I didn't say that, but you can't let him get it elsewhere, and then 3 year down the line think, man I wish we got the deal done when we are still looking for a different CB

I know some don't like points, but someone tell me how many tds JPJ has given up since he's been here.

This is such an impressive thing IMO.

For context: Sauce Gardiner is an excellent CB. In his first 4 years he's given up 5 TDs. Over his first 3 years (where JPJ is now): Gardiner gave up 3 TDs. He was targeted 199 times in his first 3 years. Those targets led to 110 completions (55.3%) and 1325 yards. Passer rating when targeted (averaged by year, not by target) = 76.6. 1 sack. 40 PDs. 3 INTs. 6 TFLs. 26 accepted penalties for 268 yards. 15 accepted penalties for 172 yards.

Here are Porter's numbers: In 3 years: Porter has been targeted 215 times. He's given up 1 TD. He's also given up 116 completions (54.0%) for 1466 yards. Passer rating when targeted (averaged by year, not by target) = 71.2. 1 sack. 31 PDs. 3 INTs. 3 TFLs. 24 accepted regular season penalties for 254 yards.

And it's not like Porter is getting easy matchups either.

I'm not making the argument that Porter is better than Gardiner. But they appear to be pretty similar just looking at the numbers here. I think Gardiner is probably better.

Re: Penalties. Porter did better last year re: penalties (5 accepted / 42 yards). Last year isn't in the sample above for Gardiner. He had 4 accepted penalties for 51 yards. Pretty comparable last year anyway.

I think we're "lucky" that Porter doesn't have any individual honors. He's certainly good enough to be on a probowl team. Not having any PBs (or 1st / 2nd APs) should keep his value a little lower than it would be otherwise.

He's a very good CB IMO. And as Colbert used to say "Players only leave Pittsburgh when we let them leave". The team has control over Porter for at least the next 3 years. Which is why it really, really makes sense for him to take a 2nd contract with us so he at least gets the big SB up front.

Pay him now because it’s only going to get more expensive.

Would be gross roster mismanagement to let a CB like Porter get away when this team has struggled so much to find good talent there.

Who are your current top 3 CBs in the NFL?

What's defining elite in your view?

Porter has more INTS and pass breakups than most of that group.

Any staff that doesn't highly vskue Porter shouldn't be coaching jv high school ball let alone the NFL.

I’d rank Patrick Surtain as the #1 corner in the NFL right now. #2 goes to Derek Stingley Jr. #3 is more debatable. I say Jaycee Horn.

Joey Porter Jr. isn’t top-5 for me based on his production so far. I’d probably slot him somewhere between 8th and 15th among NFL corners. Overall, the talent at cornerback league-wide isn’t as strong as it used to be.

True, But who knows how much he is looking for at this point. I feel they should get a deal done and will probably be at camp at some time.

Worst case is he plays it out and they can tag him next season and work out a deal then.

    Restructures are a coming.

This seems to be in the cards. Watt isn't going anywhere as well as Herbig. Hopefully Highsmith has an injury free season.

I can't argue against what you are saying. I liken JPJ to Ike Taylor. You don't have to worry about his side of the field. Porter fit Tomlin's defensive scheme like a glove. Play press man on the boundary. Make the QB look elsewhere on first read. He is good at that.

It will be interesting to see if Graham upsets the apple cart and has Porter play more off or disguised coverages. Confusing the QB on presnap could help the defense and give JPJ more opportunities. If I'm an OC, I'm scheming my offense knowing exactly where and how Porter will be playing. The Steelers allowed 9th most conversions per pass attempt on third downs (SEA and HOU, #1 and #2 and Seahawks best CB is Witherspoon who is good but not elite). Steelers gotta figure something out on those critical downs cause it's not getting them off the field (and no, I'm not blaming JPJ for this. It's more scheme related.)

it may not be how much they value him as one player out of many they have to pay. they can pretty much have him locked up for 3 years right now, without much effort. they are trying to get the offense and defense closer to even in spending. some tough decisions will be made. they have dean, everette and ramsey locked up for 3 years as well. depends on his demands i would say.

I believe I said pay the man countless times before this post was even made.
Hell I wanted us to draft JPJ, and Gonzalez in the same draft, and they are both up trying to get new contracts, and I say pay both

I have no idea what the FO has in mind, nor do I have any idea what JPjr's plans are. The info I have been able to learn over time is teams tend to value elite defenders very highly and those players tend to get market value contracts. No, this is not 100%, but it's a very common occurrence in the NFL.

If the Steelers sign JPjr to a 5yr extension who's going to complain about that? I know those people exist, I just wonder what would be the reason you think this is a bad move.

If the market value for top10 NFL CBs is $24M-$31M per season average, who's going to complain if the 5yr extension falls within that range?

This is my opinion. JPjr deserves a fair, market value extension offer. I'm not trying to lowball offer either. 5yrs at an average of $26M-$29M per year.
Now we have a CB1 for the duration of MM's tenure.

Porter compares favorably to all those guys. He's also younger than all 3.

I'd agree porter is outside of top shelf guys. But he's closing fast.

Cheaper to sign him now and gamble he's got more room to grow his game than sign him after his first All Pro season.

Someone clearly can't handle the truth, the same someone who continues to stalk me with attempts to pick fights all over this board. Every accusation is a confession with fools like that.

Exactly. The Steelers would be fools not to lock him up now, but one poster argued for playing hardball with him. Sure, he backed off when challenged, but that's what he does.
