I get it.

 

Now you have me thinking about it and I never played team sports. Table Tennis (Ping Pong) (I got trophies) and Golf.

We have a local old man softball league that is so funny to watch. Have to be over 65. Most the time it's more laughter and Beer then softball.

 

That bum L.C. Greenwood came from some funky college in Arkansas How the Steelers found him I'll never understand.

 

I grew up outside of Toronto. It wasn't a main stream sport, but most of the local high schools had it. I don't think our athletic department was particularly thrilled about it though. In Canada, most coaches in HS are teachers...but we had guys from outside the school come in and coach us.

I played from 9th grade. Mostly because my brother (2 years older) also played. Our parents wouldn't let us play rugby and football, so we had to choose. Probably would have been OL / DL in HS, and picked rugby because I wanted to have the chance to touch the ball.

We were a pretty good team. Finished 4th in the province (like a state) one year.

One of the guys I knew made the provincial team (for Ontario...BC the best province and where the national team would train). I think I was probably about as good as he was...but he was more aggressive / violent. I took a summer job in a research lab at one of the nearby universities, so I didn't try out. Ended up as a professor, so it was probably a good call...but I always wonder if I would have been good enough to make the team.

When I was a jr (or at least kind of the equivalent in Canada at the time...which is weird because we had 5 years in HS instead of 4), we did a 2 week trip to play against teams in Britain. Lost every game, but it was incredibly fun. It was the end of their season and all our grass was covered in snow...at least that's the excuse we gave for going 0/4 in those games. But the experience was cool. Played in a couple little towns where the pub at the rugby club was one of the main places for social gatherings. And we were old enough to drink there...which was pretty cool for a HS kid (drinking age is 19 in Canada...but I wasn't old enough to drink at home yet).

Then, when I was a Sr, we hosted a Scottish team. I matched up against a guy who was on their U19 national team and held my own reasonably well. In general, I think we tended to be bigger than they were. But they were more skilled (since they'd been playing from a younger age).

Then, I got fat. Still have kind of a base level of fitness, so I can do stuff like run a 5k with my kids. But should really drop 30 lbs or so (at least).

 

Are we actively using the Courtier's Reply Fallacy to disparage other peoples abilities to discuss aspects like the NFL yet again?! Ryan Clark was notorious for this during his time with ESPN. Dude finally got the axe; someone who was long overdue it.
