT picking the "best available player" at 24. If they're better served to keep the pick at 24, then they keep the pick. If they're better served trading back, then they trade back. THEM doing what's best for them is not in question. What WE think is best for them IS in question.

But again, to hopefully stop the misunderstanding of my question, stating you'll pick the best available player does NOT imply trading back. It implies you pick at 24. But as @thorn058 already explained to me, a viable option to BAP is to hedge a bet that your BAP is going to be available at your next pick, trade back, get more draft capital, and STILL get your BAP.

Steelers are always better than your soothsaying pessimism. It will be hard to accomplish what this team was able to do last year, which none of you boobirds envisioned. I was on the "divisional sweep bandwagon" from the get go last year & see them as the team to beat in the AFCN AGAIN this year.

I can live with that! LOL..I think the first and foremost action on any team (at least with any smarts) would be to calculate their own board, if all of your top players have been taken and it is leaving what you consider a reach, then you have to calculate who you feel will be there at the position you are dropping to. Of course no guarantees, but is the trade and added picks worth that risk. Fact is if the above case was in place I might even consider going down and asking for the 4th 135 and 5th 178. Have no idea the point value, but with 3 4ths and that added 5th you could definitely put yourself in a stronger position to move in day 2 if needed.

Well, if Artie and Edmunds were at the top of their boards in those years, we've got bigger problems. Gil Brandt had them both barely in his top 100, and history has validated his ranking.

Those rankings don’t mean anything. I’d fire my GM if he went by that.

It’s why you see people who are hyped every draft inexplicably fall. Because teams put much more into scouting and making a board than these TV guys.

Obviously teams get it wrong too, but I’m going with their evaluations any time over these national rankings.

Just so I am clear, you are basing your thoughts and opinions on a guy you don’t know and who has not had an inside piece of scouting information in 32 years?

Ok, it’s always good to know where people stand thought wise.

How do you know what info Gil does and does not have? I'm sure he's got hundreds of contacts around the league still.

Again, he was right about those two.

I don’t know what info Gil has. That’s why I wouldn’t quote him. I wouldn’t want to look like I couldn’t think for myself.

You trust your own eval over a guy who's been in the game for 60 years?

    Armchair GMs are awesome sauce.

He’s out of the game for 32 years. More than he was in.

I have done very well in life trusting my own eval. And that is exactly why I have done very well.
