I don't know much about this guy. Looks like he'll be a slot receiver/kick returner though.

He was definitely a playmaker @Kent St
He'll return kicks and probably punts for us. N
Explosive, elusive guy, could be seen only as a slot WR (too small to be a 3rd down back, can't see him picking up a blitz)

Question seems to be: Can a guy only 173lbs can make it as a slot WR in today's NFL?

I wonder if CB & WR will be drafted between rounds 4 and 5... (4th, 5th or 5th compensatory).

At the combine, Archer logged 20 reps on the 225-pound bench press which is the same number that Jarvis Jones had at his pro day. This guy is fun to watch.

I've been on the Archer bandwagon for two years. He is the road runner in cleats. I do admit it may have been a tad early but realistically it was a third round comp. which is basically a early fourth. I think the fact that they are so high on Shamarko they don't regret trading the pick last year. I see this pick as more of a bonus for not overpaying for Wallace also. Sometimes you have to pull the trigger a little sooner than you want to based on the talent that remains at a position you covet. Now if only the Steelers agree to the " jersey guarantee" like the Pats . I'm gonna go order my Archer jersey.....

We drafted a guy that Antonio Brown can call "Tiny". We've got holes all over the place and we're drafting gadget players in the 3rd round. Has anyone told Kevin Colbert that the NFL is de-emphasizing kickoffs and that this kid hasn't returned a punt since high school?

This is the kind of pick that drives me nuts.

I like the player.. I just thought it was a round or two too early. But hey, Dexter McCluster was drafted in the 3rd, so t here's your blueprint. McCluster was also decent under Todd Haley.

What can we hope out of Dri Archer? I think he tops out as a 400 rushing yard & 500 receiving yard with 5 TDs type of guy. He'll also contribute as a return man.

I would have preferred to go elsewhere, but if Haley can make this pick work, it will be a good one. At a minimum, Archer should be fun to watch. I'm just a bit soured after the failed Chris Rainey experiment.

Hate the pick here. Sure he's fast but so was Rainey, howling's,logan etc... These guys never Pan out at the NFL level unless you get really lucky. 3rd round is not place to rely on luck. His tape looks impressive, but look who they were playing against. Just rather them have picked a position that would have potentially seen the field more.

I'm not big fan of this pick. It feels like we're looking for a Dexter McCluster clone and the odds are stacked against him having any real long term impact. I would have preferred a more traditional rb as opposed to a gadget guy.

I just watched all 8 Dri Archer games on the Draft Breakdown site. I had not had the time to see anything but highlights of him before the draft, and he was not on my radar. Here are my impressions.

    Positives:
    - Surprisingly, he is effective as an inside runner. He obviously isn't a power runner, but he shows decisiveness, vision and exceptional acceleration into the hole. In Kent's game against Rutgers in 2012 (when Rutgers was ranked #15), he was used on a handful of inside run plays in the 4th quarter while Kent ran down the clock with a lead. He repeatedly gashed the Rutgers defense for 3-10 yard gains by finding the open crease and hitting it a step sooner than a typical bigger back would. In the 8 games that I watched, effective inside running was the #1 positive theme.
    - He is almost always moving forward, even when he's making lateral moves. It can be so frustrating watching speed guys try to outrun people to the sideline to avoid contact when there are lanes to be had. Archer does not do that. As soon as he sees a lane that allows him to go north-south, he hits it decisively.
    - He should be really effective in a ZBS because he likes to find that crease and hit it decisively.
    - He is effective catching the ball and turning upfield for big yardage on short range "move" passes like underneath crossing screens and shallow crosses, but is at his best catching the ball on the move.
    - His ball security in the 8 games that I watched was decent. I had seen that his writeup on NFL.com questioned his ball security, and on the 2nd play of the 1st game that I watched, he fumbled. That was the last fumble that I saw for those 8 games. Granted, the tapes on Draft Breakdown are cut up, so who knows what may have been missing.

    Negatives:
    - He looks flat out horrid catching passes more than 10-15 yards downfield. I mean, simply awful. I didn't count, but his drop rate on catchable passes longer than 10 yards in those games had to be 50%.
    - The way that he struggles to catch long passes puts a bit of fear into me when thinking of him as a punt returner. Punts tend to be harder to track than kickoffs, and well... I need to see more before I'd put him back there.
    - While he's quick, he doesn't quite have the cutting ability in space of guys like Austin and Cooks. His evasion moves are much better when he is already up to speed. If he catches a bubble screen, he's not going to make the first guy miss the way you'd expect from a super quick guy. That's why I mentioned above that he really needs to catch the ball on moving routes, not stop routes.

Overall: I am not really thrilled with the pick at #97, but I'm not going to rail against it. If he's used the right way, he will impact in a positive way. However, until he gets some good "hands" coaching, the right way for him to impact will be a a change of pace runner. He is that surprising good as a running back, and that surprisingly.... questionable as a receiver. I am pretty certain that he will occupy an RB roster spot, not a WR roster spot. I think he'll be our designated kickoff returner (which is a good thing to take off of AB's hands). I don't see him as our punt returner in 2014 - too much of a turnover waiting to happen in that role IMO.

Thought I remember you pimpin him.

I like the player too. I'm just hoping he will be used enough to warrant a 3rd round selection. Can we get this guy 10 touches per game on the offense?

5 TDs is probably too much to hope for. McCluster has 6 career TDs rushing/receiving ... and another 3 on punt returns.

    Good break down, Elvis.

My first reaction to the pick was "are you kidding", but if he can avoid injury, I'm pretty sure he will be a good weapon, my biggest fear is him staying on the field, I feel the same way about these guys as I do slight QB's that like to run. The big boys are going to put a hurting on them.

Little speedy guys seem to have a unique ability to stay on the field. Sproles and Chris Johnson have proven fairly durable. Hopefully Archer can do the same. If the FO really likes this kid to take him in the third, then I hope they utilize his talents versus stashing him on the bench. Haley needs to have a lot of two back sets to keep defenses guessing. And I much prefer a RB screen versus those antiquated WR screens that NEVER work.

Is there a chance that Archer becomes a Slot WR instead of a running back, or is he jack of all trades type player, Special teams of course, 3rd down back, slot WR

I think the trick will be finding ways to get him the ball.

Can he hold up and withstand this NFL? We'll find out but not sure how you can "hate" a pick like this. Dynamic exciting potential, not my pick but hate?

    Positives

    • Incredible speed, has an extra gear. Posted the second fastest 40-yard dash time in NFL Scouting Combine history.
    • Exceptional lateral agility, changes direction well. Displays impressive footwork and body awareness.
    • Very quick to bounce outside and can be lethal once he has rounded the corner. Isolates and beats defenders in space.
    • Demonstrates vision to find cutback lanes, helping him to break off huge chunks of yardage.
    • Combines quickness with quick decision-making, a creative runner.
    • Has the speed to threaten vertically as a receiver.
    • Speed and elusiveness allows him to gain yardage after the catch.
    • Can make defenders miss in the open field, showing plenty of wiggle.
    • Light, nimble feet to side-step defenders.
    • Possesses a low center of gravity, slips tackles.
    • Lines up in the slot and releases quickly from the line of scrimmage.
    • Explosive kick return ability, returned three kicks for touchdowns as a junior.
    • Shows some toughness and grit despite lack of ideal size, will run between the tackles decisively.
    • Very versatile with the ability to line up in several spots in the formation, his presence forces opponents to cover the entire field.
    • Surprisingly strong, bench pressed 225 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine.
    • Averaged nine yards per carry in his extremely productive junior season.

    Negatives

    • Undersized at just 5’7 3/8”, 173 pounds, lacking height and the bulk to withstand NFL punishment. Is fairly narrow and does not have much growth potential.
    • Lacks power to grind out tough yardage between the tackles.
    • Average balance, broke some tackles in college but will face stronger, faster defenders at the next level.
    • Ball security is a concern, is very fumble prone.
    • Suffers from concentration drops and is a body-catcher.
    • Limited catch radius, does not make catches outside his frame look easy.
    • Occasionally bites off more than he can chew, losing yardage in an attempt to create something spectacular.
    • Small hands measuring only 8 7/8” may be a liability.
    • Can be easily overpowered in pass protection and technique is poor. Drops his eyes and lunges at pass-rushers’ feet.
    • Was limited by injuries as a senior and may have long-term durability issues to lack of size.
    • A difficult projection. May not be big or powerful enough to earn a significant role in the backfield and could lack the natural catching ability to be an effective slot receiver.
