Since the players approved it in the last union contract, it wouldn’t seem that the players are too worried about player safety, either.

With that logic they shouldn’t play at all

They've been holding regular season games in London and Mexico City for sometime now and if I'm not mistaken the 17th game is a means for teams to not lose a home game on their 8 game home slot. ‍♂️

And with that logic let's add 5 regular season games then.

An interesting take from a former player guest hosting on an ESPN show today (did not get the name). Specifically on Torrey Smith's tweet about less practice to keep players fresh, he stated that the practice schedule has become so soft that in fact it may be leading to more injuries. I get the stress on the body of an extra game, and truthfully eliminating a preseason game really will not impact the starters that much as they do not play much in preseason anyway. I am kinda meh about the whole thing, talk about resting starters, increasing game day actives to achieve this. The end result is fans paying for a game want the best on the field, not back ups. I doubt NFL execs really care one way or another..if the bottom line is increased quality if play be damned

Kind of surprised they didn’t make it 2 games instead of this odd number of games. Will be 18 eventually anyway.

Not true. They could possibly have a tie game, then it could be 8-8-1. Tomlin survives again from a losing year....

Yeah that doesn't make sense. Every other sport has an even number of reg season games.

I had concerns with the soft practice schedule when the players union pushed for it hard in the last agreement. It became so bureaucratic with only this many games with pads, can't do this can't do that. It's like they turned practice into the instant replay challenging process in a game. You only get so many in a season so use them wisely. It's stupid.

These games are already looking like teams would be sitting players if the Playoffs are the following week.
So basically the NFL just moved the preseason game to the end of the schedule.

I can see it now, Eagles at Jets, in the rain, Flacco starting for Eagles and 4 people in the stadium.
    Must see tv!

Unless there’s a plan for the 17th game to be somewhere else in schedule.

Would this have any impact on cap, players salaries? Was the cap based on 17 games already or are they going total games (preseason plus regular season) and nothing changes?

I know they’ve been playing games in Mexico, UK. Don’t like it. I don’t think the teams like it. Keep the $ here.

TV revenue will go up 1/16, so the cap will go up.

Plus, teams may cause a slight affect if they don’t normally sell out preseason games. Slightly more revenue from one more regular game. Steelers sell out preseason games at regular value.

I never understood this logic. Why don't we reduce the season down to 8 games in the interest of player safety then? This is a business filled that is played by professionals. If they think 17 games is too much on the player then settle it with a CBA.
