Press Conference after his 2nd. preseason game or so..Dobbs made some good scrambles to extend drives after that he seemed to force the throw when he had open running lanes..

Did Tomlin actually say, Dobbs should stop using his legs? Maybe they were just trying to work on his reads and pocket awareness during preseason... I find it hard to believe Tomlin would tell him to stop running and take away one of his biggest assets.

So thay'll keep 4 qbs for camp. One will be attempted to be retained to the practice squad.

Pretty much the Steelers have zero QBs after this year under contract assuming Ben retires.

Mason most likely will be attempted to re-sign for a 1 to 2 year deal.

A QB will be selected in next years draft high most likely not this year as some surmise.

That's exactly what he said.Either he wanted him to protect himself more or develope his passing more , but he did say it and the way he played after that was not as good as when he took what the Defense gave him.. Ben and Dobb's are total opposites in that regard , but the message was clear be more like Ben and use his arm and not his legs ...

Heck who knows maybe that's why he can read coverages better from the sideline ? Just a guess ,but maybe that's what Coach T was going for in a BU QB as Ben couldn't scramble for 15 yards at that point in his career..I have no ideal , but I found it a bit strange to hear when he said it as well..

He was probably signed as a cheap camp arm who knows the playbook already. Not like they opened the bank for him.

thats right, Dobbs is good value, I dont see Haskins overtaking Dobbs, Haskins will get cut and no one will pick him up and optimistically he goes to the practice squad, unless he drops out of the league, who knows- like Haskins Dobbs had a very good college career, the talent difference between the two just is not that vast

resigning Dobbs makes sense because the Steelers see Haskins as a long term fix rather than a guy who is going to compete right out of the gate, Haskins has this year to be mentored by Mason and Dobbs and than next year he could realistically compete

So a Landry Jones-like deal, right?

Oh boy. If they do that it doesn't say a lot for their faith in Mason long term

Given that the team was very receptive to bringing Ben back this yr, and given that they’ll draft a QB next yr (if Ben doesn’t return in 2022) Mason would be an idiot to resign with the Steelers, if gets any kind of offer elsewhere.

If I’m Mason, I’ve been with a team that was quick to start duck over me when it could, was happy to bring back the broken down vet for one more year, grabbed Haskins as soon as it could, brings back Dobbs - the #2 my rookie year. The team talks about their 1st round grade on the guy and his great potential, but doesn’t acts like they believe it.

If I remember correctly he didn't tell him not 2 run.
I believe he said , I'd like 2 see him use his arm more, I already know what we got with his legs , or something 2 that affect. I'd have 2 go back and watch it 2 be sure.

Dobbs didn't have a very good college career. At least not in Football.
Unless he was playing elsewhere ,every week after his Tennessee games.

Dobbs isn’t having a very good pro career either. Four yrs in the league, 17 pass attempts, QB rating of 39. He’s 26, two yrs older than Haskins, a year older than Duck. But hey, you can’t pass on his potential.

True dat, some folks hear others say things and accept it as fact, then spread it. Dobbs was not bad in college, I watched him play in the SEC because his team played mine every year.

With a #1 pick next year, we can get the best of the best!! I overheard Rooney talking with Tomlin and Colbert...the conversation went something like, "Mike, you've had one hell of a run here. Got us a ring. And you know the only way we can let you go is if you screw the pooch. Bringing back Ben with no solid backup almost guarantees that we get the first pick in the next draft. You can't coach for crap, never could. But you're a hell of a cheerleader. Always loved that about you. The players love being able to run all over you as well. It's been a lot of fun. But we just don't feel it is our best interest to put you in a position to ruin a #1 draft pick. So have a great year. Fist pump until you develop tennis elbow. And grab a muffin or a scone on your way out the door."

If Haskins is a "long term fix" for the Steelers then we are in very serious trouble.

I'll put it simply for many fans. The future QB for the Steelers is not yet on the roster and may not be until 2022. Rudolph may be the closest we have to a starter after Ben leaves but he hasn't really proven to be capable of carrying a team on his shoulders which NFL QB's have to do in order to win Championships. Rarely do teams carry QB's to the big game as opposed to QB's being a major factor in getting there. Especially multiple SB appearances. That future QB is not yet on the roster.
