I know that there was a thread discussing Plaxico, and it got me thinking whether it's Plax or a training camp cut elsewhere, this team will need a vet WR. I'm pretty happy with going into the season with Brown, Sanders, and Cotchery starting. I think all 3 are versatile enough to move around the field and create problems for a defense... Especially throwing in our TE's and RB's (and Rainey).

However, Sanders has yet to show he can stay healthy and Cotch is up there in years. If one of those guys gets hurt we're in big trouble. Imagine if Brown were to sustain an injury for a few weeks... Suddenly we're starting Sanders, Cotch, and uhhh... Tony Clemons? Yikes! I've heard Clemons and Maze have shown some flashes but are definitely a couple years away from being reliable targets.

I think at this point the Steelers are going to be pretty patient. They can add a guy later, but the scouts better be out in full force looking for guys who might be cuts. Ideally Wallace comes back, but if he doesn't a vet would be nice.

A week ago I would have said we are loaded at WR....but after hearing the latest comments regarding Wallace and the non-communication, I agree- we may need to add someone. :frustrated:

i think how quick rainey can grasp the wr spot could make a difference. they should be able to use him in different spots as he was at fla. they will have to account for him. with the TE's we have and FB now , i think we should be OK, but the closer we get to the season they will be considering it. we may keep an extra WR on the PS this year compared to other years. we may have 3 on the squad just incase. they will still get to practice and should know the offense. heck my biggest concern is CB right now. with that shoulder of lewis hurt again, we could use a corner in camp .

me too. my worry is him holding on to the ball. i think he likes to put it on the ground from time to time. :praying: he could really mess up game plans for other teams. as i said, who do they cover? the more they have to commit to coverage the less that will be rushing ben. win win.

I love Rainey and think he's going to have a big role in our offense (the way Stefan Logan should have)... but I still don't like him as a full time WR. In packages yes, but we need someone that can be an every down WR in case on injury.

i agree, but as the 4th guy in the rotation, he's a good player for his roles. give these younger guys a shot , it's still early for them. maybe they need to test clemons' eyes. remember johnson when he kept dropping passes years ago, they found out he needed glasses. it takes a receiver time with ben. they have to put in lots of time with him, the young one's haven't had that yet.

Agreed, but it's very wishful thinking to think that a 7th round WR will be ready this season to step in and start (if there's an injury). The young guys may be contributors eventually but to not have someone that's been around when the bullets start flying would be a mistake.

antonio brown rd. 6. as the 5th wr. he's not going to see alot of action anyway. rainey as your 4th gives you all kinds of options and mismatches. all these guys are pretty awesome in the open field with the ball in their hands and make guys miss. brown, sanders, rainey, then that leaves cotchery the wiley vet unattended. i like the mix. i doubt rainey lines up as an every down wr, but if they can make it work, here would be the place. ( kordell, ranedel el ??) there are a couple of guys that have a little nfl expierience here too at wr and they could yet make some noise. not just clemons. i like what we have in young guys this year, we just have to work them in slowly. i do however agree that the closer it gets the more thought that will be given to a FA.

I love Hines but I think he picked a good time to retire (except for the fact that he was released first).

The best FA out there is Plax,he has experience with Ben and the Team...He is also the type of WR that we need ,he has range and is an above average blocker...Plax has also seen a lot of different systems he could pick up the Haley system pretty fast......

IMO they will see what the young guys can do the 1st. couple of preseason games ,if none step up and show they could be a #3 WR if needed then I think we will go after Plax...He had a nice restart last year 616 yards 8 TD'S and 38 First down catches....All of this with Sanchez as his QB....Compare that to the no money kid 1143 yards 8 TD'S and 54 First downs with Big Ben as his QB....

Plax with Ben and Haley would have to do better than he did with the Jets....Add in his 2nd. season back and his production should go up around 20 % IMO....So he might not get the 1000 yards ,but he could get the 10 TD'S and around the 50 First down catches....

This would give us a nice set when we go 5 WR set....A very tough set to defend...Brown the open field beast,Sanders a precise route runner with great open field ability as well,Cotchery the seasoned vet who knows how to get open,Rainey the speed demon with crafty open field ability, and then throw in Plax the seasoned Vet who is big and Strong and has very strong hands....Who would the D double?Which way would they role the coverage?

If I'm not mistaken, Hines is under contract with NBC so that takes him off the table. It never hurts to keep an eye on the waiver wire as we approach the regular season and perhaps sign a late cut down victim who could give us some value.

No! No to Plax. No to any WR vet or not.

We don't need WR help. The NFL has gone pass the last few years and we're gonna destroy that and win #7 with a return to a more balanced attack contolling the clock with a great OL and Running game. Our defense will be better rested and provide us with more turnovers and our Offense will prove Old School is Best School. A Starting FB will trump a need to go 5 wide, EVER again. WR bubble screen, GONE!!

Remember a proven fact, a FB in the flats is ALWAYS open. Here comes ring #7 via one 1st down at a time!

I agree for the most part, but there will be times when we may need to go 5 WR.....There will also be Teams who have a great run D and dare us to spread them out......And a lot of the new system will use 3 WR sets and we must account for injury....We need at least 4 Starter capable WR'S,as of now we only have 3 and need a couple to step up.....

We are stacked at TE so Haley could choose to keep extra TE'S and use them as WR'S??Maybe why Coach T stated that DJ would be going back to TE?

I'm not even talking about 5 wide... I'm talking about our BASE sets. I think some people are missing my point. Some mentioned well Clemons or whoever our 5th WR and won't see the field or Rainey can do it.

My point is we're an injury away from Emmanuel Sanders and Jerrico Cotchery being our starting WR's. I like both those guys but not as our only options. Rainey isn't a WR, he's a RB that can line up out at WR in a few packages.

I agree we need another Vet both because of the injury angle and to be able to use 4 and 5 WR pakages as I stated Plax is the best opion...

Plax would probably be my first choice as well but there are a few other guys out there like Roy Williams, Anthony Gonzales, Mike Williams... And there will always be some training camp cuts, which I think is more likely because it will be later in the preseason, and we'll have a better idea of when Wallace will be back.

    :roflmao: Good one Snack......

But in all seriousness (for cereal) I believe Wallace will be back before the start of the season. It may be wishful thinking, and the fact that i'm about fed up with him and his apparent greed, but there's just too much rumbling from those "in the know" that indicate that he'll sign within two weeks.

No on all three. It's got to be Plex or nothing. He developed into a beast at blocking when he was with the team before and he's the tall receiver Ben's been asking for.

We have Brown,Jerricho and Sanders. At some point Wallace will be on the field. At TE we have Miller and Johnson and after he's brief suspension Wesley. That's alot of weapons for Ben to throw to and I have yet to mention any RB's who also can play in the passing game.

All the vets you've mentioned are not on a team for a reason and let's not even mention their age which means they are slower and more prone to injurys. I'd rather keep our young guns instead of cutting one for a aging vet. No way do I want a training camp reject over anyone we already have.

We will be fine with what we have.
