Not just the middle of the field, we actually used slants again. I don't remember seeing many of those for a few seasons.

Just think if they could get TE's involved?

The X Coach stated he did not like throwing in the middle ..The new Coach has stated you better be able to run a slant route..By attacking that middle it forces Defenses to help in that area and creates space for the outside the numbers routes..It also opens up running lanes inside and out forcing LB'S and Safeties to be responsible for coverage over that same middle...

We had a saying every time we put a game plan together..How do we make them Defend every blade of grass , as such each week the first set of plays we put in had options to attack the entire field ..

So you're saying Tomlin did not like attacking every blade of grass:smiley1:

I like what I have seen with McCarthy, the new OC and the young QB's.

The weak armed QB's ( Pickett ) do not like throwing over the middle mid range or deep.

Yep Mike was scared .He was playing the keep it close game . He was a don't try to win until late, play mistake free Football ..MM is much smarter and way more aggressive than Tomlin .. He don't mind a mistake early if the Offense can make up for it by scoring TD'S and then playing clean late in the half and late in the game..

Coach T was also a do what we do guy and never looked for a weakness in Defenses each week,,,MM will test players and Coaches ..If the Defender is young or banged up he will test him.. If a scheme seems to have a weak area on film he will test it..This is why him and AR are so hard on knowing the schemes and looks the Defense is in on each play ,, they desire to get out of bad plays and into good ones and if the skill guys don't know the right answers they wont get to play..

I don't think it was "fear". I think it was a reflection of the offensive talent (or lack there of) on the team.

And while this system was very, very boring (especially Canada / Kenny)...I think we ended up winning more games than we "should have" because of it.

I'm looking forward to the changes on both sides of the ball this year. Maybe we aren't "guaranteed" to get 9 or 10 wins. But I bet the football will be more entertaining.

Not just weak armed...inaccurate. It's not a great idea to throw to the highest density of defenders if you can't put the ball "on target".

I just think it is Tomlins risk adverse style, dont make mistakes, let the other team beat themselves, make splash plays, win tight contests at the end.

If Rodgers throws there a lot more this season thats a pretty big indictment of the last coaching staff.

I think this is certainly how we played most of the time after Ben got hurt. I would argue that QB accuracy was a pretty significant issue from Ben's injury until at least bringing Rodgers in last year. But we clawed our way back to about an average offense over the last two seasons (when we had our best QB play since at least Ben retiring).

But I don't think it was how we played when we had good offensive talent (e.g. BBB era).

I agree that it will be really interesting to see the difference in style and results this year. It's only a one year sample size with Rodgers (for both groups). So I don't think it will tell us anything definitive either way. But it will still be cool to see. Especially after having the same coach almost 2 decades.

It was a proven formula, IN THE REGULAR SEASON. And it was a proven LOSING formula in the post-season. Tomlin never figured out how to hone the offense to change gears in the post-season. He seemed to take the same formula to the playoffs and got humiliated into submission every time for a decade.

Contrast that with 2005 Roethlisberger-led offense, where in those 3 playoff games, he came out guns-a-blazin' to the point where those teams didn't know what hit them by half time. Sure, we haven't had Big Ben in a while, but you can't play safe-ball in the playoffs unless you have an all-world defense, which we also haven't had in a very long time.

This. We threw plenty to the middle of the field when Ben was in his prime, and I guess people forgot that Tomlin was the HC then.
What you don't do is ask your Qb to do things he sucks at.

I swear people either just say things to say them, or just don't know what the hell they are talking about.
We threw to the middle of the field plenty when Ben was in his prime, and guess who the HC was?? Also Guess who the HC was many years when we were in the top 10 , and higher in scoring? You people make me laugh.
You don't ask a Kenny Pickett to do what You ask Ben to do. You can't say a HC needs to cater to the talent he has, and then turn around, and say, why doesn't he make this guy do the same as this guy. LoL
You don't ask Qbs that aren't good at it to do it a lot.
Also. You can have routes to the middle of the field all day long, and if the Qb doesn't throw there, they don't throw there.
Ask yourself, when Trubisky was the Qb here, where did he throw his most ints??
So stop this made up stuff.

Except Pickett did a great deal of his damage throwing over the middle at Pitt. He also had some of his best plays as a Steeler there. This was a pattern that went on before and after Pickett, regardless of who was at quarterback.

What's this "middle of the field" you're talking about.

As a Steelers fan, I only know the field to be like this:

Many posters have said that the Steelers haven’t used the middle of the field for passing. Now this chart very much tells a completely different story. 2024 for Wilson was even more middle populated. Even Mitch and Kenny the Coward was similar. Am I missing something or is this just people making crap up? Now I will also ask why so many passes were behind the line of scrimmage?

The huge amount of passes behind the line of scrimmage is the most concerning thing for me over the last several years.

It does feel like they don't use the middle of the field as much as other teams sometimes, though. Data may show differently.

i would guess McCarthy and his guys are better at assessing the talent on offense than Tomlin and his team were. And able to get more out of them, just a guess.
