Had the Steelers not cut Unitas, the 60s would have turned out completely different: Noll probably wouldn't have been hired, and Greene and Bradshaw wouldn't have been drafted in 69 and 70. Thus, no Super Bowl run in the 70s? Sometimes, things happen for a reason.

True enough. Alternatively, Unitas could have struggled with a subpar Steelers and not developed into the player he became. Likewise with Marino: I'm not sure that had Pittsburgh picked him he would have put up quite the numbers he did at Miami.

Surprised no one has mentioned Tyrone Carter. I don't know how he made the 53 man roster.

It sure would be interesting to go back in a Delorean and alter the past and see what would happen. Marino would have been a 1983 draft pick. At the time, Bradshaw had an injured elbow but also a bruised ego. How offended would have Bradshaw been? Who knows. It's quite possible that the 1982 playoff loss would have been his last game, or worse: he might have asked for a trade, sat out all of 1983, and played elsewhere in 1984 for someone else, like Franco did (ugh!). Meanwhile, Marino would have been pressed into action like he was with Miami. That 1983 Steelers team wasn't all that bad. Even with Stoudt at QB, they managed to finish 10-6 and win the division. Might they have made a deeper playoff run with marino? Perhaps. And then they would have been even better in 1984. But the following players likely never would have ended up in Pittsburgh: Dermontti dawson, Rod Woodson, Greg Lloyd. The 80s might have been better, but the post Noll era would have been far different and maybe not for the better.

Mahan was definitely a bad signing....

Jeremy Staat... I remember Scott Shields was another guy that was kind of picked early and never quite caught on.

worst ever? c'mon. stoney is a personal freind, and he was not even close to the worst ever as a player. heck his first two years he was a RB. the guy had a 14 year career in the pros as an udfa. he still holds a couple of steeler records. he's one of the nicest genuine people you'd ever want to meet too. fast as lightning too.

At times Willie Gay but last year he really stood tall and came through with some really good games.

At this point I would go with Limas Sweed. What a complete bust.

Kent Graham was very difficult to witness as well.

If we were talking about single season performances, William Gay's 2009 would have to be in the running.

    Mahan was brutal

Tyrone Carter gave up basically every game breaking touchdown during our '09 collapse

Ricardo Colclough did absolutely nothing except muff punts and give up TDs

As mentioned Sean Mahan, Mitch Berger & Anthony Smith are 3 great choices for this category.

Colclough was a huge disappointment. I remember at that time we had a number of young DBs who were all set to step up and rescue the secondary from the Chad Scott nightmare... then didn't.

That's exactly how I'd describe what Deshea Townsend did.

I wasn't including Townsend in that group, though - he was a bit older, in my mind at least. Townsend is, for me, one of the most underrated Steelers of all time... but that's another thread.

Hmm, I thought Colclough had been drafted earlier than 2004. Alright then, replace Townsend with Ike Taylor :-D

But I know what you mean. He was a huge disappointment, and we would have had a much easier time if he'd panned out. That pick also made the 2004 draft look pretty ugly. We got Ben and Starks, and NO one else. We traded UP for Colclough, and the team that we traded with, Indy, used our pick to take Bob Sanders.

My original vote was gonna go for Tyronne Carter. I'm surprised Ricardo colc. doesn't have more votes.

As bad as some of these guys are I gotta go with MAHAN..........

Jeff H. retired at the last min and the team needed a center and Mahan was supposed to be the BEST FA C available so I understand his signing but but man was manhan manhandled!!!! He just got beat every virtually every play/every game.

I see he's not mentioned but who could forget Dwight "Hands of" Stone. World class speed but couldn't catch a cold if it was thrown his way

People have rightly erased him from their memories.
