5th year option for Minkah. Is a huge deal for Watt next.

oh yes - may be the highest paid defensive player when he gets the contract - and WELL DESERVED. Ben gone will free up LOTS of $$$. Not sure Minkah is worth the TOP $$ in the league, but a top 5 S contract, 4 year extension - would make sense. Who else do we pay? Tuitt and Heyward is about it. this will be Haden's last year on the books. DeCastro is at the end too.

Fair point, except that he wasn't solid BEFORE Bush went down. What has changed from before Bush went down (Edmunds stunk) to when Bush went down (Edmunds stunk) to when Bush comes back (Edmunds still stinks)?

Our defense would take a big step forward from a good year last year if that is the case. Dare to dream, brother. Dare to dream. :dfense:

Relatively speaking, Ben retiring after 2021 won't free up 'lots' of dollars (they'll still be on the hook for $10m in dead money in '22); the team will easily see more salary freedom when the TV contract and projected attendance revenue re-inflates the cap at the end of the season - early estimates showing gains of $20m per team. The cost savings with Ben alone between 2021 & 22 falls $5m short of that, and that doesn't count what they'll have to re-invest in the QB position - the Steelers currently have none under contract in 2022 (Ben's void year notwithstanding).

That aside, they'll still have the money to re-sign Watt. But with only 27 active players currently on the payroll in 2022, they'll need to map the percentage of total cap they wish to allocate by position/unit to help ensure they have adequate talent levels across the team. These aren't set in stone - a unique talent like Watt can create an overspend on the LB unit that, as another example, younger players performing above the level of their rookie contract help offset - but they help establish baselines. This helps a team narrow down where in the line of, say, current Safety AAVs they are willing to offer in a contract to Minkah (along with other factors like player impact, age, team depth, potential FAs, etc.).

As far as who else they pay, now that there's a COVID-adjusted ceiling from which to estimate the coming years, they can cross it with priority contract renewals/extensions they want to make as well any potential retirements/cuts/etc. that will result in a roster spot needing to be filled, and the associating costs involved. From there they can begin to put shape to the team they'll have over the next 3-5 years. There's going to be some rebuilding involved - if just for sake of the number of spots needing to be filled - but if they lay some good plans, have two strong drafts, and get a little luck on they can reload on the fly without significant downturn.

If they pay him 28 million a year, will he still be a no-show in the playoffs ?

If he asks for 30 million a year, there could be a scenario where they let him walk.

What about Khalil Mack's 2018 appearance in the playoffs?! Was he not worth the $25+ Million at the time of signing?! Is the 2019 version of Aaron Donald not worth it despite Bill Belichick seeing to it that, come hell on high water, Aaron Donald would not be able to do anything?! Impact is only but a part of such an extension. A major part for certain but there are other factors. The most important factor is to how much does T.J. Watt mean to the Front Seven?!

Answer?! A lot.... by a universal margin.

Nobody ever mentions that TJ may want to test FA .

He may think to himself , the Steelers are going to suck for a few years until they find a franchise QB . Watt seems like a guy who wants some rings .And we haven`t shown that since he has been drafted.

Or he could see it as him being the leader of a stalwart defense helps bring home another trophy to the Promised Land.

All this talk about Bush going down...IIRC he didn't stop the LB and wide open receivers running up the seam when he was healthy either!

If not, is JOK in play at 1.24? Smallish for a LB, but a box safety? Minkah patrolling the deep middle and JOK covering everything underneath would be delightful.

JOK really would not be the ideal Terrell replacement despite the fact he has played Safety before. JOK is a DPW (Defensive Personnel Weapon) designed to attack weaknesses within the strengths of formations. Terrell can be moved some but his ideal spot is the traditional box safety with some above average zone coverage skills.

JOK is a Slot CB/SS/ILB/EDGE all wrapped in one. That said, if there is a "reliable" Terrell replacement, Hamsah Nasirildeen, Richie Grant and to a lesser extent in Jevon Holland are ideal picks. However, as I said before, great safety tandems are not easy to come by and, even if a team does have one, are even more difficult to replace.

Hoping here this defense is built around TJ Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Devin Bush.

Iron Cam Heyward also but I wonder how many years he's got in him. Despite that need to have him retire a Steeler.

I think the argument is, do you hamstring your team financially for one player.

When you're talking about a top 10 QB, most teams, and fans, find the sacrifice to be worth it because a top QB's effect on a team is immeasurable.

Let's not forget that edge rushers have a worse batting average than an American League pitcher when it comes to rushing the QB. If your guy is one of the absolute BEST he gets maybe a sack and a hurry/hit on the QB per game.

In my opinion, no player besides QB, because of the uniqueness of the position, is worth more than 18-20 million a year. This isn't basketball, where there's 12 guys to pay and a $110 million salary cap.

Nobody loves Watt more than I do, but you can't pay an edge rusher 20% of the budget.
