Steelers should be after the Hoyer types as backups- veterans with game experience.

As long as they stop drafting project QBs I'm good.

LJ will be the backup this year he's earned that position, Hoyer at best is a c level QB that wasnt even drafted and he has failed on 5 teams so far, I dont want him here....

Comments like this crack me up. Fact: Hoyer had a 91.4 QB rating with 19 TDs and only 7 ints as a spot starter in Houston last year. Fact: Hoyer is the only QB in recent Browns history to actually win a significant amount of games (10-6 as a starter there per Steelers Depot).

Nobody is talking about making him a franchise QB. We're talking about a backup QB. There's no way that a credible comparison can even be made that favors Jones over Hoyer in terms of NFL achievements. The last times we saw Jones, he relieved Ben and threw interceptions vs Seattle and Cinci in very limited snaps. Yet, Jones is a superior QB?

As a backup, sure. But if we need him to play any stretch of games >4 we'd be in trouble.

That was the worst game of his 7 year career.... The fumble was from a sack and they kept the pressure on all game,,,,,, the Texans don't have the OL we have or the WRs or running game.

We are talking about a backup. If he has to make more than 3 or 4 starts on the year, the team is screwed anyway. That is the way it goes in the NFL. There are winning QBs and everyone else.

I wouldn't say the season is screwed. They have to keep the ship afloat. We did that with Michael Vick and Landry Jones, that says a lot about the talent on the team, of this past season.

The Kaepernick situation is just mind boggling.

Chip Kelly flamed out in Philly by trying to run his Oregon offense with guys like Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez.
Kaeprnick flamed out in SF because they tried to turn a guy who flourishes in an Oregon-style offense into a pocket passer.
When the stars align and these two are brought together they wanna part ways.
It seems to be the absolutely perfect marriage between player and coach -- both who have struggled because they don't have the right fit between quarterback and system.

Now Denver is coveting Kaep to run Kubiak's offense which, again, doesn't play to his strengths??

i think hoyer is much better
if ben went down for an extended time, i believe hoyer could keep us above 500 ball, not so much with jones
moot point tho. hoyer will get more then we will offer, for sure

Ben missed quite a bit of time last yr. Maybe that's a fluke or maybe we can expect Ben to start missing a few games each season given the beating he's taken over the yrs. A team like this needs an experienced backup QB, a guy who's started some in the NFL to fill in for a few games if Ben gets nicked. I don't Jones is that guy, and yeah I know he filled in well last yr. I'd like a guy with more pedigree than Hoyer, I don't know who else is out there. But given what they've got now, bringing Hoyer would make sense.

I see you 'disagreed' with my suggestion Hoyer is better than anything we have on our depth chart. Was curious to see how much of "hot garbage" Hoyer actually is compared to the rest of the depth chart . . .

    Hoyer is 15-11 as a starter (10-6 in Cle). 38tds 26 ints. 58% completion pctg. 82.2 passer rating. 6.8ypa.

    Gradkowski is 6-14 as a starter. 21 tds, 24 ints. 53% completion pctg. 65.8 passer rating. 4.8ypa.

L Jones is 1-1 as a starter. 3 tds, 4 ints. 58% completion pctg. 77.3 passer rating. 7.1ypa (thanks, Martavis).

As a backup, not only does Hoyer pass the eye test as being a much more competent qb than Grad or Landry, his numbers back it up.

His wheels fell off in one playoff game. Carson Palmer had a similar playoff start last year and I don't see the Cards trying to launch him.

If we got Hoyer, the backup role would have been significantly upgraded.

:applaud: And... Look at the weapons Hoyer had to work with. In Cleveland he had Josh Gordon for 5 games before his incident. In Houston, it was Hopkins or bust. He hasn't played with a variety of options in the passing game like he'd have here.

Cheers for the stats, very interesting.

I agree on Gradkowski, - but I think I've gone on record a fair bit saying that he isn't actually that good. The title 'vet QB' doesn't instantly make him Charlie Batch. And when he has come in for us, he's looked shaky.

Jones doesn't really have the numbers to compare yet, although after all the preseason games etc, it feels like he's played a lot more. I don't think there's too much difference between him and Hoyer; not enough to spend the money we would need to in order to acquire Hoyer.

If we did pick him up, though, then great.

Where is all this Hoyer talk coming from? I mean I saw an article speculating on it on ESPN but has there been any indication that it is a serious consideration? Is this just like the Steven Jackson/ Eric Weddle thing where it is fan hyped to the point of being pissed off once Hoyer signs with another team even though the Steelers were never going to offer him a job.

I'd bet there's interest, but not at the $$ level that a team with no starter would pay to have him waiting in the wings. He was discussed yesterday by Kirwan and Miller in Sirius NFL radio, and they think he can still be a temporary starter for one of those teams, and that it makes sense for him to wait until after the draft to sign somewhere to make sure he doesn't sign, and then have a QB drafted early by the same team.

5 teams cut Hoyer, they didnt even consider keeping him for a backup, anyone who signs him for more than vet mini has a screw loose, he has glaring flaws that makes him a journey man, thats why he only started 1 game his first 4 years in the league, the season he had in texas was nothing special TJ Yates won 2 games as the starter before he was injured, and Mallet won a game, so Hoyer didnt get the texans to the playoffs with a 9-7 record, it was QB by committee that got them there, so hoyer had 5 or 6 wins, the texans knew he wasnt the answer and they knew they didnt want him on their team any longer...

I think it is more of the situation where Hoyer is looking for a job and the Steelers definitely have an opportunity at back up QB. The question is does Hoyer want to come in and compete for the back up job, would he be happy being Ben's backup and be a team player? If he answers yes to those questions along with not asking for a ridiculous contract I would say there would be mutual interest.

As for Kapernick - I can't figure why he is trying to get out of SF. They finally hire a coach that runs an offense suited to his skill set and he wants to leave. There has to be more to the story. Wonder if something went down last year that only the organization knows about. Maybe he and the owner had a falling out or something. It just seems really odd to get rid of a read option QB when the coach will run the read option offense.

I think he would do great here if signed. Also though, he is visiting the Jets today.
