Perhaps the Steelers' thought process is that they figure Dunker already knows how to play on the right side by virtue of having played RT in college and are using OTAs to see if he can also play on the left in the event of McCormick getting injured. In case Dunker doesn't win a starting job his chances of getting a hat on game day are a lot higher if he can play and back up both guard positions.

That was my initial assumption as well. That said, for me, I threw said assumption away. College and the NFL are whole different levels of fundamentals, dsicipline and technique; doubly so in the trenches. Essentially, Rookies have to go from playing fast to now playing at light speed for the NFL allows very little room for error.

In his Defense, Iowa has one of the more robust training methods for Offensive Lineman; routinely shifting them around at practice even after earning their starting spots. Dunker stated as much after he was drafted. Perhaps that will help.

    Time will tell.

Cool story. You think Allar is starting from scratch?? Max was rawer than a beefsteak at a butcher...

Max Iheanachor’s NFL journey started with a search for size 17 cleats, PB&J quota - The Athletic

    A snip:

Behind the wheel sat Cory DeSanti, the coach of Elev8, an AAU basketball program in Southern California. From the moment he met Iheanachor, DeSanti was struck by the big man’s agility and athleticism. Rather than living in the low post, Iheanachor handled the ball and took jump shots from the perimeter. When opponents drove to the basket and bumped into Iheanachor, they’d often end up on the floor; Iheanachor would stand there unfazed.

“I’ve never seen anybody that size move like that,” DeSanti said. “I knew what I was seeing, but I just couldn’t believe it.”

DeSanti, part of the 1997 Washington State team that made the Rose Bowl, knew instantly that Iheanachor had a bright athletic future ahead of him — but only if he changed sports. As the coach navigated the rolling hills on the outskirts of Los Angeles, he steered the conversation toward football.

    ......

Iheanachor’s own doubts were underscored at home. Friends asked why he left basketball. His mom was on him, telling him that he was wasting his time, that he should be at a four-year school, studying to become a dentist or a doctor. That’s why they came to America in the first place.

One afternoon, he walked up to Godinez, ready to call it quits.

“Coach, I love you to death,” Godinez remembers Iheanachor saying. “You’ve done so much for me, but this just isn’t my sport.”

    Godinez refused to hear it.

“You tell your mom that she can thank me someday, because I’m not letting you leave this field right now,” Godinez remembers saying. “Go in the locker room, change and get out to practice. I’m not letting you quit. You need to trust me. You need to tell your mom, she has to trust me. You got to see this thing through and it’s going to work out.”
