Congratulations on signing DeAngelo Williams, one of the best running backs in NFL history. Top ten all time in talent, though he won't get credit for that because of sharing carries. So take a look and see what you just got! And believe me, he has PLENTY left in the tank. He has only averaged 159 carries a year for 9 years. He is NOT a typical 32 year old back who is over the hill. Still is one of the very fastest backs in the league.

Only DeAngelo Williams and Jim Brown have averaged 5.0 yards per carry over their first 1,000 touches
Only DeAngelo Williams, Jim Brown, Marshall Faulk, and LeRoy Kelly have ever averaged 5.0 per carry three years in a row.
DeAngelo Williams, with 6, trails only Jim Brown and Chris Johnson with touchdowns from over 30 yards out in a season. And they had much more in the way of carries to get 7.
DeAngelo Williams has more runs for over 20 yards as a percentage of overall carries than does Barry Sanders
DeAngelo Williams ranks fourth in NFL history with fewest number of fumbles after 1,500 carries.

From two seasons ago..."the old man still has some speed"...duuuh!

While this is the NFL and not NCAA, note the following:

DWill has more 100 yard rushing games than any other back in NCAA history
DWill ranks 4th in all time NCAA rushing yardage (behind Dayne, Ricky Williams, and I believe Dorsett)
DWill ranks 2nd in all time NCAA all purpose yards

Bottom line-assuming he stays healthy, and I believe he will, enjoy the next two years. DWill will get you to the Super Bowl! I am now officially a Steelers fan!

    Great signing!

Thanks for the great info! I've always like Williams, and I think he's a solid addition. It appears that he will have the opportunity to start early in the year while Bell serves a suspension. After that, it will be good to have a highly capable back like him in the stable so that Bell doesn't need to get quite as many touches as he got last year. I am certainly happy to have him in the black and gold.

Love the signing! It's a typical Steeler signing in that, when it occurs, everybody says "yeah, that makes perfect sense".

Welcome to the Black & Gold Express, Tiger. I've been on board for about 40 years now but there's always room for more. I hope you decide to stick around long after DW is gone. It's not the greatest organization in football, it's the GREATEST ORGANIZATION IN ALL OF SPORT!

The stat that I like the best of all of those is the last one, "DeAngelo Williams ranks fourth in NFL history with fewest number of fumbles after 1,500 carries"

Well, at least he won't complain about getting backup carries.

Seems to be a great pick up but I'm not so sure you will see a big change in workload for Bell, he's a tremendous weapon that you don't want to have off the field too much. I think you'll see Williams touches will be similar to Blounts. He's an insurance policy and occasional breather for Bell.

Should be a big help during Bells suspension for sure.

Williams is a better rounded RB, so that should help him get a few more downs even when Bell is healthy. Assuming we're not forcing plays for Archer.

I hope it does. They ran the legs off of Bell even before they let Blount go. Not justifying what Blount did, but his carries were inexplicably low as the season wore on. I was hoping that they'd use him more. Performance wise, he was certainly deserving of more carries than he got which leads me to believe that there was more to the story. Perhaps some behind the scenes locker room/ attitude problems?

Whatever the case, I hope they utilize Williams a lot more than Blount. And it looks like he may be better suited to be a back up than LB.

Don't be so sure. If TH wastes his time riding the pine like he did with Blount then DeAngelo will be just as frustrated.

I would have rather them go after Gore and split carries almost evenly with Bell but that was more of a dream then ever becoming a reality.

Agree with this. Bell was worked a bit too hard last season, probably because Blount was very one dimensional. I see 125+ touches for Williams this season if he stays healthy.

I agree that Bell was worked a bit too hard after Blount left... I'd argue that his workload was almost perfect when Blount was still getting carries. You don't want to run his wheels off (like the cowboys did to Murray), but taking a threat like Bell off the field for too many snaps would be a mistake. I hope Williams proves to be the type of player for us that I think he will be. He should really help us this season.

Why on earth would you have wanted that?! Take arguably the best RB in the league off the field to split carries with a washed up Frank Gore? Gore could've been a solid runner for us, but I would be pissed if LeVeon is splitting carries with anyone. I'm hoping for about 7-10 touches at most out of our back up RB corps... Anything consistently more than that would be a shame.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them on the field together a few times a game. I don't know if Williams is a threat running routes, but Bell sure is, and having one of them split out wide while keeping a dangerous rushing/receiving threat in the backfield should cause plenty of headaches for opposing defenses.

Hopefully none wasted on Dri Archer or any other flyweight scat-back.

I don't see room for Archer in this offense. Its not like we have only one decent Receiver or Running Back on this team, and we need another guy as a threat.

Why would you take touches away from Brown or Bell?

Archer will need to become a return specialist to make the team.

Really excited for Williams too, he was with Stewart all those years so he must have a lot of mileage left on the tires.

Frank Gore is not washed up anymore than DeAngelo Williams is but who ever is on that back field other than Bell should see much more carries than Blount did last season. TH needs to see to that or Bell will possibly have a very short career.

I just hope he doesn't fill Duce Staley's roll of "dude on sidelines in sweats." 32 year old backs are rarely healthy and productive.

If we brought him in to be a #1, I wouldnt be too keen on this signing but seeing relatively light duty and low mileage for his age, he should hold up. Hopefully.

But I _do_ hope they give Bell less touches, and this dude can stay out of sweats. I would have prefered a mid round rookie - fresh body and legs. Hope this works out.

I think they still draft one, Williams is a stop gap.
