Why is it after a player gets cut from another team then some of the fans want the Steelers to sign them, Shipley, Merriman. These guys aren't healthy or good enough that's why they got cut and no I don't want them on the Steelers.

Really a player only gets cut becuase they suck yeah porter sure did suck when we cut him. He only went on to have 4 more 10+ sacks seasons. Stuff happens injuries happen. do you think if we didnt owe colon so much money even if he was cut he would still be around. Hell harrison was cut how many times how about mclendon.

The more important question is why start a whole new thread about it when you could just reply to the existing referenced thread? :lolol:

Seriously though...not speaking on any specific player, but just because a player gets released somewhere doesn't mean he couldn't perform well in our system. As hurtin' mentioned, there's always guys who get cut who go on and do well somewhere else. I won't deny that I have shook my head a time or two over some of those threads, but hey, it's something to talk about.

Some players are cut because they don't fill the need a team has such as a speed RB when a team already has two of them. Although he had been in Pittsburgh before it can be said that James Harrison was a Raven reject.

:beathorse: Sorry not to beat a dead horse but it just needed to be said. The worst roster move the steelers ever made JOHNNY U

What's worse releasing Johnny U or not drafting Dan Marino?

I say Marino. We would have been unstoppable with our D and running game and him at the helm. Those are the things he never really had.

The Steelers didn't cut Porter he left as a free agent the team thought he was on the downside and didn't offer him a contract.

Lol! Need to check your facts. They cut porter when he still had a year left on his contract if I remember right.

I'm not saying your right or wrong but don't you find it a little ironic when you tell someone to check their facts and finish your sentence with, "If I remember right". Just asking... By the way, Porter was cut to make room for the salary cap. The Steelers did shop him around but, ultimately, they let him, basically, decide where he wanted to go!

Yep, but letting Len Dawson go and not drafting Marino rank right up there also!

It amazes me how short memories are. It drives me insane when I get responses like this when I brought up trading for Colt McCoy. "Why would we want a Browns castoff," well Green Bay is very interested and I think they know what they're doing.

Jerricho Cotchery was a Jets scrub. Mewelde Moore was a Vikings scrub. Byron Leftwhich was a Falcons scrub... James Farrior, Ryan Clark...

The point is just because another team doesn't want a guy anymore doesn't mean he can't contribute to your football team. Don't be so naive.

Don't forget the BUS.....LOL....I agree so many variables, scheme, depth, coaching, timing, locker room, direction, family, friends, and trainers....Just to name a few and is exactly why Tomlin states we will give all guys a thought and see if they could potentially help our Team...As it should be....

You're right PWP, and I don't remember the trade because I was about 8 years old at the time... but I'm sure if it was brought up on this board if it were happening today people would say they want no part in Jerome Bettis... he has an attitude problem.

Bus was traded for, not a scrub cast-off.
    Cotchery was not a scrub.
Moore was a semi-scrub, up to 8-22-2012 as valuable as any of our RB's not named Mendehall, when we picked him up.
OK, Leftwitch was a scrub, but our 3rd stringer.
Farrior was a scrub??? OK, that's just silly
    Same with Clark.
Contrary to some beliefs, we have actually signed some decent free agents, in the past.

Brininging up McCoy's name is silly also. He'd be a back-up in G.B., we have 2 backups at least as good as McCoy will ever be, not to mention Johnson looking decent.
So, why waste time on a backup that is worse than what you have.

There, just thought I'd join the fun!

Have to agree with original post, no need for 'we need to sign old-washed-up-or-never-was guy, or I'll just die' posts.
Some of the (unintended) humurous exceptions people try to come up with are totally priceless.

Also, I might have stole 'I'll just die' from someone's pre-draft post, a couple years ago. :hehehe:

Yinz can laugh at me all you want, but IF we didn`t have Batch, and to a lesser degree, Jerrod Johnson, I would seriously think that we should be involved in the bidding war for Colt McCoy, as a backup.
Decent, quality back-up qb`s are a hard thing to find in the league, right now.
Didj`ya see that kid try to play qb in Green Bay, after Rodgers was done for the night?!?!
They are one qb injury away from being irrelevant!
I would be happy if we kept Charlie, but the front office seems to like Lefty better.
I don`t know what J.J. brings to the table, but he doesn`t look bad.
Colt is what he is... He faced us fearlessly in his first pro start, even tho he lost, and I would say he isn`t a bad backup to have if Ben goes down.
I usually agree, that I don`t want other team`s cast-offs, on our team, but once in a while, I can see the value in thinking about it, most notably, Jerome Bettis, and Ryan Clark, IMO, And wasn`t Kevin Greene a re-tread..., Heck, even Flozelle Adams helped us out at a time of need, even if he wasn`t the best, or a long term solution.
He was better than what we had here.
THAT should always be the question.
    GO STEELERS!!!

Let me clarify by scrubs I mean guys that are oft-injured and can't stay on the field that get cut by their teams. I don't have a problem with the Steelers signing players from other teams if they can help us win.

Yeah, I'm not sure about chasing after Colt but to determine he isn't as good as anything we have here after his short time with the Browns might be a little over the top. I mean we are talking the BROWNS here, talk about not giving the kid much to work with. This is someone that I think would have done a whole lot better somewhere else. I'm not saying pro-bowler or even starter but damn... the Browns! Did I mention it was with the Browns?

I hope we 'scrub it up' with a fullback from someone's scrap heap...

The Redskins let him go in favor of the immortal Adam Archuleta.
