I know you played against the 4th string and current grocery baggers, but here are the keys to the Ferrari.

I'm sure they will give him a good look. We didn't hang on to him all season on the practice squad for nothing. I don't see him setting the world on fire in year 2, but maybe he can provide us good depth and eventually become a pretty good player for us.

Give the guy a real chance? They signed him as an UDFA and kept him involved the entire season on the practice squad. I wish I had that chance. If he was ready to play in a real game this year, they would have brought him up. He is getting a great chance, and it will continue at OTA's. It's up to him to take advantage of the great chance he has been given.

So'oto has been signed, and cut, 6 times by NFL teams. I'm kinda thinking that also counts as a "real" chance.

Exactly what do you call a "real" chance?

Well, using the eyeball test, seeing him use damn near all the techniques an OLB should use (hand slap, swim, bull rush, shoulder dip), while the guys that are dressing are having issues makes you wonder.

Yes, he played against fourth stringers, but the eyeball test said him and So'oto had some chemistry together and they were always around the ball. Sort of like how Black and McCain were. Not saying they're pro-bowlers, but the guys dressing sure aren't right now either.

Didn't he have one or two good songs in the 80's? Seriously, I hope Jones pans out, we could sure use him.

I wouldn't read so much into the fact he stayed on the PS. All that means is that he wasn't deemed ready to take the place of someone else on the active roster.

That means he could be a million miles from ready, or he could be inches, and a good off-season gets him there. We don't know. Like Lizard said, the eyeball test said he had a lot of potential. Hopefully that develops into something.

I've never been as high on So'oto as some, but I also think that success in the NFL is rarely just down to individual talent, and far more down to the pieces all falling into place at the right time - right scheme, right coaches, right team-mates. That's what determines success. So maybe he also surprises us next year.

We that have been following the steelers for a long length of time...realize that we hold on to vets until they have no more in the tank and sometimes longer then that. Developing players behind the starters have come down to the luck of the draw. I don't think Howard Jones would play any worse then Vince Williams,Garvin,Spence (who by the way should be moved to strong safety)or Jarvis Jones. He's more physical, hungry, and around the ball consistently. So'oto fit in for us last season.Harrison was udfa and cut...what's your point?

Can't play any worse than Vince and Spence? I don't know what you are talking about because those two played pretty good and Garvin was primarily ST, I dont think he saw many snaps at all. And JH is a nice story but its not a common occurrence that UDFA's go on to play at a HOF level.

I liked Howard Jones last pre-season, looked good against , lower level players. Hopefully the year on practice squad he got better, if he starts camp well, he might get more reps with upper level guys. It will be a make or break year for him. Hit the weights, and start working out with Harrison.

I'm eager to see what he has. He looks the part physically. He is a big dude with a big frame to get even bigger.

He was crushing it on backs on backers when I went to see camp.

I think HoJo will have a very solid opportunity to earn a roster spot this offseason. It's critical for him to gain strength while maintaining his quickness, and I'm sure the coaches have him on a prescribed offseason training regimen. The potential is there without a doubt, but he's simply not NFL-ready yet, and it may take 2 off seasons to get him fully there. I would not be remotely surprised if he ends up occupying Garvin's ST roster spot next season. I think it's pretty clear at this point that Garvin is a notch short of being a quality NFL LB, and he's had his shot. Garvin has been a solid special teamer for us, but I think HoJo can replace him in that role and be protected on the 53 man roster next season as the 9th LB on the roster.

I think the FO is going to do what they always do...prepare in such a way that OLB is not a NEED come draft day. I look at it like this:

    J. Jones, H. Jones, Lemon...plus Worilds and Moats resigned (or 2 others in free agency) and suddenly we have 5 guys the FO might like. Couple that with 6 guys at ILB and LB becomes a MUCH smaller priority come draft day. No, that does not mean we wouldn't take an OLB, only that we don't HAVE to take an OLB in order to be competitive.

I'm WAY late to the party. I was going to comment that I'm against his signing because then no one ever is to blame.

Re-sign Moats and use another high draft pick on a OLB, hopefully HoJo can contribute next season they might need him if Worilds leaves.

Yup, I think this is pretty accurate. We'll see some more ho-hum signings (at least as us fans are concerned) before the draft just to shore up some positions of need so we aren't forced into a corner come draft day.
