    He's more of a SS which is why I never bought into it. Although you could argue he is as much of a hybrid as Sean Davis is. Perhaps the coaching staff were as disappointed in Davis this pre season as we were.

    Well if we are souring on Davis already we have a bigger issue on our hands....our front office has no clue how to evaluate secondary talent which is infuriatingly sad considering our HC was a secondary coach....we need a ball hawking free safety not a in the box guy.....I'm so sick of seeing long passes down the field with no safety in the same zip code...

    So we saved 1M by cutting DJ.

    If we cut Golden I think that's another 1.8M?

    If Mitchell isn't healthy,,put Davis at FS and Ward at SS?

    If Mitchell isn't healthy we are ****ed, because Davis is awful in safety coverage.

    If they are going to do it you have to think it will happen tonight because they are prepping for the Browns and need to get things settled.

    Don't forget to account for the player taking that spot. We don't save 1.8 by cutting DJ.

    DJ 1.02 cap hit becomes .235 in dead space, + keeping Grimble at .540.
    So we really only saved 227k by cutting DJ.

    Tomlin and company are going to have to start coaching their secondary to handle coverage. You aren't going to always be stacked at every position and you have had this issue for 3 years now. Maybe Tomlin needs to get off his ass and start figuring out how to coach his secondary.

    The more I think about it, the more I'd like to acquire Ward. First of all, even with both Mitchell and Davis on the field, Ward allows us to put a legit big nickel package out there (way better than with Golden). Also, let's face it - Davis was lost this preseason, and while I have hope for him being a quality future starter, he's not yet looking like a good current day starter.

    Let's make it happen FO.

    Cockrell, Davis, Allen of a couple years back... Why is there seemingly overnight regression with these kids? That is what I want to know

    Cockrell didn't regress, the defense progressed (more man, less zone). Cockrell is a zone corner.
    Davis didn't regress, he sucked last year. He sucked this preseason. He has lacked progression.

    I've said it once and I will say it again...our head coach, Gm, and db coach...suck at evaluating and developing db's...period.
    I will even go a step further...every since they have split the coaching duties up between two coaches...our bread and butter lber corp, have been underachieving.

    Davis was over drafted, I have stated this numerous times on this site. Not sure what the Steelers saw in him?
    If your looking for player progression, the Steelers don't seem capable of player development at any position

    We've done pretty good at WR over the years too.

    Will give Burns and Davis another year before passing too much critical judgement.
