It's clear Tomlin was liked as a father-figure, someone who cared about players. Unfortunately, that clouded players minds, and they're finally seeing how they underperformed as a group for over a decade. Tomlin the coach? C- Tomline the man? A-

Tomlin became "Toby" to me, just like in The Office, he was always just annoying to everyone (though for a sit-com, he was part of some funny scenes). I wanted Tomlin gone and MANY a time I too shouted "NO...no, no, nooooooooooooooo" like Mike did although it was matched by "Please, just GO...go, go, go, gooooooooooooooo!"

    That's pretty cool.

We're doing pretty regular Taekwondo classes with my wife and kids. It's not super-competitive / Cobra Kai or anything. But it's probably good for my girls to have at least some understanding of self defense (though hopefully they never have to use it).

I did wrestling for a year in high school. Figured it would be good cardio for getting ready for rugby season (and it was). But I was always a big guy (though only got fat later), so as a freshmen I was wrestling other big guys that had been doing it for a long time. My first match at a meet was against the provincial champion (like a state champ, but in Canada). It was not very pretty.

I think I might have had a chance to be reasonably good if I stuck with it. But after getting just destroyed in that meet, I decided to do other things in our offseason. Me and a bunch of buddies from the rugby team put together a curling team...which was a ton of fun, but not really beneficial offseason practice.

If anyone ever gets a chance to try curling (1) it's really fun and you should try it, (2) on your first throw, use a lot less power than you think is necessary.

I think (like all HCs), he has a specialty. So you'll hear DBs like Ike sing his praises. But we also heard similar things from Ronde Barber in his HoF induction speech.

FWIW, I don't think the job of a HC is to be teaching players. I think most HCs spend very little time with players. And it sounds like Tomlin does this more than most. Which is one of the reasons players seemed to like him.

Re: TJ and his comments. This isn't the first time we've talked about moving him around more. I'll believe it happens when / if it happens. I tend to believe that what Debo said about TJ is true. That TJ can do things on one side that are unbelievable. But he can't do those same things from the other side. Maybe mobility or muscle memory or whatever.

Not moving TJ around certainly didn't hurt him at his peak. So it seems a lot more likely that the problem is him declining IMO.

That's not a team sport, and I did say sports not football.
I also competed in martial arts, in fact 3 different kinds, and boxing, and wrestling, but I was talking about team sports. Its not to belittle anyone, its to show they have no understanding of it.
Is it belittling someone to say they don't know what they are talking about in raising children if they never raised any. Try not to be so thin skinned.

I actually went to school in many states, and many great players have come out of Arkansas.

I actually played some beyond that, but thats neither here nor there. My whole thing if you go back , and realms is about playing a team sport, and if You never have thats not cutting you down, thats just saying you have no knowledge of it . Nothing more , nothing less. If You take that as a slight thats a you thing.
Yes I can tell from people's post that they have never played a team sport in their lives

No thats exactly what I meant, but some people get in their feelings, and as I've said hundreds of times too many people allow feelings over facts.

Just because a person didn't play high school or college football... doesn't make him a lesser or inferior fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Reminds me of the tendency in recent years of blue collar workers looking down on white collar workers who don't "work with their hands" and sit in air conditioned office "pushing buttons" on a computer. Try to do without those white collar workers for a few weeks in a business... and see how it goes. :smiley1:

    LoL.
Let's move the goal post a little to the right.
Im talking understanding of sports, not work.
If you have never played a team sport then you have no understanding of team sports by watching on TV.
Yes you can become a low level coach, and daily be around team sports for years, and come to a understanding of it, but that is not watching it in TV, that is actually living, and breathing it. That would be like me saying I understood being in war because I watch it on TV all the time. LoL.

Dude, I never said you, You are the one who jumped on this topic.
I said people, and you jumped right in feet first. Just because we disagree about Tomlin doesn't mean anything, and thats not what I was talking about .
I was talking about things said about winning, and losing, and aspect of team sports, and how hard it is to actually win 10 games a year in a 16-17 game schedule.
I've played on teams that were pretty dang good in many sports, and teams that were simply terrible, and its not easy to win either way.
This was going out to the guys who's whole understanding of team sports comes from video games.

Oh bs dude you know what you were doing. And your argument is trash, there are people who have played in the NFL that share the same viewpoints as the people you are putting down, hell some of them played for the Steelers.

No that is what Your feelings tell you. You have always let your feelings override what is actually being said on here. I've been on here long enough to know this.
I have e no reason to lie.
When have you known me to sugarcoat anything, so why would I be doing it now???

Deangelo Williams pulled this with Kyle Brandt and Peter Schrager. Schrager I dont think ever played any sport but Brandt played college ball and the dude obviously knows football and is qualified to speak on the NFL. Williams totally put them down and mocked Brandts college experience which I thought he was totally wrong for doing just as STD is wrong. It was a bad look for Williams.

But hell, Williams would die of laughter if STD tried to say his HS experience qualifies him for speaking on the NFL and the players.

After boxing for a few years I thought I would try Tae Kwon Do as a change of pace. My first sparring session my opponent stood squarely in front of me with his hands at his waist thrusting them out towards me. I dropped him with a left hook and the instructor came in yelling at me "No, no that's not what you're supposed to do". I walked out and went back to boxing.

You just did on this topic. You were very vague, if you arent sugar coating be more specific on what you meant and name names. You make these passive aggressive comments a lot.

    LoL.
That's how it is for some martial arts that don't actually fight, but its that way for a guy saying he's a boxer that has never even spared.
You, and I both know you have to actually do it to get better at it

    LoL.
Oh so know You want me to be mean to people personally, and get kicked off like last year??
I said what I meant, I just didn't add names, and a few of you jumped right in. Go back to what I originally said, and read it again without feelings.
Here this is exactly what I mean, and you can read into it whatever your conscience has you do.
If You have never played a team sport, then you don't know what its like, and will not know what it's like by watching on TV.
Its like saying you know what sex is like by watching porn

I took 3 years of Tae Kwon Do in the 80's as a kid. We had full contact sparring with pads. That sh!t was brutal at times. Of course it was divided up by weight class like boxing.

Back in the day I used to like sparring Tae Kwon Do guys before they learned to leg check. You could throw low leg roundhouse at their legs, and they would try to block with their arms. LoL
They would be so open to get a hook, or a straight every time, but I noticed that today many have learned to use a leg check like a Thai boxer. Only thing is many of them use leg pads, and don't really realize what it feels like without it.
