An inept offense due to inept playcalling is really what did this team in.

The screen pass by the 9er's which gained 21 yards is the type of call the STEELERS O should've been calling. Why in the world do they insist on Ben throwing the ball 40-50 times a game??? Ben should not even have played last night. When I heard that he had not practiced all week except for on Saturday, and that they were doing everything possible to have him ready, I knew then that he would not play well. Even when healthy Ben will make errant throws. So what did they think would happen if he's playing hurt? He was more of a liability and should have been PULLED after the 2nd INT. As soon as he threw the first INT, I knew we were in trouble. If a hurt and gimpy Ben gives us our best chance to win, then isn't it high time that they start investing in more reliable BU QBs??? I actually would've preferred Batch starting over Ben. He couldn't have done any worse and with Batch in, Arians tends to call more running plays and less passing plays.

Like I've stated before, this is the time of season when you want to be RUNNING THE BALL effectively. Unfortunately, as long as Arians is the OC, this strategy will no longer exist in the Steelers' offensive gameplan.

Mendenhall was running the ball pretty effectively. There was no need for all of that throwing. Cowher would have NEVER allowed all that passing, especially with an injured QB who was totally out of sync and over and underthrowing his receivers.
And Cowher would not have employed Arians as his OC or any OC that didn't share his philosophy of a run-oriented, physical, ball-control offense either. Hence why he and Ben did not get along (that's why Ben loves Arians).

Like Mill said. No gameplan to counter the 9er's D. No screens, no play-actions, no roll-outs, no reverses. Hell, I'm surprised that he didn't call his infamous WR bubblescreen......or maybe he did after I had gone to bed!

I also heard Mike Tirico say that Ben and Tomlin talked Arians out of retiring after last season. Can you believe that? Tomlin actually WANTED him back. Like I said, the fact that Tomlin allows Arians' putrid playcalling season after season only goes to show that he agrees with Arians' offensive philosophy......that's scary.

As far as Arians goes, I think the lock out had a lot to do with Tomlin's decision to bring him back. Ben just enjoys the freedom BA gives him.

As for Cowher, I wouldn't say never since he turned to the passing offense with Mularky (sp) and Tommy Gun, starting Fast Willie over the Bus. So Cowher did get away from the power running for a season.
