Well, let's be clear: it wasn't a hit. It was a tackle from behind.

Usually, we can just chalk up such injuries to bad luck. And I don't know if Burfict was trying to injure Bell or not. But this much I do know...

    1. Grabbing Bell from behind like that was unnecessary. It appeared Bell was about ready to head out of bounds. Burfict only had to push him out. I am not saying this made the play dirty, just thinking a little about mindset.
    2. If I really wanted to tackle someone "aggressively," the way Burfict did it is the way it would be done. It's the most violent tackle there is (I am not talking about hits; I'm talking tackling). You hop on the runner's back, wrap him up, and then twist him while taking him to the ground--it's like trying to corkscrew the ball carrier into the ground. My guess: a tackle like this results in some sort of injury to the ball carrier a good percentage of the time. And defenders likely know it. Rarely, though, does a linebacker get to an opportunity to apply this tactic. Burfict did. And he took it. Bell was red meat.

Troy literally tackled like this all the time from the a backside diagonal angle. I don't remember Troy injuring a single player, so this is not a high percentage injury tackle. Bell is not Dri Archer out there. The guy was in his first game back in over a year and tackled Bell from behind and there was a freak accident. I seriously witnesses Troy tackling this exact same way his entire career. I think for a tackle, there's a high percentage of actually... Tackling, the ball carrier.

I was one of those people very early on. Once it got close to the draft, I no longer wanted him. Once he went undrafted, then I wanted him again. For a guy with upside like has, it only makes sense to sign him as an UDFA. There's literally no risk as he can be cut at any time. The guy always had a ton of talent, he just had other issues. I'd still take him. He's got a ton of talent

But Troy isn't the size of a linebacker. And I don't think he started by first piling his weight onto the back of the ball carrier.

You're reading way too much into it. It was a freak accident, nothing more. I see those types of tackles every week in the NFL and it rarely results in an injury. Burfict had no way of knowing Bell's leg would get trapped like that.

I agree with this. Unfortunately, Bell is trying to get every inch, which is why he quickly became a fan favorite, but in this instance... Planting his leg like that plus Burfict's weight caused a freak accident. Just a giant "ugh".

And it appears my post has been misinterpreted. All I am saying is that that form of tackle is the most aggressive and prone to injure the ball carrier. That's all.

I agree with you Shaner on the Bell tackle. He was tackled from behind. Happens all the time. Bell is merely having a streak of bad luck. It's a damn shame that he is out again but it's fact of playing football. It's a violent sport and there is always the chance of injury.. These guys go into the game knowing this. It was not a dirty hit nor do I believe he was trying to injure Bell in any way shape or form

    BUMP*

Upon further review I'm not so sure Burificut wasn't trying for an injury. I know the Bell play looked harmless but during the Bengals/cards game last night on the TD pass to Johnson it looked like he tried to have all his weight come down on Johnson legs after he caught the pass and beat Burificut.

That's the whole point of the post. He routinely does the little extra to try to tweak the ball carrier. Once you have that reputation, it stays. You can't tell me he doesn't put extra twists or pulls in at the end when he's caught on tape twisting Cam Newton's ankle way after the play was blown dead. This instance it looked like he was trying to bend him backwards to tweak him, but he was across his legs and that caused the injury.

    Edit:

The way I viewed it was as it was a horse collar but he had his arm up around the neck at the front of the jersey pulling back. The safety hitting him while in that position, probably helped injure him or I'd bet he gets up a little sore.

Well I had the tendency to say ok maybe it was one of those bang bang plays that happens fast in the Bell injury but watching him in the open field clearly beat by Johnson where it is a clear touchdown he appears to dive and put his full weight into Johnson's lower body and if that is the case then I change my mind about the Bell play and say he knew exactly what he was doing and the running off does make sense.

edit: Just watched the video again and it doesn't appear as bad as it did last night but he did try to grab any piece of David Johnson and then dive into the ground in an effort to pull him down or jar him to lose the ball. It looked dangerous to me
