With the way the NFL is going with the rules I would not waste my time with superstars on the defense any more and invest all my money on the offense. I HATE THAT FACT! There is no fear anymore of going across the middle (most hits are flagged), underthrowing it (because the receiver is allowed to mug the defender anyway) and battling the receiver at the line is sketchy because they will call a hold if its against the right team.

Comparing historical passing yards and points:
1984 Marino set the record at 5,084 yards and there were 2 others over 4,000 yards and top 10 rounded out at 3,300 yards. / Offense top at 513 and 4 others above 400 points
1990 top at 4,700 yards, next at 4,000 and top 10 rounded out at 3,000 / Offense top at 428 1 other above 400 points
2000 top at 4,400 yard, two above 4,000 and top 10 rounded out at 3,500 / Offense top 540 3 above 400 points
2005 top at 4,100 yards, 1 above 4,000 and top 10 rounded out at 3,400 / Off total points top at 452 5 others above 4000
2008 top at 5,069 yards, 5 above 4,000 yards and top 10 rounded out at 3,600
2009 top at 4,800 yards, top 10 all above 4,000 yards
2010 top at 4,700 yards, 4 others above 4,000 and top 10 rounded out at 3,700
2011 top at 5,500 yards, 3 others above 5,000 and top 10 all above 4,000!!!!! / Off total points top at 560 3 others above 500

The increase in 2011 is scary and sad

i don't think we have the qb for that. ben improvises, he doesn't take three steps, make quick decisions, and fire bullets.

perhaps we should look to snare the future at qb if we can pick up a quality qb in mid-rounds. i mean, batch, lefty, and dixon's contracts are ALL up now.

brock osweiler, 6'8", arizona state declared early. played under qb guru's noel mazzone's offense. threw for over 4,000yrds as a junior, beat USC, and hung with Oregon. deadly accurate and, at 6'8", extremely mobile. might be a nice 5th-round pickup. especially with ben's injur concerns having to play behind this patchwork o-line.

I'm always up for taking a QB, especially in the later rounds. Never know what you're going to uncover at the most important position in the game.

As far as abandoning the defense, I'm not down with that yet. With all the talk about explosive collegiate spread offenses, the two best teams all season long showcased suffocating defensive and played for the nat'l title. College rules/regulations are much more favorable to the defense, but there is still room for defensive juggernauts in the NFL.

Agreed. And this will be the key. Finding the way to be the balanced team will separate the Steelers to a lone position of dominance... If they dedicate themselves to this goal. Defense is still very much a key factor. They just have to learn how to master playing within the new rules. It can be done.

I agree that we need a decent back-up hopefully somebody thru the draft. Ben's days of playing a full season are over specially with this offensive line. Better start grooming the next qb starting next year. Crystal ball says Ben misses 2-3 games next year.

If we can get him in the 4th rd I'd take Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin

I'd be down with that. He's a little short, but really talented. Plus, he picked up a very pro-friendly offense in basically one month. Smart guy with some skills wouldn't be a bad pick, especially with I think all of our backup QB's without a contract.

i'd love to see markelle martin in the 2nd. we need some speed on defense. we have gotten slow.

oswieler is interesting. i really wouldn't mind kirk cousins though. there are several decent qb's that could be had this year.
