How many CBs have they drafted in the first two rounds where you generally find the top ones?

You're right. The contract wouldn't have set the Steelers back. His performance would have.

I doubt he would sign the franchise tag two years in a row, he would probably demand a trade while he's still in his prime and this is his first chance to get paid.

They lost the player they wanted to keep. They did it in a way that was a bad look among players. It would be worse this time because a cornerback is a lot more likely to have some longevity than a running back.

I'm not sure who that Kahn guy is, but Khan's negotiating position is worse because he waited so long to make an offer.

You are assuming his play would have dropped off as much without taking the year off. That is, at best, a dubious assumption.

Part of the problem with AB back then there was talk his contract was out of guaranteed money, and he was jealous of the attention JuJu was getting along with the team voting JuJu MVP.

We were supposed to keep Pickens who was destroying the locker room but not racing to over pay JPJr is wrong because it will destroy the locker room

This of course makes no sense

The Steelers have been signing vets to fair extensions and the locker room sees this but not over paying one player is somehow going to destroy the locker room room

    This makes even less sense

I can’t dumb it down anymore for those who can’t comprehend

Anyone who doesn’t or can’t comprehend just put your hand up

I also think he had been talking about Ben's declining accuracy (re: bad wifi) for a couple seasons.

I think he didn't feel wanted, and he thought / saw that the ship was sinking. So he engineered his exit.

Then spent a week or so with the Raiders before he broke their HC. Then got his way to Brady.

You are way over estimating AB’s ability to think

If you need help with math, let me know.

My bad. I thought he was still 25.

That said, I was going with the argument that he won't play on the second tag. I think that could turn into another Bell situation. If you need help keeping up with the arguments, please let me know.

You mean you’re ever changing arguments as you move the goal posts? Ok I’ll keep that in mind.

Good thing you don’t teach math.

Not a reach at all. Bell was clearly about the money. Didn't seem to break his heart taking a year off. Once he got the money he coasted.

This is why I am thinking JPJ may just want to sign a 3-year contract. If his new contract is 4 or 5 years that puts him into his 30s for his next contract.

I still like my original idea of the Steelers signing Joey to a 5 year $150 million contract. $30 million per year will not seem like much in 5 years, and then Joey can say he signed the largest CB contract in history. WINNER-WINNER

Steelers made an offer for four years 115 million and it was re-parted they
i read that the Steelers offered him a four year 115 million dollar deal and he declined it. Now I don’t know wat he garuntee are. The yearly value would be 28.75. Million which isn’t bad. The reporter listed the, being far apart still. Im betting JPJ probably wants 30 million per year with 3 years guaranteed.

My argument regarding Harris never changed. I did add detail about Porter when others claimed that there would be no consequence for the Steelers if they don't sign him. That was a reasonable response to a new aspect of the discussion, not a moved goalposts. In both cases, your characterization of my argument is inaccurate.

And yes, it is a very good thing I don't teach math. I actually reminded a group of my students of that fact about 15 minutes ago.

It's a good thing you don't teach English. One key lesson is the importance of presenting arguments accurately, your own and those of others.

Once he got the money, he had been out of football for an entire year. He also went from a good team with real leaders and a quality coach to one of the worst franchises in the NFL, which was coached by Adam Gase. Do I need to explain the difference to you?

That's what many of us have been arguing from the beginning, yet people are still saying the team shouldn't sign him unless he signs for well below market value.

They can sign him to big number now, get the entire prime of career, have control of him for 5-6 years, and laugh at having a terrific cornerback locked up when the highest paid corners are making close to $50 million and they can still trade him for compensation if they decide that is what's best later.

...Or...they can try franchising him for 2 seasons, piss him off, and then watch him walk away as a free agent still in his prime and get nothing in return for one of their best draft picks in years.

Here's the thing. How can the Steelers pay Metcalf $30 million dollars a year and not take care of Porter?

Porter is a better cornerback than Metcalf is a wide receiver. Porter is younger, better, and has more good football ahead of him while having zero off or on-field baggage to deal with.

Those of you that say this stuff doesn't affect a locker room must have never been in locker rooms in high-level sports. The egos are enormous, and there is also a business brotherhood. Every single player in that locker room knows almost exactly what every player on the roster makes. They also know how good each player is and what they are worth. They talk to each other about this stuff all the time. They also usually only get one contract over their entire professional lives to make 80% of their career earnings.

It is naive to think how a player is treated by the organization they play for and negotiate with has no impact on a locker room or who they may want to play for in the future.

I see the old man is now falsely claiming that Pickens was destroying the locker room again.

Do you know what they mean by 4 year offer? Do they mean 4 year extension? Or 3 years total (current year + 3 year extension). Is there a link for this? My guess is that it's a made up number...as we can see it's lower that what Porter should expect to be basically the minimum to sign for (which I've tried to estimate below).

At that number, I think it has to be a 4 year extension (4 years total)...but at a pretty big underpayment. If it's a 3 year extension, he'd have signed this in a second because it would be a massive over-payment in the first non-controlled year (year 3 of the extension)

We know what the numbers in the first three years looks like.

    Cost controlled years:
    1. ~ $4mm current year <- Already under contract, he doesn't get to replace this with market value
    2. ~ $24mm tag (I think this is the estimate for a CB tag next year...may have changed after Gonzales?) <-- 1st year of extension
    3. ~ $28.8mm tag 2 (minimum. Tag + 20% by CBA). <-- 2nd year of extension
Non-cost controlled years. If we're willing to put that second tag on him, the minimum value he should probably accept for his next two years would probably be something like +10%, which is cap inflation:
    1. ~$31.7mm minimum <-- 3rd year of extension
    2. ~$34.8mm minimum <-- 4th year of extension

Add all that up and you get $123.3MM. (or ~$30.8MM new money average). I think this is the lowest possible amount you can get to reasonably on Porter for a 4-year extension.

So my guess is that the 4 year extension @ $115mm is a made up number because it's lower than what you'd think the minimum value would be (current year, tag1, tag2, keep up with cap inflation in the last 2 years).

If the offer is real, I think it suggests that the team doesn't think it would be worth it to tag him next year (especially not the year after).

If the number you have if real, it's pretty clear to see why Porter's team would reject it out of hand.

I've done these kind of basic calculations a few times over the off-season.

I've also said many times that people saying that a $30MM+ contract is too much because we can tag him don't realize that the tags are already built into the offer.

Here's another example of some math that gets us to a reasonable number.

Porter's team will likely be arguing that the 1st non cost-controlled year should be worth more than 10% above the 2nd tag. Because at that point he could test UFA. And the UFA value for a high end QB will probably (almost certainly?) be more than this number by then.

If that is the reality of all of this then the Steelers don’t value JPJ like a true number 1 cb. I don’t know what their thought process is. He is young, very productive and I thought a key building piece. It doesn’t make sense to me unless they see Dayton Everette really being the future and they want draft capital for next year.
